This high-energy bistro took over as Williamsburg's best restaurant as soon as it opened in 2003. The sophisticated but relaxed dining room has an open kitchen, which uses fresh, local ingredients for its creative American fare. Reservations for the dining room and the bar are recommended and may be made up to 61 days in advance. Open daily for dinner, a reservationist is available during the day to take reservations by phone.

All reservations are for Fat Canary. Downstairs at Fat Canary is no reservations and is a same day, in-person check-in for our waitlist.

                                                    This was our first trip to Fat Canary. It won’t be our last. Although a small venue, the noise level was surprisingly low, so four good friends could have a quiet conversation. Next, Melissa was a superb server, present but never intrusive. Her descriptions of the meals were accurate, helpful, and almost as mouth-watering as the food itself. The support staff (water, food delivery to the table, etc.) were equally attentive without being intrusive. Finally, each of us tried a different offering…and each of us thoroughly enjoyed them. The combination of flavors, aromas, and textures—along with the meal presentations—were absolutely superb. The extensive wine list was also special. The place is expensive…but absolutely worth it. Perfect place to complement perfect friends.

                                                    It is always a treat to dine at the Fat Canary. Chef Tom and his extraordinary staff are the reason we dine there everytimr we are in Williamsburg. Extraordinary food and great wine selections.

                                                    The food is excellent although they forgot to put the nuts in the salad as advertised. Even though we were early and in the middle of the week it was still noisy.

                                                    The ambiance is lovely, and our server was extremely well-informed about how the food was acquired. He was also properly attentive. Of course, the food's the thing and it was outstanding: my husband had a special, the halibut, and raved about that entree. I opted for 2 appetizers--the Tuna Tempura (very good) and the Seared Foie Gras which was exceptional and something that I ordered because the animals are no longer force-fed in the US. My cocktail, a Cucumber Cosmo was refreshing and potent! We shared a Ginger Shortcake for dessert which was also delish and a comfortable portion for 2. Highly recommended. Make reservations early as the Fat Canary is quite popular.
