Mawn is a noodle house with “no rules,” and the first restaurant for Chef Phila Lorn and his wife Rachel, who bring with them close to 20 years of experience in Philly’s restaurant scene. Phila, pronounced “Pee La,” broken English for Philadelphia, is a first-generation Cambodian-American chef. The first in his family to be born here, his parents and siblings came to Philadelphia as refugees in 1985 after surviving the war in Cambodia.Mawn, which means “chicken” in Khmer, the Cambodian language, represents more than one thing. To Phila, chicken was at every meal growing up, and to his parents, chicken represented peacetime. During the war and genocide of the Cambodian people, there was mostly only what was found in nature to eat, including rice and salt. If there was chicken, it meant no war. At the end of that dark time, recipes were lost, and culture was wiped out, but through survival, a new authenticity was born.

    Asked for a large table with some leg room and was given the absolute opposite. Food was as usual very solid and delicious. Servers seem stretched thin and the complex layout doesn’t help their efficiency. Starr doesn’t miss tho, it’s still fun and worth the short walk from my house.

    It was my husbands birthday and they were very accommodating since I Wanted to bring a birthday cake, so I really appreciated that. The food was amazing , fresh and flavorful . Each dish speaks for itself without trying too hard , it’s simple and unpretentious. We had a great time

    We had a perfect birthday celebration for a member of our party. Our server, Cozette, was knowledgeable, accomodating and really wonderful. She guided us towards delicious Vegan choices for one member in our party. The food and ambience was outstanding. Andrew was also a friendly and competent staff member who helped make the evening magical. Thank you Tyler for opening a wonderful restaurant.

    Our server was excellent. Provided good suggestions for our meal, friendly, attentive, and personable. Food was delicious. I had their salmon, loved the chopped salad, and sangria was very good. I'd recommend Maggiano's for lunch or dinner.
