Since 1975, El Compadre Restaurant in Hollywood has been one of Southern California's hot spots for Mexican cuisine and drinks. The restaurant fashions the look and feel of an "old world hacienda". We loved having dinner here, despite some of the negative reviews which I will admit made us a little skeptical. We had a great server and the food choices are amazing. The margaritas are a lot of fun! When they bring them to you they light them so you get a nice visual effect. Overall I’d say our experience was good and was not impacted by some of the other reviews. I’d say it’s definitely a must do if you are looking for a nice food option in the area.

Inconsiderate, nasty hostess did not start off the evening well. Had a reservation for six and we were given the option of two miserable tables ..We had to sit outside in a very uncomfortable B room. Server act surprised that he had another table. Food was actually decent, but never come here on a Saturday night. Too frantic for the staff to handle.

It was Valentines Day and I booked on Open Table to get 2 tables for 2. My reservation was made and approved but when I got to the restaurant, what seemed like a manager was unsure about giving us 2 tables. The tables were one for my boyfriend and I. And the other for my daughter on her first date with her boyfriend. She’s younger so I went to supervise but wanted to give space. They reluctantly gave us 2 tables next to each other. The food was amazing! Drinks were superb! Although my boyfriend gave the waitress a difficult time with his order because he’s so picky, she was patient enough to bring him what he requested. She did seem to be a bit irritated but it’s understandable. I’ve worked in the restaurant industry for quite some time so I get how It can be difficult especially taking up 2 tables but I tipped well for the both of us. Never heard or been to this place before but I would definitely come back given a different situation.

Everything was great! Host was really accomadating. Wait staff was quick and friendly. Food was delicious. All that was missing was mariachi, but ya win some ya lose some! This is a great place just to try out, to bring visitors from out of town, to go on a date, literally anything. Hollywood classic! Love El Compadre!

I have wanted to visit El Compadre for a very long time and was happy to finally have the opportunity. However, I was disappointed. We had a party of 8 and from the very beginning, we could tell that the wait staff was trying to rush us. Before we could even get settled in our booth, a server was asking what we wanted to drink. We didn't even have the chance to look at the menus. Then a second server came by to ask if we wanted guacamole with our chips. A third server came immediately after him to ask if we were ready to order. All of this happened within 5 mins of being sat. They clearly wanted us to hurry. Once we ordered, the drinks and food came out fairly quickly but somehow my boyfriends plate was completely cold and mine was luke warm. Despite the food tasting good, it was overall, not a great experience.

Been going here for years, the flaming margaritas are a must & the ambience is AMZING especially W live entertainment like mariachi and sometimes bands here and there. This is a perfect place for date night or getting together with the girls over margaritas 🍻

The two hostesses seemed confused and unsure of how to seat people, especially the ones with reservations. On a bustling Friday night, that’s not okay. The food is mediocre, no great seasoned flavors. My shrimp & crab enchilada had zero spice & a tiny bit of crab, should have been called a shrimp enchilada instead. Best things I had was the margaritas & salsa, everything else tasted like American version of Mexican food.

I love this place, I’ve been coming here for 14 years, but I was not happy with the server this time. We still had full drinks and he kept circling our table asking if we were done, and put our check down. That is all fine, but then when we thought about ordering another drink , he came back to the table for the 5th or 6th time and asked if we were done and said other people were waiting. I looked around and noticed there were at least 3 empty tables nearby. It was awkward and I was annoyed that we constantly felt rushed so we left. Our reservation was at 6pm and this happened at 7:15pm. I would totally understand if we were there for 3 hours or something extreme, but this was a regular timeframe of drinks and dinner. Not sure I’ll go back…..

This is the second visit in a row where the waiter just doesn't want to be there and that makes us feel very unwelcome. They're abrupt, rude and diners are just an inconvenience. I understand that the pandemic has affected all of us, but the last two meals were ruined by the waiters. The older gentleman, who I was told had been there for many years, was so dismissive and would argue openly with the busser in front of us over silly things...such as the fact that the busser brought us a refill of chips and dip w/o telling him. It was crazy and uncomfortable. I even apologized to the busser for the older waiters behavior. The chips were definitely left over from lunch as they were cold and greasy. My husband ordered the combo of beef taco and cheese enchilada. The beef taco was cold and saturated in some liquid where the taco shell was completely soggy. The beef was at room temperature at best. It was mushy and flavorless. El Compadre has gone from being one of our favorite restaurants...one that we would look forward to and recommend to friends to us not wanting to return. Such a shame.
