Wonderful meal. Would eat here every time I am in San Diego!
The ambiance is charming and the waitstaff attentive. The steaks are outstanding. The chicken marsala however was tough and too sweet for our taste. It was also disappointing to one in our party that they did not offer a gluten free pasta. Overall, a good but not great experience.
Classic Old Style Italian--the kind you don't find all that often, especially in San Diego. The food was perfect yet surprisingly reasonably priced--the kind of food you would find at a high end Italian restaurant in New York City or similarly pricey venue. The wait staff was attentive and charming. Get the Bananas Foster--made from scratch at your table.
Authentic delicious Italian cuisine! The service is exceptional and the food exquisite! We had a table of seven and we could carry on a conversation with the entire table. The music does not overpower conversation but transports everyone to the ambiance of Italy with treasured home cooked cuisine. They remembered that we mentioned celebrating an achievement during our initial reservation and surprised the two recipients with a special desert. Thank you, Sal, and your staff, for making everyone in our group feel like family!
"de Medici Cucina Italiana" was the culinary highlight of our trip to San Diego!
Excellent Veal, had the Osso Bucco and Veal Parm with a pasta starter. Great food, service was a little slow and we never had the specials read to us. Tad impersonal - but food was great.
We were visiting San Diego and met my nephew and his girlfriend for dinner here because it came highly recommended.
I had veal parmigiana and it was pretty good, so was the Cesar salad. Everything else was a disaster. My husband couldn’t even eat the calamari fra diavolo. I would never recommend it. It was a waste of $400.
Always love dining here. Both the food and the service are just outstanding. If you’re looking for authentic Italian cuisine you’ll find it at this restaurant.
The service here is amazing , you feel like royalty ! Will be returning again and again!
De Medici is one of my all time favorite restaurants in San Diego, they have great food, service & ambiance. I was celebrating my birthday and had a great time!
I have eaten here many times and it is one of my favorite restaurants in San Diego. I would normally have given them 5 stars but I think I need to be a little more critical this time. The service was excellent as always, as was the ambiance. The meal I came here for is the Cioppino which is normally excellent. This time I would say 90% of the Cioppino was made up of calamari with only a couple of shrimp, two small pieces of white fish and six small clams. The taste of the broth wa excellent but they really skimped on the quality this time. The one suggestion I would also have for them is to offer a bread basket with some variety. The buns they offer are nice but bland and they brought us two pads of butter, it was like going to IHOP. Where is the nice small dish of soft butter and seasoned olive oil dip? I have over looked this before but some updating would be nice. I’ll be posting on Trip Advisor as well as I am one of the top 2% of read posters in San Diego. Maybe a change will be made
Waiter was terrible. Had to finish with another waiter. Won’t go back.
Food was not up to par with the prices they charge.
I ordered a pasta dish and asked if I could have it with oil, garlic, white wine and calmari. The pasta arrived sitting in a bowl of liquid. Pasta was therefore too soft. Not much flavor as well. My husbands food was great however.
The food, service and atmosphere here is amazing. The drinks are tasty and it's a good price for downtown to get a double there. The lobster bisque, spaghetti, chicken parmesan, veal parmesan, and cannoli were all delicious!
Amazing service by Ravi
The lobster bisque, seafood stuffed sole and tiramisu were delectable. Hearty portions, enough for dinner tomorrow.
We went to celebrate some family birthdays and had a great experience.
My wife and I went there for our 1 year anniversary. Her gnocchi was delicious and I ordered the filet of sole and it was the best seafood dish I have ever had. Only downside was the menu for sole said $29 and the bill for it was $40. I assume it was a difference of daily market pricing but was more than happy to pay that much for what the meal was so didn’t bring it up. Amazing date night location.
Excellent meal with our family & friends. Highly recommend this restaurant for an authentic Italian meal. Wonderful atmosphere!
Repeated our order 3 times. Waiter couldn’t see and couldn’t grasp the English language. Had us point to the menu and still delivered the wrong dish. Told us it’s what we ordered and then charged us $6.00 more for what he brought than what was ordered. Absolutely ridiculous considering the bill was over $160 for two. Stay away.
Best place in the Gaslamp district.
Classic Italian food prepared very, very well. I ordered off the menu and the kitchen responded expertly. I'll continue to come back again and again.
The Ceaser salad was made table side. It was a fun experience. The meal was delicious.
The food was so good!
The garlic bread is not good at all. It’s soft and soggy. Could do so much better with good Italian bread.
We wanted to sit outside to celebrate our anniversary. The street is very loud with traffic but worse is that we sat at the end of the patio with a clear plastic divider between this restaurant and the fast food place next door. We had 3 Kids from the fast food place sitting in seats directly above us & facing us while we ate. Very weird. Steak was under cooked and lobster risotto was not very good. Risotto should be creamy, this risotto was harder, sticking to the lobster instead of a creamy consistency.
