Our “finest hour” was most definitely during the Battle of Britain in World War II, when we were commandeered by the RAF to serve as an auxiliary mess for Fighter Command at RAF Kenley. 'The Crabtree, with its spectacular position downstream from The River Cafe,has a huge sprawling garden, a glazed colonnade and frontage on to theThames shaded by a weeping willow. The prawns in chilli hot oil and the toastspread with tomatoes and onions were good, so much so we ordered themagain when we returned for Sunday lunch.
