excellent food and ambiance. enjoyed our evening here.
From start to finish this restaurant delivered top notch service. We celebrated our 20 year anniversary there and they made every moment seem like they were there just for us. We had THE best steak we've ever had and that was just a small portion of the night. I would recommend going there to anyone and everyone! A+++ all around!!!!
Loved the decor and historical elements added to The Driskell Grill . The tables were spaced adequately to have a private conversation and the star themed carpet keep the noise level down for those of us with hearing issues. Delicious appetizers, salads and steaks!
Host,Kevin and waiter, Roy were both outstanding. Both very attentive. Our interactions with them both were very pleasant. Food was delicious.
Host was amazing he was very knowledgeable and sociable starting us right from the beginning. Our waitress was attentive and has perfect timing showing up just when we would need it. What a great night with great food! Super recommend!
Absolutely amazing dining experience! Our meal was superb and the only thing better was the service -- both the host and server were incredibly gracious and friendly, with great recommendations on what to order and even what to do with the rest of our time in Austin. We were there for over two hours because it was such an immersive and pleasant experience -- we just got wrapped up in it all! I cannot recommend Driskill Grill enough! Thank you for making this birthday such a memorable one (and thank you for the delicious birthday cake -- and for chasing me down when I left it behind!)
Kevin the host was amazing
It was my girlfriend’s birthday as well as the night I asked her to marry me. He went out of his way to ensure that everything was perfect
We went for my hubby’s birthday and we’re blown away by how beautiful the hotel and restaurant were. It’s amazing being somewhere with so much history. I ordered the house ribeye aged for a month with a lobster tail and they were phenomenal especially with the in house sauces. My husband had the surf and turf with a filet Oscar style and a lobster and his was equally as delicious. In my opinion you pay for what you get and we were absolutely happy with everything including the service our waitress was the best. We would 100% recommend and will be talking about this for a long time!
The Driscoll is Old School western ambiance. Beautiful dining room and our server was excellent! We had the surf and turf and bone-in ribeye. Both were great. A great dining experience in a historic setting. Loved it!
Beautiful setting, great food, great service - and the prices were outrageous. Can there not be some improvement there?
I keep coming back here for special occasions. It is one of the few places left that will allow wine from outside. Corking fee is $25. Our waiter was very knowledgeable and the food is always good.
Another wonderful pre-concert dinner at this relaxing, classy and always outstanding Austin icon, the Driskill.
Food is expertly prepared and the service is excellent. Great menu choices and excellent wine list. Knowledgeable and friendly staff.
$300 for 2 people was ridiculous. They are living in the past. I eat in Europe and Australia all the time and for some reason the US always gets these chefs that think they are brilliant i.e. no salt or pepper on the tables on purpose. The soup was way under seasoned. In reality about a $100 meal.
Exellent atmosphere. Good food, good service. Very friendly.
Food was great. I go there for the wagyu Burger!
Kevin the maitre d was amazing!! Made our night!
Austin classic that remains fresh and consistently excellent
We went to the Driskill Grill for their pre-fixed New Years Eve dinner. The dinner included four courses and a ticket into the bar after dinner. The service at the Grill was wonderful and we never felt rushed. The food was very good and portion sizes were fair. I do think overall a little over priced at $130 a person (not including drinks, tax and gratuity). The bar was very noisy and crowded with nowhere to sit, so we didn’t use our included “ticket” and sat in the lobby instead. I also felt there should be more decorations. The dinner was fun to experience once and we will remember ringing in the decade there, but I don’t really need to go back anytime soon.
We had Christmas Night dinner reservations for 2 months. There was no mention on the Open Table site that there was only a $130 multi-course menu option. The restaurant website mentioned the Christmas menu but did not say it was the only menu. Their website said that menu was from 3pm to 7pm. We had 7pm reservations and thought since the Christmas menu was over at 7pm, we would be able to order from their standard menu. Very upset by their (& Open Table's) lack of clear communication. We left there upset and had to find somewhere else to eat.
We were so excited to bring my Mother-in-law here for Christmas Dinner but it was definitively not worth the $130/per head charged. The food portions were extremely small and looked/tasted like it had been sitting out under a warming lamp. The salmon was decent but my MIL’s beef filet was marblized and chewy. Service was the only thing half way decent but even then the course timings were very inconsistent and the servers seemed in a hurry to dump ours and get back to kitchen. Multiple servers apologized throughout the night saying it was super busy and the whole night felt rushed. After paying our $600 bill we left completely disappointed and underwhelmed.
I don’t write reviews, ever, but felt compelled to do so here in the hopes that nobody else makes the same mistake we did. I also recognize that all that follows falls squarely under the category of first-world problems.
We so wanted to have a great experience for Christmas dinner, but it went poorly from top to bottom. We arrived on time but were told the table wasn’t ready (in a near-empty restaurant). Fine - stuff happens, not an issue on its own. While we waited, the host openly complained about having to work Christmas. We were seated about 20 minutes later and our waitress greeted us warmly. Great, we thought. She then disappeared and was mostly absent for the remainder of the service. Another server, Darren, was the lone highlight of the evening. He was charming and tried so hard, but at the end of the day we were not his table.
All of that would have been overlooked had the food been good, or even decent. We had parsnip apple soup (“herby applesauce”); an untamed, unremarkable salad; and, for entrees, the salmon (my wife) and the steak filet (me). The salmon was fishy and so, so boring. I ordered the steak medium rare and got it medium well. In the restaurant’s defense, I didn’t complain or send it back (and they likely would have brought a newer, less overdone steak), but I shouldn’t have to. It was a prix fixe menu, and they went 0 for 2 of the 2 entree offerings. The dessert was served buffet style and the options were buffet quality. Yuck.
