French
Dirty French is a New York bistro created by Major Food Group’s Mario Carbone, Rich Torrisi and Jeff Zalaznick. The restaurant takes its culinary cues from the timeless dishes and preparations of classic French bistros and enlivens them utilizing modern techniques and bold flavors. Dishes like Duck à l’Orange with ras el hanout and preserved oranges remain true to their French roots but are restyled with flavors that explore the breadth and depth of the global French culinary influence. Dirty French is located in the Ludlow Hotel in Manhattan’s storied Lower East Side.

Great service and nice atmosphere, with interesting food that has lots of North African influence. Grilled oysters were the highlight for me. Bass was ok but a little bland. Bread was also phenomenal.

Timeline:

Thursday around 10pm - reservation was made

Friday around noon - I emailed to cancel the reservation. We thought we wouldn’t be able to make it, and they had no phone number contact (phone number just says email us)

Friday at 6 pm - I check my email and see a notice that the email didn’t go through because I had a typo

Friday around 6pm - I email and ask if the reservation is still valid. We have determined that we can still make it.

Friday around 6:30 - I email again after no response

Friday around 8:30 - we still have no response, and I can’t enjoy my girlfriends birthday because I’m too anxious about where we are going to be eating.

Friday 8:31 - I get a response, and they ask what day my reservation is. I respond immediately

Friday around 9:00 - they email and confirm the reservation. Now I can relax

9:46 - we get to the restaurant for our 9:45 reservation. They tell us 1 couple is in front of us, but we are next. It shouldn’t be too long.

10:00 we are still standing at the door
10:15 we are still standing at the door
10:30 we are still standing at the door
10:35 ish - we are finally seated.

We order and everything is going well. They bring out and extra dip to apologize about their lateness, which was the best part of the dinner.

Then, after our appetizers we wait, and wait, and wait.
12:10 - we finally get our entree. It’s now after midnight and we have wanted to go home since 10:30pm.

2 stars because the chocolate ice cream was absolutely amazing.

I’ve never had a bad restaurant experience that made me leave a review, but this really made her birthday miserable.

Waiter was inattentive and a wine glass broke as my son was drinking from it. However the restaurant was very concerned and provided us with free desserts etc. but probably wouldn’t go back.

Restaurant was pretty much empty and waiter could not look after all the tables. Felt badly for him because he was a nice guy. $56 a person with tip for a small salad and 1 glass of wine.

We’d been to the bar a couple of times and got food envy watching other diners - we managed to squeeze in a Sunday night dinner and weren’t disappointed! Try the lamb carpaccio...

The service and ambiance was perfect. The food, however, was very disappointing compared to our past experience. It had been a few years since we were there and I remembered the food as exceptional. That was not the case this time. The best dish was the featured and complimentary focaccia with Boursin like cheese.

Been at Dirty French few times so this is not a one bad night. The appetizers are usually good with Carpaccio and Tartare as the best but the main course and deserts need some major improvements. We had the Trout and you could not taste the fish as it was bathed on so much herbs and garlic. Good fish need to speak by itself - bad fish needs to be covered and obfuscated by strong herbs and garlic - fish needs to taste like fish but not fishy (old). We changed as it was not good to the Sea Bass but it was smelly and it was definitely not fresh.
To close we ordered the a lemon tarte with almond and it was hard and stale - after 3 bites we had to leave it.
Service was good and attentive - Unfortunately this place has potential if management would be more attentive to the quality of the food and not just to fill the table and get the checks out.

I went with colleagues for dinner and they were very accommodating during a winter storm since we were super late for our reservation (the city was a mess bc of the snow) and we stayed late after the meal to talk business and they were very kind to never bother us and let us stay as long as we wanted. Real customer service.

The cuisine is supposed to be French, that's a lie. It's definitely neither here nor there, but when it's in your mouth you know you've come to the right place. Delicious play off French food I'd say.

The food and cocktails were delicious. My only gripe was that our reservation was at 945 and we didn’t get seated until 1030. The party before us, paid their bill and decided to just chill, Which is understandable given it’s a nice ambience, but extremely frustrating for us. That being said the staff was very apologetic and sent over some complimentary items, which were delicious and also very appreciated.

The food tries hard with creative twists but it all fell a bit flat and instead comes off as strange and unnecessary flourishes. We both got a wave of nausea a few hours later. The best part of the meal was the bread. What a disappointment!

This is what happens when a couple of guys who have a hit restaurant decide to branch out in to other cuisines - mediocrity at best. The service was quite good, but the food was pretty bad. The vegetable"mille feuille" managed to be both slimy and tough (even calling it that was a bad move as it is nothing like a real mille feuille), the roasted mushrooms were like rubber bands, the duck breast (which cost $38 and came with nothing else on the plate) was mostly under-cooked, and the pineapple banana "tatin" was a disaster in both concept and execution.

We had a terrific anniversary dinner. We booked on open table and told them that it was our anniversary but we didn't expect them to do anything but they brought us champagne at the beginning of the meal. Their service was wonderful, as was the food. Good vibes at this place. Don't turn down the bread, its phenomenal.

A bit dark to produce any nice food pics without having to use the flash and annoy fellow diners. Everything we ordered was delicious. Believe me, we worked our way through most of the apps, sides and 4 of the entrees! Wines a bit on the pricey side ($48 for a glass of rosé!).

The service was impeccable and unobtrusive. Would def visit again.

Went here for Saturday brunch to catch up with a friend. Definitely would recommend to a smaller group for a nice vibe where you can actually hear the people at your table speaking. Food and drinks came out slowly, but staff was great.
