We celebrated Mother's Day before the ballet at the Civic. The food was generous and creative. We ran out of time because we didn't realize the apple streudal was baked to order but they packed it to go (delish).
Went here for early Mother's Day brunch on Saturday. The "host" waved in the direction of the tables upon our arrival but wasn't interested in seating us. That was the only experience I would label as unpleasant at Currant. Otherwise, the server was pleasant and attentive, the food (and beverages) was DELICIOUS, and the mimosas were flowing. If you purchase bottomless mimosas they provide a large carafe of sparkling wine and then a completely separate glass of OJ so you can make your own mimosas. And they give you a large goblet, not a small flute that you have to constantly refill. They definitely keep the carafes coming! It was wonderful. My Mother truly enjoyed her experience and brunch. The area is VERY limited in street parking, so keep that in mind.
I would have given it 5 stars except they didn't have the mussels, which was on their online menu, and which was why two of us wanted to go here for. Also, their brunch menu was limited and I didn't see on their website that Saturday lunch was a brunch menu. Hamburgers were delicious and begnets were incredible, definitely order them with the lemon curd if you go.
I took my great friend for her birthday breakfast. The service, food, and ambiance was great!!!! This is one of my fav restaurants in town.
Much better experience than my recent dinner. Lunch is their meal!
We were surprised that the restaurant was basically empty. That was ok because we could speak. Our server was a bit inexperienced, and seemed to struggle with items that weren't available, such as drinks. I ordered a sparkling wine and she came back to make sure I was aware it was sparkling, they were out of a beer that was offered, etc. With no other customers it would seem like those issues could be managed better. We were just at a business meal, and in conversation, so it was just a bit awkward. I work across the street, and have avoided this restaurant in the past because of service issues - this was an improvement, and the food was better than usual.
This is becoming one of my favorite places for early dinner and cocktails before theater. The service is always impeccable and the food never disappoints.
We had a wonderful Easter Brunch. We sat outside which was wonderful. Our waiter was great however he was very busy inside.
Simple menu, good service. Pricing high for value.
Very nice atmosphere and the food and service was great
We were a big group, but our meals all came out mainly at once. We had one snafu...we made it clear that we had a member of our party with a nut allergy and that we wanted the Brie without the nuts on top, but the two we ordered still came out with the nuts. This was quickly corrected, which was appreciated.
Currant American Brasserie was such a great dining experience. Jorge (our server) was attentive and kind and so eager to help (and encourage our brunch decisions!) From the minute we walked in the door we felt welcome and like a cherished guest weighted with a warm casualness. The bottomless mimosas proved it was no ones first rodeo. Really wonderful experience!
Servers were not very attentive, had to flag them down a few times. Companion's requested well done steak was rarer than my medium rare (his had no mushrooms as requested so I know that one was his)
Weekend brunch - wonderful and varied menu. Food was great. Service very attentive. Loved the meal.
Great food and great drinks!
What a delightful place. We went for Sunday brunch. All the staff were incredibly warm and attentive. Had a carafe of mimosas that was a steal. Started with beignets with the bacon pecan maple syrup. Wow! We both had the croque madame which were absolutely delicious. From start to finish a wonderful experience.
We always go to Current before attending a show at the Civic Theatre - close to each other and the food is always delicious. Try the Croque Madam - it is outstanding!
Currant's has a scratch kitchen. The food was absolutely delicious from the first bite to the last. Yum!
We selected Currant because we were attending a play and it was close. We arrived 1 hour and 40 minutes prior to the play. When the waiter arrived to take our order, we alerted him to our time schedule and placed our complete order. He brought our drinks, forgot the appetizer and water that we ordered and we didn’t see him for the next 50 minutes. When we grabbed him walking by our food was immediately brought out. My husband’s seared ahi was completely cooked and dry. My food was good but merely warm. I think that the restaurant has potential but the service was among the worst that I’ve seen.