This was a special occasion for which we paid $500+, and it just sucked at every turn, apart from Darren. The issues suggest a systemic mismanagement and it was such a bummer to close the holidays out that way.
I would definitely not recommend. I took my family there for Christmas and the valet and maitre d were awesome. It was terribly crowded in the bar and heavy metal music or some such was playing. The restaurant was not decorated for christmas in any way. The food was overpriced and decidedly mediocre. A huge disappointment. Even the lovely dessert table tasted as if the desserts had sat out for a couple weeks. The coffee was lukewarm at best. Our waiter forgot that we had asked to take dinner leftovers home. The waiter did not seem to recognize what fennel was even when complimented on the root vegetables. Friendly overtures to the waitperson were rebuffed with harried rudeness despite the emptiness of the room at 5:00pm. We were upcharged a 20 percent wait person tip called large party because it was christmas, but I have eaten christmas dinners at the Driskill for years and this was not even close to a feast. I will never go there again.
Service was excellent, but food was poor.
Deviled eggs were so sour with pickle juice you almost couldn’t eat them. The Parsnip-Apple soup was really off and tasted so bland lacking any taste. The Fillet Steaks were not cooked to our liking and were tough, obviously cooked along time previously and then warmed up. Then all the side dishes were cold except the mashed potatoes. Dessert looked pretty but lacked in any taste. Their bread pudding was pretty to look at but tasted like moldy yeasty bread lacking any good taste. For the $650 spent it was very disappointed except for the company of the family together this Christmas 2019.
I came here for Christmas Eve dinner with my significant other. I understand paying a premium for a holiday meal, but in this case it wasn’t worth it. The salmon and steak were dry, and had clearly been prepared and left warming for a while before they reached our table. The service was slow due to understaffing. We could have had a better dinner at half the price (came out to over $350 with our two cocktails) at a nice restaurant down the street.
The Driskill Grill was disappointing, the food was ok for a grill; but nothing special.
The first wine we orde was out of stock, however the Grinch Cabernet we were served was very nice.
The meal timing was poor as we waited a long time between salads and entrees. The waitress had too many tables to cover and as a result was inattentive.
There are better places to have a steak, chop or dining experience in Austin.
The short ribs were a major disappointment and we were comped for the meal- a nice touch.
We always enjoy the Driskill Grill and the unique variety of menu items. All are first class. Staff is friendly, attentive and professional. If you're looking for some old-world charm, here it is. Nice wine list too!
We arrived a little before our reservation. They seated us immediately. The host was very outgoing and made you feel welcome. After being seated it was a matter of seconds and our waiter introduced himself. The service was top notch and so was the food.
I was on my own. Well advised by staff re food choices. Meal was fantastic
After navigating the beautiful, but very noisy bar, the restaurant was a welcome quiet oasis. The service was prompt, informative, friendly and not intrusive. The ambiance was perfect for dinner conversation without straining to hear. The food was as you would expect of a restaurant in this price range. Everything was very good, but there were no happy surprises that would warrant the fifth star.
Service and food are excellent!
Our anniversary dinner was a very disappointing evening. We spent $200 for poor quality steaks, a waiter who had no time for us, and the rest of the food just “ok.”
Great restAurant plus go early and have drinks in the bar.
Service was terrific.
We have been dining at the Driskill for the past 20 years. In the past three years the level of service and the taste of the offerings has steadily decreased. This last outing was for a birthday event that was not acknowledged even though it was listed on the reservation. Before dining we had drinks and queso, the queso was lukewarm and the drinks were third rate. My dinner was good, however the appetizers were all poorly prepared and served. The hostess spent more time at the front desk talking with the door greeter then waiting on the limited customers in the restaurant. For the price of almost $300.00 for two people I have come to expect a higher level of service.
The steak was way over cooked the service was ok just not very welcoming
Drinks and raw oysters were horrible. Service was extremely slow. Steak was ok, but hardly exceptional considering the price. Overall a disappointing night.
It was a very intimate dining experience. The old wood decore had that hitorical charm that we like. The wines were very good and pared well with the food. Our server was very nice but for the price, I would expect a little more upscale service.
Overall, I would rate the evening as good. I would certainly recommend this place based on the food. It was our anniversary and the glasses of champagne was a nice gesture.
Our waiter was good but the host, Kevin, was absolutely a gem. He was attentive, friendly and really made our experience delightful.
The food was fantastic!!!
Wonderful and friendly staff. The food was excellent and loved the atmosphere with the touch of history.
We were a party of 4 persons. The restaurant added a surcharge of 20% because the Formula One race was at the Circuit of the Americas that weekend. We were not advised of this surcharge when booking the reservation or when we were seated or when we ordered. The first notice that we had was when we received our bill. We were in Austin for 5 days and ate at many other high end restaurants and no other restaurants added an F1 surcharge.
In addition, our food was not hot. It took forever for us to get our food - the server said our order was misplaced and got out of its place in the line! They were out of the wine that we ordered and of course the suggestion was for a wine that was twice the price. We chose another wine that was a 2016, when it arrived it was a 2017 ("oh, out of the 2016 too" but is still the same price as the 2016). When the server poured that last third of the wine, she emptied it into two of the parties glasses and left the other empty and then said "do you want another bottle of wine?".
Upselling, overpriced, mediocre food and not transparent surcharge policies. Don't waste your money there are many other amazing restaurants in Austin!
