Californian

The Elysian restaurant in Los Angeles invites diners to experience a unique celebration of food, community and art. The restaurant offers a communal feel where guests are treated like family and allowed to linger over dinner and cocktails. Owner and chef of Elysian, David Throne, creates semi-Mediterranean dishes that include fresh California ingredients. Visitors at Elysian can expect an ever-changing menu that includes snacks like chicken liver, koji radish and cuke and others. First course offerings like young broccoli and smoked mussels prepare the palette for the main dishes. For the second course, guests can sample options like ricotta gnocchi, clam and pork sausage or local halibut. Make sure to leave room for a pear tatin or specialty cookies for dessert.

What a relaxing, delicious, retreat 1000 miles from whatever world resides outside of that yard. We had delicious specialty crafted cocktails which helped meet our RDA in fruits and vegetables. We sampled most of the menu with our group of 5 and found them all delicious. Cheers to Elysian!

I just went to Elysian for dinner last week. The staff was wonderful - hostess and waitress. The design of the space is exactly what I love. The food was fine, but nothing spectacular. I love that they have a full bar and I look forward to going to back to have a few.

An utterly delightful spot; appealing and interesting decor, communal tables allowing for sharing the joy of the dishes arriving, the food is interesting and fresh of take as much as of ingredients. I've been there twice now and each time promise myself to come back just to sit in the sweet lazy lounge and indulge in toasting with one of their amazing cocktails. I am eagerly awaiting the summer months when I am pretty sure they will use some of their desert cool outside space to feed more of us.

Elysian is my favorite restaurant in Los Angeles. Tucked away in an industrial area near the LA River, you enter the restaurant by passing a wooden gate and wandering through a bamboo oasis. On sunny days or warm evenings, you can have a drink or eat in the garden/patio area. Inside, the restaurant feels more like a gallery--spacious, minimal, contemporary, with concrete floors, art on the walls, open kitchen. If you have been there more than once, Bethany, the hostess, will recognize you and greet you warmly. And while it still feels like they are working out some service kinks--I sometimes get the feeling that the servers have never waited tables before--the friendliness and food more than make up for the occasional oversights. Chef David Thorne's cooking--seasonal, local California-Mediterranean cuisine--is what keeps me coming back. Befitting the setting, each plate is like a work of art, but never fussy, just delicious. The portions aren't huge, but because they are so balanced and flavorful, they satisfy. Make sure you get on their mailing list. The weekly emails are creative and funny and will entice you with a photo of the week's new dish and what to expect on the menu. Although it's only open Thursday-Friday for dinner and Sunday brunch, I've made it part of my weekly routine. It feels like being invited to a meal with friends, friends who live in a beautiful loft and just happen to be great artists and cooks.

Love Bethany and the rest of the staff. Great food, delicious cocktails, but most importantly , a wonderfully chill atmosphere. A garden oasis in an industrial area, it is artfully designed without being painfully hip.

My husband and I got the egg sandwich. We wanted to sub avocado for the bacon but they only would do an added side of avocado for $2. I wish they had a few more savory vegetarian options. Overall very good! Blood orange juice worth the splurge.

Valentine's Day brunch was a big disappointment. We waited a long time to be seated and then they were out of a lot of items on the menu. Service was extremely slow but the food was okay. As a long time resident of the east side I was excited to check it out. Sadly, it fell short of the reviews and my expectations. Overall not a good experience.

The space, the decor, the staff, the menu in general including the intriguing drinks, the food itself, the wine, the service, the overall delight of the experience: Elysian is a wonderful place to dine. Open only a few occasions a week, it's a plan-ahead kind of treat. Tables are shared most often but it's very likely to be with people you'd like to know. I call it romantic in spite of shared tables because it's such a lovely experience to enjoy with loved ones. I'd say great for families because the garden is perfect for running off steam--and the staff is gracious to one and all. I will go to Elysian whenever I'm in LA and urge my friends to do so as well. A totally special experience.

I love Elysian, especially for brunch. It's a beautiful little oasis on the Eastside. I feel like I'm eating in the house I wish I had. The food on the rotating menu is so delicious, I frequently get dishes to go...in addition to the meal I just had. And the staff is just perfection starting with the friendly hostesses.

Tasty food but expensive--$140 for 3 people (1 salad, 2 pastas, 1 duck leg). Uncomfortable seating inside. An outdoors Sunday brunch could have potential but we won't be going back.

I am a big fan. Food was great, everything about the feel of the restaurant was on point. Although not terribly bothered because the restaurant is great in other ways. The wait staff is a little awkward, or atleast our waitress was. She was perfectly nice and didn't alter the evening but I wish that she had done some homework in regards to the wine list and menu. Also certain serving etiquette could be improved -- knowing when to take plates away and how to interrupt--she could just use a little grace. Like I said didn't impact the experience, just something for to improve for the future if management agreed. Otherwise a truly great experience. Drinks are fantastic.

