The waitstaff was friendly, slow, had little info on the menu . The veggie option was "succotash" literally a plate of white rice with a tablespoon of corn. Most unsatisfactory
I took my family to Family Meal for brunch after a performance of The Golden Goose at the Children's Theater. The food was excellent and the service was superior. I will definitely return.
Very disappointed. Menu looked great in theory, but execution was not good. Bloody Mary was bland (how can that be? It needed SALT! That seems impossible to imagine.) Chicken salad sandwich full of tiny bones! Fried green tomatoes hard and bland. Wedge salad too overloaded with egg. Mac and cheese was "ok". Won't be going back. Sorry!
Surprised you all didn't have regular iced tea. Sweet/unsweet. I suggest adding to menu
Good southern charm to the restaurant and food, service was excellent with our group of 7. Would recommend to friends.
We are big fans of Bryan Voltaggio but have yet to visit Family Meal for brunch so this was our first experience. Unfortunately, the chicken and waffles that we originally went there for, was off the menu that day so we were a bit disappointed. It happens, but we figured this was a menu staple since our friends who have been there multiple times were always able to get it before. Anyway, we were the ONLY table in the restaurant at the time and our service was a bit slow. A lot of the servers were hanging out at the host stand which I found to be a bit annoying. I am not picky by any means and my boyfriend is in the service industry, but when you're the only table in the restaurant I think you should get a little extra attention than if the restaurant was super full. Overall the food was great, very tasty and a good value. Our server was good, not great but attentive when she needed to be. Will return...hopefully for the chicken and waffles next time!
We were there for brunch. They did not have a separate gluten free menu, nor was their menu marked for gluten free. When we asked the waiter about gluten free, there seemed to only be a couple of possibilities. He also seemed a bit put-out at having to find out for us. It was disappointing. The food quality was good and the "aviator" cocktail was great. It is a cute concept with a garage doors to let in the outside on nice days. Overall, not terrible, but unless they get more "gluten friendly," we won't be back.
Our family visited this past Father's Day! The service was awesome and the food was delicious. We have already planned our next visit.
Good menu items not generally seen in most Richmond restaurants, but SLOW. How long does it take, anyway, to make a gin rickey and pour Scotch on the rocks?
My stroganoff was dry and my mousse whoopie pie was bone dry and the mousse felt like it was pulled right of the freezer. Had a big client with me, so I couldnt complain, so was disappointed.
Creativity with ingredients and preparation sets Family Meal's menu apart from more traditional fare. Innovation delights without ever straying into the weird or precious. A first visit to Family Meal will quickly become the first of many.
Lauren is the best. Great service and wonderful personality. Make the food experience outstanding.
I am not a fan of their lunch menu. I had the meatloaf. Too much sauce. I was hoping to order their fried chicken specialty but they only offer that at nights now. I love their fried chicken and disappointed they don't serve that at lunch. The lemonade is the amazing though.
Food was great but had some frustrations with the host and front of the house. When greeted for our reservation was told that there was difficulty sitting our party of 5. We would either have to sit outside or squeeze into a booth or wait 30 minutes. They explained that there were no tables available to seat us despite multiple empty booths (that could seat 4) and lots of extra chairs around. After making the suggestion to the host of pulling a chair up to a booth for our party,
we were ultimately seated.
While I have visited this restaurant before for dinner and brunch, my recent visit here for dinner was disappointing. I had seen on-line that they offered fried green tomatoes as an appetizer, so I planned to get that and a salad. Upon arrival, the item wasn't listed on the menu, and when I asked the waitress about it, she said it wasn't being offered that night. I understand, with chef owned restaurants, menu items can change. I decided to go for a breakfast item since they serve breakfast all day. they only had a few breakfast items listed, so I asked if they could fix French toast, since I had it there before and it was very good. The waitress stressed that they are only offering what was on the menu. I found this strange for a chef run establishment. So, I decided to keep it simple and ordered eggs, bacon and toast. the items were good, but when I asked for butter and jam/preserves/jelly for the toast, the waitress said they were "out". I asked her what they were going to do for their breakfast crowd tomorrow, but she didn't have an answer for that. I found this whole dining encounter strange....as if the cook in the back was following a food prep chart like they have at a fast food restaurant and can't deviate from that. My friend and I split a red velvet molten cake, which was delicious! So, in general this visit wasn't what I had come to expect from this restaurant, but I won't scratch it off my list just yet. willing to give it another try since I've had good dining experiences here in the past.
