Mikey is one of the coolest and most professional servers we’ve had in a while. This place is a Poipu staple and i’m relieved it survived the Covid era , maintaining it’s high standards in food quality and service.
Great service. Food was good but not great. Very interesting selections, the Hapa Burger was delicious and huge! (A+). The Ahi special was good but a bit dry (seared perfectly) the calamari was average. Spicy ramen was heavy on the peanut taste. The tempura onion rings that came with the burger were a huge hit. Should be a menu item!! Mikey was an amazing server! We want to go back just to see him and have the pleasure of his great attitude and impeccable service!
The best meal we had in Hawaii. Fabulous!
Embodies Hawaiian taste and aloha, everything was delicious and ambiance very island and relaxing.
First place with truly friendly staff. Great food, don’t miss the pineapple upside down cake with ice cream, made to order.
The Eating House seemed to be very busy. Despite this, we had at least four different servers share assisting our table with food and drinks. The calamari was excellent, the pork adobo and Ramen were good, and the pork belly was phenomenal.
Amazing!! We’re local and this is probably the best dinner we’ve had on island. Totally worth the price and wait time!
Delicious meal. Really enjoyed the butterfish hot pot
Everything was delicious and the service was superb!
Insanely amazing!!!! Loved it. Memorable for every reason: food, setting, view, ambiance, service. We were already looking for another reservation before we left our first!!!!
Wonderful dining experience last night at Eating House! We were celebrating our final night of our honeymoon, and this was the 2nd time eating at 1849 (trip in 2018 was our first). I had the burger which was amazing. Our server surprised us with an off the menu desert which was very tasty and a great treat to cap our meal. When staying in South Kauai this will definitely be a must the next time we visit the island.
I ordered the cauliflower and brussel sprouts dish which was talked up by our waiter but it was almost inedibly salty. I also ordered the ribs which were okay but we're not slow roasted long enough and so weren't fall off the bone tender. I've had better ribs at portillos - which is not what I would expect out of a restaurant of this caliber
There for 40th anniversary. Best meal / experience eating out in years. The butterfish hot pot was delicious and the deep fried red snapper was so much fun to eat. Thank you.
Pot stickers perfect. Hot pot with butterfish fabulous. Chocolate souffle decadent.
We had a fabulous dinner!
Mikey, our server was great!
Always our favorite spot on Kauai for the ribeye and fried rice! We hope the malsadas are brought back on the menu. We missed them! The dining was well spaced, the service was perfect and the food was excellent!
Great food! Server, Michael, was awesome!
My husband and I made a 6pm reservation and arrived a few minutes ahead of time. We were seated promptly and a server came to provide us complimentary edamame and water indicating our waiter would be with us shortly. After 45 mins and no one coming to take our order and/or even look our direction or notice we had not been helped, we decided to leave. Upon waking out the hostess wished us a good night.
Great food & good service
Other than hostess trying to seat us on a large table next to kitchen and servers passing by, it was a good experience. Just felt that making a reservation a couple weeks in advance and specifying it was my wife’s birthday should have resulted in a table of better selection.
Enjoyed our meal and Hawaiian martinis! The steak served pupu style with fried rice was great. Service otoh was not good, our waiter was very disinterested and would barley hang around our table to answer questions. Everyone else was friendly but he was borderline rude.
We miss the original Roy’s but very much like Eating House.
Food was amazing!
As always The Eating House has never disappointed us. We were glad they had a pretty good menu with some of our favorites. A lot of the restaurants have had to narrow their menus so it was a pleasant surprise.
Restaurant ended up not being open despite allowing me to make a reservation and confirming via text the day of.
We ordered a pupu dish of shrimp which unspectacular and mildly overcooked. More disappointing was that the two signature entrees, Cajun Ahi and Korean Rice Bowl with Butter Fish, that we ordered were unspired and dull.
The drinks were pretty weak as well although we enjoyed the Mai Tai. It was my finances birthday and they did give her a good dessert. The edamame free starter was slightly spicy and fun.
