We are not a ‘fancy pants’ establishment. Not in the least. We offer good quality, home-cooked, locally sourced (where possible) food. 90% of our menu is made on the premises. Certainly not ‘Pub Grub’ but not ‘Gastro Pub’ either. It’s good value for money. However, our standards are high, very high. Not only in the quality of the food that comes into and leaves the kitchen but also in the presentation, the delivery to the table and overall customer service. We’re definitely not ‘Silver Service’ either but all of our staff are attentive, smartly dressed and will always go that extra mile wherever they can. These are just some of the reasons we were awarded the Taste of the West GOLD award in 2019.
We are a dog friendly establishment, very dog friendly. However, please tell us at the time of booking so that we can place you in our Bar area , as opposed to our Restaurant.

A very nice hotel with excellent food choices, food cooked to perfection. Waitress service excellent very attentive nothing was too much trouble thank you for a excellent evening meal.

In the summer, probably one the best, if not the best restaurant terrace to sit on in Taunton.
Dogs are welcome.

Upstairs at Landrace is a casual neighbourhood bar & bistro, our food is led by ingredients which are carefully sourced from local farms and market gardens, we work with producers who have a natural approach to growing and use regenerative, high welfare farming techniques. The menu regularly features handmade pasta, line-caught Cornish fish and meat from Haye Farm in Devon, and Huntsham Farm in Herefordshire.
You can join us for a quick plate of pasta at lunchtime or a longer celebratory meal with friends & family in the evening. Our menu changes regularly, you can find sample menus updated weekly on our website.

The wine/cider list changes regularly, focusing on small European growers and makers. All our wines have been made following low intervention organic/biodynamic practices. We also pour many local naturally made ciders and perrys. Our soft drinks are made in house showcasing seasonal cordials, and aperitif/digestif offerings can bookend your meal if desired.

We ate here for the first time and it was very good. Staff were excellent, we had people with us who had dietary issues and it was dealt with so well. The staff are busy, but helpful and very efficient. The menu choice is quite small, but an exceedingly variety. We loved the cuttlefish stew, one of the tastiest things I have had for a long time, and the beef ravioli…but it was all very good. Good portion sizes. It is sharing plates, but I feel you could easily do starters and mains, with some vegetables on the side if you prefer that. A delightful find, we will be back, and would totally recommend

First time diner at The Sheep and Penguin for Sunday Lunch and can fully recommend it. The roast dinners were excellent and included a variety of perfectly cooked seasonal vegetables and an amazing cauliflower, leek and broccoli in cheese - all included in the price. Staff were all very helpful and welcoming. Can't comment on the starters or desserts as the portion size for the roasts plus vegetables are such that neither were required. Although it is away from the center of Wells definitely worth a visit. Also, dog friendly. Will be back to sample the regular daily offerings.
