Eat. An American Bistro
The intimate location (great for a date), tucked away at the north end of the Virginia Beach oceanfront, has become a local favorite. The eclectic menu has something for everyone, including creative renditions of steaks, fresh fish and seafood, possibly the best burger you'll ever have, vegetarian and more. Plus, there's a chalkboard of daily specials, and a full list of wines, craft beers and cocktails.
Open 7 days a week, it's a MUST-TRY in the resort area.
Excellent dinner and service
Everything was excellent from the bar, to the service, to the food. I highly recommend the Dirty Poutine for an appetizer, or a side if you're hungry.
Excellent service, cuisine and menu.
Food is thoughtfully and well prepared and always delicious. Knowledgable servers and cozy atmosphere. This has become one of our must visit locations when we visit.
Eat. An American Bistro is a restaurant that can be counted on to deliver consistently on atmosphere, service, and a creative menu that translates into GOOD FOOD!
It provides a cozy, friendly atmosphere for singles or couples in the bar area. The larger dining area is lively, with a city feel. On warm evenings, the outdoor patio is the place to be....especially if one likes warm ocean breezes and the sound of ocean waves pounding the shore.
The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable, and the chefs prepare dishes one will compliment and remember!
Amazing as always!!!!!! A perfect Anniversary dinner.
The service was great. The food was great (octopus, steak, pork chop). The parking is more than annoying. There is none. We called after driving around for 10 minutes and were told to go to the valet at Holiday Inn a block away. Why not have a valet at Eat? I can’t imagine what the parking is like during tourist season. But the food was good enough to go back, but not often because of the lack of parking.
Food was excellent. Wine was excellent.
This is my
Go to place to get amazing fillet and great food in general! The sticky ginger cake is amazing as well!
We had a wonderful dinner, and the service was excellent as always.
All 5 of us thoroughly enjoyed the evening at Eat, and highly recommend
Ordered Scallops & roasted corn grits. Scallops were excellent but chomped on at least 2 popcorn kernels and thought i broke a tooth for a minute. Not happy about that..........what's up with the kernels. You really need to check and remove. It's like having a bone in fish........Yuck.
My wife and I had an amazing dinner, she had scallops off the menu and I had a nightly special of beef short ribs. They have a great wine and cocktail menu, and we shared a most delicious dessert. Great night, we left there knowing we’ll be coming back there again in the future.
I would highly recommend this restaurant. The food was outstanding, the ambience very nice and the wait staff very attentive. I had the special that was short ribs with homemade paperdelle which was very good!! Small restaurant but a true find!
Great food/great service (this time Victoria but their entire staff is great)
This is a great restaurant with superb food and excellent service. Parking can be difficult so recommend using the valet at the Holiday Inn 2 blocks away.
The food here was fantastic. It was the best meal I’ve had in a long time. The place seemed to make everything from scratch from the cocktail ingredients to the truffle flavored honey they served with our cheese plate. Everything was super fresh with perfect flavor combinations. We had a couple of nice cocktails, the cheese plate, the scallops, tuna and a dessert. The cheese selection was great and was served with some amazing garnishes and homemade crackers. The scallops were cooked perfectly with an amazing glaze. I did not try my husband’s tuna, but he ate the whole thing and seemed to love it. We both loved the dessert - a sticky ginger cake, which was like a warm gingery sticky bun that I will dream about tonight. Delicious!
Too expensive with poor taste.
The waitress, Victoria, I believe was extremely knowledgeable and quite good as a server. She disappeared for a short while midway through our meal, but was otherwise quite attentive. The food selection was so awesome that it was hard to decide what to get, and when we finally decided, it was prepared to perfection! I had scallops and my business associate had the filet, and they were great, as were the Octopus and the lobster cheesecake appetizers. Wonderful meal!
Great food great service!
Creative food, eclectic menu (which we like). Probably the highest quality cuisine I've had at Virginia Beach.
The server had an attitude from the moment we were seated and throughout the meal. The food presentation and preparation was mediocre.
My family enjoyed our dinner, the atmosphere was amazing, and the food was delicious. We certainly plan on going back in the near future.
We've been repeat customers for several years, and unfortunately I don't think we'll return. Food was mediocre this time, but what really stood out was the terrible service. I don't remember his name, but the male server with the pony tail was very inattentive and unenthusiastic. I would've been disappointed with his service under normal circumstances, but we were sandwiched between two other tables with a different server, and it was apparent that she was on top of her game. Both of the other tables were provided bread, we had to ask after watching the others enjoy theirs. Even the descriptions of the specials were different. Poor experience all around.
Laura was very pleasant, attentive, and knowledgeable of the menu. Laura never let a glass go dry, checked on our experience frequently (but not too often), and made our first visit to Eat fabulous. Anyone in or around the Virginia Beach area that hasn’t been here needs to adjust their to do list—Eat offers refreshingly inventive and unique menu items that treat high quality ingredients with the deserved care and respect. Can’t wait to return!