However, service was impeccable from the hostess to the waitstaff. Incredibly professional, friendly and knowledgeable. Very warm, friendly vibe.
Absolutely terrific dinner! From the moment we arrived until we left the service was superb. Our waiter Juan was very helpful with pairing wine for the dinner we selected and let us participate in the "aeration" of the wine. The cannelloni appetizers were delicious and not too filling to start with. The Osso Buco and Veal Chop Parmigiana was plentiful and tasted great with the wine. We had to save room for dessert to say that we tried all aspects of the dining. The Tiramisu and Gelato Berries was perfect with the dessert wine. Definitely a repeat experience when visiting San Diego and will tell all of this superb dining establishment.
I absolutely love dining here! The service was amazing, the food was delicious, and the atmosphere is wonderful. They even adhered to my request to get out of the in about an hour. They made the date night perfect!
This is a charming, authentic Italian restaurant. The service is impeccable. The owner greets you and is happy to make menu recommendations. The food was delicious! Tiramisu was outstanding. The atmosphere is cozy and you can enjoy your dinner with conversation.
This Italian restaurant on fifth street was fantastic. I ordered veal Parmesan with marinara sauce. It was so big I had to eat it the next day also and it was just as good. It came with a side of spaghetti which costed extra but was worth it. Our service was perfect. We had a great time and I give it five stars.
Delicious traditional Italian food, romantic atmosphere, but most all, impeccable service! I highly recommend the lasagna bolognese (sub the red sauce for pink sauce for a special treat!), as well as the tableside caesar salad. We will definitely be making a trip back to Medici Cucina. :)
THE SERVICE WAS EXCELLENT, VEAL CHOP AL HERB SUPERB!!, HOW EVER WINE WASN'T STORED PROPERLY, BREAD DISAPPOINTING BUT NON FOODIE WILL ENJOY "GARLIC BREAD" , SWEET CARROTS NOT MY CUP OF TEA, PENNE ARRIBIATA NOT AL DENTE MORE LIKE MARINARA NO SPICE.. THE WAITER AND ALL STAFF WERE EXCELLENT, WITH REGARDS TO HOSTESS WE WERE INVISIBLE TO HER.. BECAUSE OF VEAL CHOP WE WILL GO BACK!!! IT IS OUR SECOND VISIT, MOVED DOWNTOWN IN JANUARY..
Good overall. A bit of inflexibility in the menu.
Make sure Justin is your waiter
Several years ago, after serving as an expert witness in a patent trial in San Diego, the defendant and I went to Medici for a decompression dinner. It was an excellent choice and I remembered it when my wife and I were there for a conference last week. Things had changed.
When visiting an Italian restaurant, we order the veal dishes because it's hard to get good veal in supermarkets and butcher shops. Although we had told our waiter that the dishes we wanted, but he came waltzing across the room with a pricey selection of Saran-wrapped chops. We declined.
For appetizers, we ordered bruschetta and carpaccio. The carpaccio was nicely done, but the bruschetta was a large mass of tomato on toasted bread without seasonings (no basil, no garlic, olive oil). In addition, the tomatoes were tasteless. With eyes closed, you bit into a wet mush.
The veal was excellent. The Veal Picatta was good. Nicely seasoned with a tart sauce. But the Veal Marsala was smothered with mushrooms that had the consistency of being boiled rather than sautéed, despite the waiter's assurances that they were sautéed.
Thing have certainly changed since my last visit. On balance, the Medici Cucina Italiana is not a restaurant we would return to.
Excellent all around as always - food, service, ambience is awesome. New floors give it a “fresh” new look.
We searched for a romantic, upscale restaurant for our anniversary and de Medici Cucina Italiana was a good choice. We were seated in the side room, which was quite loud with other energetic diners, so no romantic setting for us. Service was great, we were never rushed and enjoyed a long, leisurely meal. Started with a bottle of surprisingly affordable red wine (zin). We ordered the ceasar salad (must be for two peeps at $15 per person!) made table side and though the presentation was wonderful, the dressing was meh (for $30, we expected a creamy sensation, but were a bit disappointed and wouldn't order it again). For our mains, Hubby had the osso bucco and it was lean and tender, no fat, done to perfection, with risotto as the perfect complement. Asparagus side was delish. I had the Tortellini alla Romana, creamy creamy with pancetta and peas. Yummmm. Servings were ample. We were treated to a comp, shared slice of cheesecake dessert that hit the spot. There are some many other dishes on the menu we want to try there, we will be back.
great food, excellent service! Frank Sinatra music in the background...
Great as always, see my previous reviews nothing has changed. I come here several times a year.
