About the restaurant

Oaxaca
About the restaurant
Tierra del Sol is a restaurant that takes its name from the Mixtec song, a melody that has become an Oaxacan hymn.
Just like that nostalgic song, this place celebrates in its own way the culture of an exceptional people: the Mixtec or ñuu savi; the first does it with her poetry and the second with her food.
Our chef: Olga Cabrera, cook, is the architect of such gastronomic praise, and she achieves it from the knowledge and respect for an ancient cuisine that she inherited from the women of her family and her community, Huajuapan – in the heart of the Mixteca region of Oaxaca -, a knowledge that seasons with his special passion for traditional dishes.

We went here for an anniversary dinner while in Oaxaca City and it was definitely a pleasant experience and great value for the money! The portions are also rather big. We arrived a little early and started in The Comal and enjoyed fresh tostadas with the various salsas and salts. It was nice that they explain their approach to the dining experience and then basically let you try the different combinations. Surprisingly I liked the "grasshopper salt" the best! (warm and smokey - not buggy tasting!) They came to get us once our table was ready. We sat on the terrace which was really nice - breezy and casual ambience. Dinner started with two drinks: El Que De Amarillo Se Viste (a mezcal and passion fruit drink - delish!) and Esencia (a mezcal and green chartreuse drink - herbal and refreshing). To start, we ordered Tostada which came with avocado, salsa and sausage. Really Good! Then for dinner we shared Laurel Mole (a delish dark brown mole with a fall-off-the-bone beef rib!) - Sooooo good! They give you a little pouch of warm tortillas (blue, white and yellow corn). As a side dish we ordered Bean Jicara, which was like a cold bean salad tossed with fresh herbs and chili slices in a light oil dressing. Also tasty! The prices are unbelievable. Eating at a Michelin Star restaurant in the US would equal a car payment, or in some cases a mortgage payment. Our total bill here for everything I listed above (and including tax and tip) came to the equivalent of $88 USD. Worth it 1000%.

About the restaurant

About the restaurant
Restaurante Catedral brings local, regional and international dishes together to offer a truly unique menu. Start your day off with a breakfast of Teotitlan Del Valle Style eggs or the Socorrido, which is a pork rind casserole with sausage, egg and cheese served in a red sauce with Water Chiles stripes. Restaurante Catedral is the perfect place for a date night. Come enjoy the house specialty of homemade ravioli with Hierba santa that is filled with suckling pork and topped with grated cheese. Restaurante Catedral also serves meat and seafood dishes, like the roasted beef tenderloin, grilled octopus and fried mullet.

the food was excellent only course that was a little lacking was the corn soup, I thought it was great value but possibly a little expensive compared to all the other food we have eaten. Friendly attentive staff. I will definitely be recommending this place to anyone that visits Oaxaca. When we return to this restaurant I look forward to seeing a chocolate dessert on the menu.