Went for Sunday brunch before seeing Hamilton at the San Diego Civic Theater. Exceptional service. Started with their signature beignets which were a mouthful of heaven. Went with a lunch option - hamburger with caramelized onions and avocado. Yum. Can't wait to go back.
Walking distance from the Civic Center Theatre!
Great dinner and we had fun before the musical.
My croque monsieur was a little too gooey and bland unlike normal but the apps and dinner was still very good.
Having said that, it was a great place for mom's birthday dinner!
Mediocre food in small very portions, not worth even the moderate prices. The "salad" accompanying a tiny sandwich was just a small heap of greens with no discernible dressing. The apple strudel was so dry it was barely edible. We choose to sit outside, which was a mistake because of traffic and construction noise. Service was pretty good. We won't be going back.
It was ok, though I was expecting better. We waited a long time for our food once we ordered. Folks who were seated after us somehow got their food before us. There was not alot of attention to our table so we were left to flagging down our waiter as he rushed by. Maybe they were short staffed that night. Other than that, the restaurant is a sweet little spot that I would recommend overall
We visited the restaurant prior to going to see Hamilton at the San Diego Civic Center. The location was excellent for that, the food was great and the service could not have been better. We will definitely come back.
We had dinner here before the theater - along with many others who had the same idea. So the restaurant was slammed but they still got our meal out quickly and it was delicious. Wait staff was excellent. We will be back.
The food was very good. We had the seabass and the salmon dinners and an appetizer of truffle-infused parmesan fries (amazing). Delicious spinach mashed potatoes; I wasn't sure what to expect but they were fanstastic! We chose this place because of great reviews for pre-theatre dining and a record for getting people out on time for the show. Looks like everyone had the same idea! The servers were running around like crazy around 6:15 - 6:30pm trying to get the bills settled quickly. They did a good job and always with a smile. Although we made it in plenty of time, I would allow a bit more time when we come in the future to avoid that stress. The tables are close together so the seating is cozy, and it's really loud with a full restaurant. However, it was a fun evening and we'll be back. As a side note, the Valet attendants for Hotel Sofia are GREAT. Very personable and friendly on the night we were there (1/9/18). I wish I caught the one guy's name - he was so helpful on that rainy and windy night.
Our waiter got our order wrong but realized this after 45 mins of waiting. Then had to remove a couple items ordered because we didn't have time to eat as we had to run to our Broadway show.
We had a reserved table right next to the window at the high chairs. Liked that they had coat/purse racks for easy storage. The food was very delicious and highly presentable. Lots of flavor and tasted very fresh. Came here due to a recommendation from a family member and it did not disappoint!
Very friendly a responsive server! My wife and I both had tasty breakfast items for brunch. Within a short walk from the Civic Theater; we had “our shot” to see Hamilton. One small recommendation: improve your Bloody Mary’s. The mix seemed diluted.
This is a great little place. I didnt know it was the hotel Sofia restaurant. The food was good, the coffee was strong and the location was a block away from the mall so it was very busy or loud. Perfect for families and groups. The beignets are a must here.
Great food, fantastic beignets! Recommend having them AFTER brunch, not before the main course arrives :)
The food was really delicious and the restaurant was a perfect level of busy - not empty but not packed. Our server was attentive
Great service. Beautiful ambiance. Unfortunately, food was bland and wasn’t good at all. Not worth the price of the food.
The service was lacking. I had to flag down a server to order a drink. No one came to my table for 10 minutes and there were lots of empty tables in the room. Popcorn tasty but super greasy, not sure if it was worth 6$. Beautiful space and great location.
Excellent food and friendly service. Price point for dinner was reasonable.
Place was empty on Sunday at noon. Good menu, above average food, horrible bloody Mary’s.
Great restaurant in the Sophia Hotel. Loved it!
Food was plentiful and delightful
Took my kids to this restaurant while I was on a business trip. The meal was good but unremarkable. I had risotto and my kids ordered pasta. It was a bit away from the convention center. There were no cabs in sight on the ride back, so we had to call Uber. While this restaurant was not bad in any way, I wouldn't go back.