I wouldn't recommend the restaurant.
The service was very good as always. We enjoyed the calamari and fried chicken. The menu was underwhelming, we wish there were more items but what was on it was very good. The chocolate lava cake is my daughters favorite dish, we all like it. Overall, we were glad to be back and really enjoyed our dinner. We understand that a member of the kitchen staff tested positive for CoVid and we hope the person recovers soon and everyone stays healthy.
Was a great experience. My server was personable and knowledgeable regarding the menu. Some of my favorites from Roy’s were updated, beautifully! Will definitely return to this restaurant.
Initially our waitress was very good. The food was delicious. Unfortunately a party of 4 ordering ramen and appetizers with no cocktails (only a bottle of wine) should not take 2.5 hours. There were large gaps of time between appetizers and the main course. At one point they delivered the ramen to two of us while the other ramen sat on the kitchen counter for over 20 minutes. This was not for lack of serve staff as we observed local parties that had 2 people serving them . We may give them another try as the food was delicious but with caution.
Nice place for family with a decent view.
Even better than the old Roy’s! Exceptional food, service and value. Best in the area. We will be back soon!
Ate there post COVID. Menu seemed limited. Had a Cesar salad and pasta with shrimp. Food just okay - I was expecting more based on previous experiences.
This was our first visit to this restaurant and we LOVED it!! Open floor plan with minimal tables and plenty of serving staff. EXCELLENT food and the chef even prepared my steak exactly the way I requested. Hubby said his meal was very good as well! Will be going back on our next trip to Kauai.
Great food and greater staff Strong work from the kitchen
Our staycation away from home for the weekend. We’re local Kamaaina seeking a retreat as traveling abroad is too complicated right now amidst the pandemic. Roy Yamaguchi cuisine and his reputation precedes himself. Food was tasty and consistent. My qualm is with the server. Our server started off cordial, then failed miserably toward the end. Almost bi-polar. We dined there in January too of this year and the same thing with a different server. They start off nice then drop off the deep toward the end. We dined at Merriman’s the night before. The food and server was superb. I’m in the hospitality industry and appreciate the value and worth of good consistent customer service. This restaurant is over gentrified. We will NOT return. Hate myself for leaving a decent tip.
I’ve eaten here many times and if it were my first time perhaps I might have rated it higher. Although enjoying this dining experience at Eating House 1849, it was competing with the memories of my past visits. The Brussels sprouts were not as tasty as before; fewer pine nuts and raisins. Glaze lacked the taste I remembered. This appetizer was a a dish that I had always looked forward to. Another favorite, baby back ribs were cooked to tender perfection but just a bit too salty. The kamameshi with miso butterfish, while good, also seemed less well prepared than in the past.
Book a reservation and ask to be seated in the back. It will give you a wonderful view and if you are there at sunset perhaps a spectacular visual.
Will I go back? In a word- Yes. I am hoping that this was an off night and/or they were still working on processes while recovering from the pandemic. Eating House 1848 is one of a few restaurants that survived the COVID-19 restrictions in Kukuiula Shopping Center. And, consistently has been one of my favorites on the island.
The speed of service was great. Drink and food all came out pretty quickly. Butter fish were great, ribs were pretty good. Had prime ribs stake also, I think it’s better to stick with seafood.
The food and service are the typical high level we expect for a RY restaurant. Happy diners.
We were on the island for 3 weeks and came here our last night. This was hands down the BEST food we had here. Other places were very good. This was outstanding. Steak was incredible. Service was excellent. Wish we had gone here earlier to have that streak more than once!
Love eating house! We go there all the time! The service and food is always amazing and delicious. We love you, Eating House!
The meal was good, but only because of the good friends we shared it with. The only great food we had was the sizzling beef appetizer we ordered. The calamari was so so. The 2 steaks that were ordered were both over cooked and terribly overpriced. It was just an ok meal. For the $400+ for 4 people, I think it should have been more than ok. I remember the old Roy’s in Poipu shopping center and I miss it. It was so much better.