Could not ask for a better experience than dining at Eat, An American Bistro. Can’t wait to go back again.
We have been to Eat a number of times and have never been disappointed. From the food to the service to the goodbyes, it truly is one of the ocean fronts hidden gems. Make sure you know where you’re going to park before hand. We will be back and can’t wait until we are. Shoutout to Victoria! She was entertaining and wonderful! Her dog is one lucky boy!
An eclectic fusion cuisine. Has subtle flavors well matched. Had the Fire&Ice and Octopus. One guest had the Hamburger which is enormous but juicy and delicious. The Big special was a cioppino w shrimp, mussels and halibut. It’s not s dish that will nick your socks off but take them off slowly, sublet and refined with fennel and saffron. The fish was well cooked, soft and flaky. Though not a Michelin level place it is a great place and decently priced.
We were on a family vacation at the beach and found this restaurant on a google search. The appetizers were delicious, but the meals just ok. We brought our children and although they were very accommodating, I would not classify this place as kid friendly. Cute little spot, if it were just the hubs and I, we’d go back for apps and drinks.
We always come to Eat during our trips to VB. This time we were celebrating our anniversary and unfortunately it was not a good experience. The hostess was very unfriendly and in huge rush, which did not make us feel welcomed. Our server was fairly friendly , but he seemed very stress and we felt very rushed in between our starters and main meal . A very intoxicated patron was seated behind us and she caused a very big scene as we were paying our bill. It was very embarrassing and it really ruined our night. The manager came over to our table to apologize , after we shared our feedback, she did not offer to make things right. The food is always very good. I’m not sure we will go back after this experience .
We love Eat. The menu offerings are varied and innovative. The presentation is always special and we have never had a meal that wasn't delicious. The wine special that was offered was delicious and reasonable. We always feel we get our moneys worth at EAT.
Excellent food! Apps, entres, desert- you can’t miss! Wait staff is friendly and there’s a great atmosphere. We’ll definitely be back next time we are in town.
Good food and service. Not good for kids but they are very accommodating. Best burger we ever had!
EAT is always delicious. Fun restaurant to go to with great staff. Never disappoints.
My only real complaint was parking- while there were some meters and street spots none of the meters were operational. Construction seemed to have the website suggestion for parking blocked out. Ultimately having dropped part of our party off the restaurant and cocking the staff suggest valet at the next door HI. That worked but consumed 20 minutes.
That was the only negative, but I guess coming from another city where restaurants will have a valet to park cars in their ample out Yurong parking lot, ugh
The drinks were great,
Amazing cioppino , solid steak frites, lovely aps served up by an affable waiter. All the earlier annoyance melted.
Well worth a visit.
I have been to Eat. several times over the years. I'm originally from Virginia Beach and visit often and have been to the restaurant several times. I have generally had good experiences. I live in NYC full time and eat out there a lot, so I have fairly high standards and Eat. is great. Unfortunately this time my husband and I went just the two of us and did not have as good of an experience- this is generally because the waiter rushed us significantly. The entire meal- drinks, appetizers, and dinner was over and bill was paid in 1 hour. We tried to slow them down a bit by telling the waiter "we're not quite ready to order our entrees yet" and "we haven't even looked a the drink menu yet," but he rudely stood there and said, "I will help you decide between the meals" and "go ahead and look at the drink menu now." After he returned the check at the end he said "no one's waiting for this table so if you want another drink now that's fine." because he insisted we order our entire meal within 7 minutes of arriving, I took a little longer to eat my appetizer and my entree came out 2 minutes after I finished it, and it was cold. They were obviously holding it while I took 5 extra minutes to eat my entree. It was a Friday night and a lot of the tables were empty. It seemed like someone had told them to expect a dinner rush that never came or to turn the tables over. That definitely didn't go over well with me... if you spend the money on 4 drinks, 2 appetizers and 2 entrees, you deserve to sit at the table for more than an hour.
I have much loyalty to local virginia beach restaurants and this situation made me sad.
These comments are for two visits Monday (open table res) and two nights later for retry. Monday, Eat was crazy busy and my Hasselhoff burger was very bad. I had never tried it before and because it’s a signature dish wanted to try it. Attentive waitress and mgmt removed it from check. Because Eat is our favorite restaurant in Va Beach and anyone can mess up one time, we returned two nights later for another try. This Hasselhoff was great, up to to the usual excellent standard. The chicken/shiitake potstickers and charcuterie plate were excellent as well.
The first Hasselhoff was the only bad dish I have ever been served at Eat. I highly recommend it to everyone.
My 15 year old daughter’s bday. Fun dinner.
This was our first visit to the restaurant. We were celebrating our wedding anniversary. We thoroughly enjoyed our meal, appetizers to desert. We will definitely return. The only negative was the parking. There is virtually no parking at this restaurant. We had to valet the car at the Holiday Inn and walk from there.