I've been meaning to come to Elysian for the brunch pop-up for a while - I had been once before for a pop-up dinner that was also good. I'm really glad I got to try brunch! Reservations were easy to make, and we got in about an hour after we decided we wanted to go. The space is pretty and large - about half of it is outdoors (and beware, it does get kinda hot if you come right in the middle of the day). We got drinks while we waited for our table and they were really excellent. The pastries were the reason we came and of course they did not disappoint. the biscuit was perfectly fluffy and the donut was like a classier version of a donut with some crumb texture on it. YUM! I got the macro bowl and my husband got the waffle. Both were incredible. The waffle had the perfect texture and was served with this incredible cream and jam. My macro bowl tasted so fresh and left me feeling a little bit healthier (jk, don't forget about the donut!). I would definitely come back, so I hope the pop-up turns permanent!

The ambiance of this restaurant is incredible as soon as you walk through its wood gates. However, that seemed to be the only good thing about our dinner. We waited 15 minutes past our reservation, had to wait in a long line at the bar with a bar tender that seemed to be hashing out her personal issues right there, and then the food--meh. It was really disappointing. To top it off, the servers never seemed to know where the food went on the communal table. My food was always brought to the couple next to us, and it was just mind blowing for how expensive our meal was. Thanks, Elysian. I don't think I'll be joining you again.

Give parties of threes four tops when you are not booked, silly to smash them in to two large tables, decreasing the ambiance too; don't force the socialization when you have an empty restaurant-this happen sunday brunch last week

How about wait staff from the community-it would do wonders for community relationships, need more than just the hostess and kitchen help from the community..

Wasn't completely convinced that hosting a perfume/bar and light bites pairing night would work for me, but the complex blends of the much loved Sanae scents were translated effortlessly into an amazing array of bourbon, mezcal and gin cocktails. Who wouldn't want to indulge in a lavender infused tall boy gin with lemon, and the smoky mezcal, geranium preserves and rosewater was happiness in a glass. We enjoyed dinner at the large bench tables and were seated next to some young Swedish men, not mad at that. Enjoyed their dialect almost as much as the radicchio date salad, smoked trout and insanely amazing squid. I miss Europe and it's loud friendly art based banter and this eclectic, 'hipper than Jesus' crowd citing words most people have never heard of made we warm inside, Silverlake doesn't disappoint and Elysian's hide-away location makes you feel like you've hit upon a secret gem of smart, well dressed, food loving Angeleno's all housed in an indoor/outdoor tranquil local. Our waitress was earthy, informed and had rose colored cheeks and a smile that lit up the room, our hostess remembered our names from a single early evening introduction, most impressive, and the chef's were performing a well rehearsed ballet in the open kitchen. All the more admirable as they do not operate as a full time kitchen. We rounded off the evening with a purchase of Sanae's 'Smoking Rose' perfume, the perfect way to support this amazing brand. Congrats to all involved, it was worth fighting Friday night traffic for.

We had the most scrumptious brunch last Sunday @ ElysianLA which is a pop up restaurant featuring food by Roxana Jullapat formerly of Cooks County and Sonoko Sakai of Common Grains. The Buckwheat pancakes were light and airy, the Soba salad was delicious with kabocha squash and kale. The scones and biscuits were very light and tasty. The pop up restaurant will be at this location until the end of April.

Elysian is a hidden gem just steps from the LA River bike path. We were there for brunch and the biscuits and cornmeal muffin were not to be believed wonderful. Also tried the Soba Noodle salad and the polenta and greens. The garden and setting is magical. Truly a special spot.

Elysian is one of my favorite restaurants now for taking out-of-town guests. It is amazing food, amazing ambiance and really gives people that true "LA" food experience :) The reservation process is so easy and I love the personal touch by the staff in communications!

The chef changes with each dinner so it's hard to review the food. But the atmosphere and ambiance are lovely, the service impeccable and the feel-at-home vibe amazing.

Nestled between old warehouses, when you open the door to Elysian, it feels like you're walking into a secret garden. The ambiance is great whether you're seating inside or out, and every dish I've ever had there has been wonderful. Parties of 2 are usually seated at communal tables, so you get to meet your neighbors and other people who are in on the secret. Definitely a neighborhood gem.

Our service here was terrible. Hostess was nice, servers had no clue about the wine selection, told us it was small plates (it wasn't, so we over ordered to two people) and worst of all they brought us ALL of our order at the same time (even after we asked if it was coursed out for us and she said it would be). The worst. She brought us the pasta dish first before our cheese plate and salad and then EVERYTHING else showed up at the same times. We had to send two dishes back cause we didn't have enough space on the table to eat it and were made to feel like it was our fault. Then she never came back to check on us or offer to get us a second glass of wine to enjoy with our food. The price was insulting. $145.00 for two people. No thanks
