Lovely fish and chips, attentive and friendly staff, and people watching with outdoor seating. Many neighbourhood locals returning here, great spot.

The interior is fairly simple, with a dark colour scheme, faux marble tables, dark wooden chairs, green banquette-style seating, and decorative floral wall panels illuminated by LED lighting. There are around six tables outside with metal tables and chairs. The restaurant also features an open-plan kitchen and bar area, which means cooking aromas can be noticeable when food is being prepared. The restaurant offers both breakfast and à la carte menus. The staff were exceptionally friendly, attentive, and welcoming throughout the meal, giving the place a warm family-run feel. On a particularly hot day (around 28°C), I was also grateful that they had fans running inside, which made dining much more comfortable. For starters, I tried the Soft Shell Crab Devilled. The dish consisted of three generously sized pieces of well-cooked crab served with vegetables. While it was prepared well, the flavour profile wasn’t quite to my personal taste. The standout dish was the Chicken Kottu – shredded flatbread stir-fried with chicken and vegetables. It was hearty, comforting, and full of flavour. I would have preferred a little more spice, although the waiter did kindly ask whether I wanted it made spicier. The portion size was generous and makes an excellent lunch option if you’re looking for something filling. Overall, Ceylon’s 1948 is a pleasant lunch spot with friendly service, good portions, and some well-executed Sri Lankan dishes. An added bonus is that no service charge is added, which is becoming increasingly rare in London.

What an experience in a restaurant that actually listens to a diner and produces food that meets all expectations. Lovely staff and great space with lots of room for individual conversation. Lovely wine and liquor selection.
