Established in 1996, El Agave Restaurant & Tequileria offers its patrons a unique dining setting within
the largest tequila museum in the United States – with over 2,500 tequilas on display – also
repeatedly voted the #1 tequila bar in the country. Nestled in historic Old Town, San Diego, it is the
perfect place to enjoy a business lunch, romantic date, rehearsal dinner or to simply relax and
unwind sipping find tequila with friends.
Best tequila collection anywhere! If you love tequila you gotta go here. The mole is wonderful too. Limited selection during coronavirus times but still excellent.
Fantastic mole and great outdoor seating. Looking forward to returning to explore more of the menu and enjoy the margaritas!
The food was, as always, excellent. The service is even better than the food. There is plenty of outdoor seating and close attention to safety by the staff. This is one of my favorite places to eat in San Diego. It is a must go to. Don't miss it.
MY FAVORITE RESTAURANT BY FAR. THE SERVICE AND FOOD ARE EXCELLENT. IT IS THE BEST MEXICAN CUISINE IN THE COUNTY.
We got a reservation without any problems. Our reservation was at 4:30 we got there a little early but we got seated right away. When we got “the menu” it only had a QR, which is understandable since its safer. Once we open the menu on our phones, the option was lunch or dinner. They had way more options for lunch than for dinner. The prices were high for lunch, but doable. Dinner was too expensive, it pretty much doubled$$ There was an entree for lunch and dinner that cost $18 for lunch and $35 for dinner. When I asked the waiter if I could get the portion of the lunch instead of dinner assuming it was going to be way bigger. The waiter said it was the same amount of food but it was $35 instead of $18 only because it was dinner. It didn’t make sense to me. I ended up getting an appetizer of sopes. Three different small sopes. They were just ok. Not worth the price. We also ordered a margarita. I ordered the tamarindo and my husband the house one. They both were tasteless, but $13 each. Not going back. I would not recommend it.
If you like Tequila, this is the right place for you. I have never seen a restaurant with this many brands of Tequila. The food is decent and the service was fine. As far as attendance, the group of diners was fairly small. Hopefully, they will normally have more patrons.
I suggest you check the current menu, the items we loved were no longer on the menu. We totally understand with the current situation but none the less we would have enjoyed it more with our favorite dishes.
Service is always outstanding and there is no better Cadillac Margarita in San Diego than at El Agave.
Excellent food and service. Had a casual great time
El Agave is always wonderful...now they are seating booths and tables staggered to keep everyone safe. The food is fresh and delicious and the waitstaff is attentive and knowledgeable.
Great service and food, right price. I look forward to return and try moles.
The food is absolutely delicious. The service was personable and helpful. We will definitely go again.
Excellent food and service in these COVID-19 times.
Love this place! It’s my favorite Mexican restaurant in San Diego. Excellent service!
Authentic Mexican delicious food !
Service, host, owner, managers are the best.
Thank you El Agave team.
Very nice quiet type atmosphere with great food and drinks
We celebrated our anniversary here while COVID-19 continued to exist in San Diego. The staff was all very conscientious, wearing masks, and making us comfortable. The tequila and food were outstanding. They don't have vegan menu items but the chef made a delicious mole dish for me.
Great place, awesome staff.
El Agave is a special place, not your typical Mexican restaurant in Old Town! Delicious margaritas made with fresh ingredients like hibiscus, tamarind, and watermelon among others. The Jamaica margarita is my favorite! The food is also great and I love the ambience inside with all the different tequila bottles! It’s a slightly higher price point but worth the quality! Recommend for special occasions! Can’t wait to go back!
Drinks were excellent, as were the meat dishes, the taqueria appetizer in particular was much larger than anticipated, same with the churros. But the salad was a big letdown. Mole was very good and service was excellent but for a Mexican food it was a little on the pricey side, even for high end Mexican.
The food, drinks, and service were excellent. Our server Javier Was extremely knowledgeable, helpful, and courteous. This was our first visit to El Agave and it will be our go-to place for authentic Mexican dining.
Wonderful food- octopus, Caesar salad, mole sauce was as good as my grandmas (who was born in Mexico) and dessert- great service also. They seemed to really care.
Loved it! Peaceful, not too busy during this time. Excellent Sea Bass Tacos!
One of the best! If you like Mole' this place takes it to a new level. Fresh ingredients, delicious flavors, and amazing dishes. Great selection of tequila and the staff has really good knowledge of the different flavor profiles each of them brings. Staff is also extremely friendly and attentive. My wife and I drive to San Diego from LA just to spend a night and eat at El Agave. If you have never been here, go, GO NOW!!!
I love this restaurant. My husband and I have been dinning at El Agave for over 15 years. We have always had a wonderful experience, not just because every item in the menu that we have tried has been delicious, but also because the service is exceptional.
I have been twice and the food is always amazing. The margaritas are some of the best I’ve ever had and the service never disappoints. Highly recommend!!
Our waiter was pleasant, professional and very helpful with explaining items on the menu. The food was fantastic. I had the carnitas tacos and the pork was the best I have ever tasted. We tried the tres leches cake (homemade) and it was melt in your mouth delicious!
We went to Agave with high expectations but we were mildly disappointed with the quality of food. Beautiful presentation but the filet mignon was a poor cut of beef. I warned my husband not to expect great steak at a Mexican restaurant and I was correct. I got the chili relleno and frankly it was cold and filled mostly with nuts and raisins as opposed to meat. The place is cute and the service was good and the food tasted good but I was expecting a higher quality based on previous reviews.
Ordered Tacos Pescado but was too spicy to eat. I had to send it back. Thameywere gracias to replace the fish w-o the hot sauce that thefishhad been covered in. The rest of the meal was good. My partner had the Pork Mole. He said it was good. We will go again and again. Lunch is alsovery good.
Best margarita I ever had and the mole is fantastic.
My date and I had a "nice" meal at El Agave. Both our entrees were good, though not quite great. Similarly, our appetizers and cocktails were interesting and good but not great. (My date did not finish hers). The creativity and effort was obvious in the appetizers and entrees and drinks, but they didn't quite come together well enough. While we weren't exactly disappointed, I don't think either of us are in a hurry to go back either.
El agave has a smaller menu selection than other Mexican restaurants but food, drinks and service were excellent.
Non authentic Mexican food. Took the waiter 15 min to even acknowledge us.
Business dinner solo. Excellent food. Great service. My favorite place in San Diego for Mexican food.
Was our favourite eatery in Old town, fab margaritas by the lovely lady bartender!
Delicious Mexican food and drinks . Very good service.
Not what I expected. I wanted traditional. I was good, but didn’t make me want to come back for more.
Everything was fantastic with the exception of the parking. PARKING IS THE PITS....but everything else was wonderful.
Wow, this was noveau Mexican at its best, and great ambiance and service.
Very friendly staff and the food was outstanding! The octopus was cooked perfectly, soft and flavorful. The guacamole and the moles were also to die for.
great chipotle filet, croquetas, and of course tequilas
