Friendly service and delicious food at good prices. What's not to like?
We had a wonderful experience! Great food, great service and yummy drinks! We'll be back.
Food is really nothing special, especially for the price for Portland's restaurant landscape. Either improve food or reduce prices.
I've been to Portugal, and this place is as good as anything I've had there, from the seafood, to the linguica, to the salads, desserts and drinks. Why this place isn't contstantly mobbed is beyond me.
The food was excellent, the service wonderful and the atmosphere provided a nice relaxed neighborhood feel. Felt like we could have been eating in a neighborhood in Lisbon. The shrimp and meatballs were particularly good, but so were the salad and soup. Will certainly go back again, and really look forward to it.
The food was great and the owner was really friendly and helpful.
I really enjoyed the lamb meatballs. Great flavors!
The donuts are incredible. Don't let yourself leave without ordering them.
Visited New Year's Eve for first time. Was empty when we arrived at 7, but eventually filled up. Freezing cold inside - everyone kept their jackets on. Unique menu, with items not found elsewhere in Portland, one reason we came. May not be everyone's cup of tea, so peruse the online menu first. Portions were adequate, so didn't leave feeling overly stuffed. Had sardines and salt cod fritters for appetizers (would be nice if latter had a sauce). One of us had large shrimp appetizer for main and rest had codfish of the day, which was bowl of cod, potatoes, and olives. Oddly, only one dessert was available that night: felogs, which were tasty doughnuts covered with cinnamon sugar. Nice selection of ports and wine.
Everything was exceptionally good - could-not-be-fresher oysters, rich, scrumptious, unique butternut squash soup, oh-so-tender mouthwatering chicken.
We were curious about Portuguese food and wanted to try this place out. The appetizers were okay, although a little pricey for the serving size. The wine selection was small, but our settled choice was quite nice. They didn't have "yesterday's" soup, which was disappointing - it sounded really good. The entrees were very tasty, and special enough to standout. No real dessert option to speak of, so we passed. But, the big deal was that our waitress was great. Very friendly, helpful with the menu, and knew how to tell a story about the background of the dishes. For a Saturday night, it was not too crowded, which was too bad, because it is a nice place and worth a try.
We've been jonesing for decent Portugese food since visiting a few years ago, so was pleasantly surprised to finally find one here. Even more pleased that the food and service were so good. We had about 5-6 of the small plates and appetizers, and they were excellent and not too filling. The tempura green beans, garlic shrimp, salt cod fritters and potato soup were particularly good. They had a nice port list as well. Can't wait to go back and work through the mains.
Portland doesn't have a huge Portuguese community, but this little 'tasca' does Portuguese food well. Order a sausage to have it flambeed on your table. Enjoy some of the tasty Portuguese-style tapas. Go for the main courses and enjoy. Have a glass of vinho verde or a nice pilsner lager to accompany. Life is good!
I had passed this place a number of times and went in on a lark. My wife and I had a great meal. We will certainly be back. I learned a little about Portugal from our server and got to interact with the chef. I hope to return next month for the pig roast!
Overall the food was OK
Service was just a little slow
They seemed to be trying hard
My wife and I are going to Lisbon, and we wanted to get a head start on the foods we will be discovering. Fado truly met our expectations. We tried many of the small plates and everyone of them was delicious. We also tried several wines trying to find the ones we woul like when traveling. We especially liked the linguica, the lamb meatballs and the shrimp. Fado will become one of our favorite restaurants in Portland after our return from Portugal and Spain. They have a terrific happy hour menu .
The chef came over to our table for a chat. We loved meeting him and he made the dining experience for us. What a great guy. He said he does not read reviews but his mom does (so mom, tell him we thought he was wonderful as was the food). I would highly recommend getting the sausage for the table.
Very solid. Nothing exquisite, but an authentic Portuguese taste - i felt i was back in lisbon. Highly recommend.