Our server knew nothing about the menu, and disappeared as soon as she brought the food. They have patio seating, but not enough umbrellas to provide shade for more than two or three small tables, and one of the umbrellas was broken. We sat inside on a beautiful evening, next to a screaming baby. Fish was over breaded and over cooked. Mediocre experience, again. I'm done with this place.
Didn't enjoy the food. :0( it's was tasty the drinks were great.
Thank you! It was our first visit, and the occasion was my birthday. The waiter was one of the best we've ever had. The food was delicious!! And it was a very family-friendly atmosphere -- a place where everyone would know your name. Cheers to you! And thank you for being in RVA.
Our first visit was for a family birthday get-together. Six adults, a 7 year old and 1-1/2 year old toddler. The waiter was attentive to ordering for the children first. My husband and son loved the meat loaf. Everyone was happy with their meal. There is a good selection of craft beers, but I with they carried Bud Lite. Over all, a great experience and it is a REPEAT, for us.
We dined at Family Meal on the recommendation of a friend. The fried chicken was very moist and tender, although the crust was very dark. We also ordered sides of mac-n-cheese (mediocre and dry), collard greens (excellent) and grit (well, just grits). Water glasses were only half filled and we needed frequent refills, a bit problematic. I had reserved a table, indicating we were celebrating two birthdays and requested a table by a window. When we arrived, I asked about our table request and we were guided to a room toward the back and offered a booth in a dark and sterile corner against a wall. There was a large window at the end of the room, just not close to our table. I asked about the booths I had seen in the front room by the windows and we were then given one of those. There was a lot of natural light in that room and a garage door that was opened into an outdoor patio, very nice. The restaurant was not crowded (that back room was nearly empty). Our waitress acknowledged the birthdays of two of the four in our group. Unfortunately, a family of five, including three children under 5 years of age, was seated right across from us. I was surprised they seated this family so close since there were many other seats available and we were 4 adults there for a special occasion. Being children, they became distracting. The food was good, but not great. There are many other restaurants in Richmond that are better.
As a Top Chef fan, I was so excited to go to Family Meal. Our server was good, but was not very knowledgeable about the beverages they served. The food was ok, but not much flavor. I understand the art of simplistic food, but it should have some flavor to it. The fried chicken sandwich was ok, but I was expecting fried chicken, not chicken salad. The pork belly was also very tough. It was nice to have visited, but if I lived in Richmond it probably wouldn't be somewhere that I would go to again.
Received very bad service from waitress. The wait staff was not familiar with the menus or the start and stop of brunch and dinner. Drink orders were not correct and didn't receive drinks until after having to request them several times which was after placing dinner order. More training is definitely needed. Attention to details, honestly and respect to the customer would be greatly appreciated. Washing of hands after wiping a spill off the floor would be needs to take place before assisting with food or drink. This was my experience aalong it the other Mother's with me on Mother's Day. Everyone's experience may be different.
Hopefully they have corrected these issues and you would have an enjoyable experience .
Awesome food and awesome experience. Every item was fantastic. Best onion rings I've ever had and the pot our fritters are worth coming back for. The service was better then most fine dining places I've been. Every thing in the menu is worth ordering. I highly recommend this to anyone in the area.
After looking at the menu online I was a little apprehensive about going to Family Meal. I was so glad that I went anyway. The food was so delicious and beautifully presented.
Although we did not have any cocktails, the prices listed were pretty high and may be a deterrent for going there if I planned to drink.
Our server was very knowledgeable and attentive without hovering!
My friend and I dined her as part of Restaurant week. My friend informed our waitress that she was vegetarian, and she selected a vegetarian starter/app and entree. Her salad had crumbles of bacon in it upon arrival. Upon making our waitress aware, she was very apologetic and said she would make her manager aware of the mistake. My friend kept the salad and removed the bacon crumbles even though our waitress offered to take it back. I think our waitress should have noticed the bacon before delivering our apps to us. Besides that mishap, we enjoyed our meals, and the desert was phenomenal.
The service is a little bit slow but the food is absolutely amazing and worth the wait. Awesome service everyone's very friendly beautiful environment clean restrooms. The food is consistently great.
The ambiance is very contemporary with almost a European feel, very relaxed and quiet when we were there for lunch. Our waitress was outstanding, very friendly and accomodating. She suggested the passion fruit tea which we loved. I ordered the special because the sandwich was a combination I had never tasted before and it turned out to be excellent. My husband ordered a burger and fries and said the burger had an excellent taste as well. We then had an ice cream soda which was also very good. The ice cream is made on premises and it would be nice if there was more than one flavor available. Very enjoyable lunch.
The food here is AMAZING!
I was traveling on business and found this place. Dont let shopping center construction scare you! Food is great. Some of the best fried chicken I've ever had. Save room for dessert too. I recommend the beach pie.
Did not meet expectations except for the noise level. Not interested in returning.
The server recommended the shrimp and grits, which is a fave of mine. She especially commented on how the grits were heirloom and tasted like popcorn. So I ordered them. They were fine. I ate them, but could barely taste the grits. And for $22, I was hoping for a little larger portion. So I ordered the Winter Salad again (I'd had it in Jan) and ate some there, and took the rest home. Delish! Also got the Pomegranate soda for the first time. That's a keeper! YUM! Will be visiting again (this was my 4th or 5th visit since it opened, and we tend not to repeat with all of our choices!)
Family Meals restaurant is Not vegetarian friendly. There are only 2 choices for vegetarians and one of which is a "kid's meal". Even the vegetarian food was prepared badly and was not edible. I will never set foot in this restaurant again.
This was my first time at the restaurant. I've been wanting to go for sometime and finally had time. I live 45 miles away. The service was great, but they could have been a tad more pleasant. A smile or two would be great. The guy who sat us gave us great suggestions. My daughter had a brunch meal and I a lunch. Both were so very delicious. We had planned for dessert. One the whoopee pie and the other the banana scotch pudding but there was no way we could eat both. So I got the latter. Wow! You must get this. The flavors just go great together. Two can definitely share. Can't wait to take my husband there.
I highly recommend this place. The bar looks pretty interesting as well. I am not a big drinker, but there were some interesting cocktails listed on the menu.
Upscale comfort food
Omlettes were cold; server was awesome. think the supervisor actually finally brought my mother's coffee and was very cold towards us and non-conversational. Will not return for the price we spent.
First visit was exceptional! This visit, not so much. I stepped outside of my "box" and tried the porkbelly PLT sandwich. The pork belly was extremely tough and there wasn't much of it on either side of the sandwich. The fried green tomatoes, very small, were sour, sour, sour. The collard greens with peanuts weren't too bad (I'd never had this green before). It was on the bitter side and I pulled quite a bit of it off. I couldn't even finish one half of the sandwich.
The appetizers were excellent and were half price (happy hour).
My daughter and I noticed that the couple next to us received their meal on the house because they had to send multiple items back (french fries! and their fried chicken).
I probably won't go back for a while.
Delicious and superior service.
My second visit for brunch and it was fantastic. Whenever you see Travis Milton at the stove, you know it will be great.
Comfort food. Nice ambiance. Great service. Won't disappoint but nothing spectacular about it
Fantastic grits from the chef's personal farm. Also, a delightful passion fruit iced tea. I will definitely return.
our server accidentally cursed while talking to us the food wasn't as good as I thought it would be as most of the dishes were overpriced for the portions. I definitely did not leave thinking I need to do this again