Loved this place. Owner Ross is a gem, and his mama and grandma, both of whom he obviously adores, would be proud of how deliciously he presents Portugese foods from their recipes. As we prefer sharing a large spread of small offerings, we ordered from the appetizer/sharables portion of the menu: meatballs, tempura asparagus, a green salad, baby clams in white wine, and lightly braised kale & collards...all mouth-watering delicious in perfectly-sized portions. And then: Dessert! Oh, wow. Portugese donut balls, but NOT the American kind...almost crunchy outer skin rolled inn cinnamon-sugar, wrapped around an almost custardy center. We also ordered the Port-marinated pineapple: spiced Port reduced to a syrup, in which the pineapple soaked for a whole week...unbelievably decadent! This will be a regular go-to place for us.
The food is absolutely superb. Ross, the owner, is the such a great guy, and makes sure everyone is having a good time. There's always a huge line across the street at Por Que No, and I can't imagine why those folks wouldn't just cross the street to have some of the best food in town. We're sitting there now, our third time in as many weeks, enjoying a wonderful bottle of wine outside on his nice sidewalk picnic tables, vowing to make sure we get the word out about Ross and his wonderful food. I don't think we'll be able to get out of here without ordering some marinated pineapple...
A friend recommended we go here for dinner. It was surprisingly good. Food was impeccable, service was fantastic, the sangrias were delicious. I would recommend!
Wanted to try a new restaurant and decided on Fado and again we were very pleased. We had the Camarao which were very good. I had the short ribs and my wife had the scallops. We were very pleased. Service was very friendly and truly cared that we had a good experience. Well worth the visit.
Most authentic portuguese restaurante that I've found so far in the US. Amazing meal!
Cocktails were a little on the small side. One of us had a Manhattan and the martini glass was only half full. Thought it might have been a mistake, but the second one came out the same.
An excellent dining experience. Will come back often.
Clams with linguiça. Salad w/ friend garbanzo beans. Cream of asparagus soup. Piri Piri Chicken. Camarão ao Alho (OMG!) The list goes on...! The food at FADO is fantastic.
We live in the neighborhood. It was our first time eating there (last week). We had talked about going but never quite made it there. Well, I'm glad we finally did! (AND YOU SHOULD GO, AS WELL!)
The wines are amazing (Ross is the owner and he knows great Portuguese wines!). And what a nice man!
The service was absolutely wonderful...efficient, professional, knowledgeable, etc...
We can't wait to go back!
See you at FADO!
The four of us ordered three appetizers and four entrees - they were all good. Well prepared, served well … and reasonably priced.
We'll come back.
The owner was great. He waited on us and was very friendly. As expected, he knew the dishes well and told stories behind how a dish originated into the restaurant.
Food was amazing! This was my boyfriend and I's first visit. And my first time trying clams and oysters! It was the best choice to try those for the first time because I was left with a great taste!
Highly recommend Fado's!!!! We will 100% be back!
It was our first time at Fado. The food was excellent. The service was exellent but not intrusive like some places. The owner came out and checked on how things were going. We were made to feel welcome. And like I said, the food was great.
We went to Fado's for the first time on Valentine's Day. We were not planning on ordering the set four-course menu but the deal was such that it was hard to pass up. It turned out to be a wonderful decision. Everything was fantastic - from the Shrimp to the steak. The scallops in particular stood out, as I tasted flavors that were unrecognizable but delicious.
We really enjoyed our Valentines Day dinner at Fado. We ordered from the special menu for the occasion and were not disappointed. The wine list was not long but the wine we chose was excellent, a deep and fruity red from Portugal. The scallops and steak were both really yummy, and neither of us are usually fond of salads but we really liked the salad options that were made with kale and other mixed greens. The dessert was a combination cake/flan thing that was absolutely delicious and the portions were rightsized so that one could eat everything without feeling bloated. It was interesting food that was quite different from other restaurants and overall a very enjoyable experience. Service was prompt and helpful and the cooking smells from the open kitchen area in the middle filled the air and made the experience a lot of fun.
I recommend the baked pear salad and pan-seared cod. The server was very patient and did not rush us as it was our first time there. It was a good place to be with friends. I like that the accompanying veggies with the entree was healthy green vegetables like kale. The cod was cooked to perfection. We also loved the rosemary custard.
