We went for a late dinner (8:45 pm) on Friday night. It was too noisy for us inside, so we asked to be moved outside on the porch. It was perfect. We enjoyed a great meal. I had the potato soup and the lamb shank which were pefect.. My wife had salad with fried oysters and duck breast confit. She says it was the best sauce ever. We split the bread pudding for dessert. Excellent dinner. I like the street sign outside. The street is Motley Lane and it lines up with the Cru Cafe sign exactly.
I just moved back after living in Charleston about 5 years ago and Cru was always my favorite restaurant in town. I hadn’t been back since I left so I took my gf there for Valentine’s Day. I was a bit nervous because I had hyped the place up...a lot and was worried it wouldnt be as great as I remembered. I was wrong. It was just as incredibly delicious as I always remembered. If not better. Cru remains my favorite place in town and will continue to be my go-to spot for out of town guests, date nights, and any other excuse I can think of.
Quaint dining experience with excellent food! Small dining space but was amazing experience. We will return and bring our friends!
Great as usual
Amazing Valentine’s day dinner. Excellent food and service. Shoutout to Chelsea, she’s awesome!
Food was very yummy! Tables are close together and very loud. Couldn't hear server or each other b/c of other guest.
Welcoming and friendly staff, not overbearing, food was excellent, calamari was delicious, basil shrimp pasta also excellent, fish of the day was good and perfectly cooked although slightly bland for my taste. Excellent value for the food quality. We will definitely return to Cru Cafe!
This was a return trip to Cru after first dining there about 2 years ago, and it was as good as we remembered.
Great menu, food, and service. Our server, Chelsea, helped us select our meals and everyone was delighted. One of our favorite restaurants and a Charleston classic.
Especially nice with the 40% price roll back recently. Nice fireplace, best salmon we have ever had.
Best mac n cheese. Great, great place.
First time dining at Cru. Food was very good. Will definitely go back
Great food. Great service. Friendly warm atmosphere.
We had an incredible meal. After a long day in Charleston we scored an early reservation by accident. We had planned a five star sixtieth birthday weekend in Rome but the weather looked dicey so we opted for a quick trip from Raleigh to a town our family always talked about. Grandma zipped down for the premiere of Gone With the Wind. Mom spent Delta Airlines layovers at the Meeting House so we chose three great days there as our base of operations. The Pennensula Grill was booked until 9:30 but we scored a Coconut cake on the way back from the Cru. The bar at Husk filled in our burger daytime needs (yes Spotted Pig NYC may close but this incarnation is even better) our favorite was Cru.
The presentation was exceptional but bring an appetite. Every bite is a treasure. Romantic to a fault. Thank you.
The off-menu items we tried were special -- outstanding. Braised boneless veal short ribs was a new item for me and exceeded expectations dramatically. The julienned vegetable salad was also outstanding. The server was informal, attentive, and helpful in discussing menu items. An outstanding dining experience.
Always our favorite when in Charleston. Maybe 20 meals so far and only praise for great food and fun staff! A real winner!!!
Food was beautifully prepared and very good! A great Charleston experience. Wait staff was exceptional! Great choice for us!!
After reading all the reviews I decided on Cru Cafe and glad I did. Now it is definitely not anything to look at but once seated it was okay. Table of 5 very tight on a Saturday afternoon in February. Our waitress was great. I can highly recommend the four cheese macaroni and the fried onions. I enjoyed the goat cheese and mesclun greens. Other choices for the table were: Garlic Chicken Club(very good), a special for the day burrito(equally as good), and the French Dip. The bread on the sandwiches was delicious. I will definitely be returning!!!!
Awesome as always. A Charleston fav I visit on every trip to that city!
The food and service were excellent. We were in a group of 6 women and sat comfortably with potential room for more. All the food was fresh and delicious, everyone loved their meals. Staff were friendly and prompt refilling drinks, service from appetizers to main course was seamless. There was not a lot of waiting between courses but we also did not feel rushed. The restaurant was clean and staff seemed to interact with each other in a fun and professional manner. I will definitely recommend this restaurant to others.
Delicious food in an intimate setting. Service was excellent as well. Will definitely come again!
Gear vegetarian lunch options
Top rated? Staff was gracious, food and service great. We tried to cancel a later reservation there, but couldn’t and forgot to remind Cru. We came at 5:00 instead
Outstanding food and service ! Loved sitting at the bar and watching them prepare the food in the kitchen !
As always Cru was nice for a casual lunch.
It was our 3rd time going to the restaurant and it was amazing! We look forward to dining there every time we manage a trip to Charleston. We have been there twice for lunch and for dinner the last time. We are always telling others to go check it out!
Wonderful food, service and unique setting! Will look forward to another visit.
We went for a late lunch and were seated at the "chef's table." So in addition to being well-fed, we were also entertained by the kitchen staff. The tomato-basil soup was delicious, and our entrees(portobello sandwich & burger) were accompanied by sauteed yellow squash and truffle fries--all very well prepared. The staff is efficient and courteous, and the value is excellent.
The Cru Cafe is our favorite place for lunch in Charleston.
The freshest ingredients along with fresh seafood served by friendly staff in a bright airy room or better yet on the Verandah combine to make this a great restaurant. We’ve never had poor service or a bad meal there. Remember to make reservations as seating is limited.
The food is high-end while the t-shirt clad employees and low-key decor is warm and welcoming. All silverware is replaced between courses and the food is GREAT! Highly recommend just communicating the disconnect you’ll feel when you first walk in.
The food and service was great! Go you won't be disappointed.
Great food. Hasn't disappointed. Fun atmosphere, especially if you don't mind tight quarters.
Brandan was fantastic

Excellent meal. Very casual atmosphsre. The Servers were wonderful. Very small place. They turn tables over quickly but you don't feel rushed. You feel like they value your business. The food is outstanding! Had the local fish and the scallop dishes. Both were excellent. Creative. Would strongly recommend not missing a chance to eat here!
Love love love Cru. Never had a bad meal there. Wait staff are all experienced and excellent while the kitchen is turning out sumptuous food. What's not to like!
Great food. Wonderful wait staff. Cudos to all.
Excellent meal and service for a couple’s dinner. The pork egg rolls and oyster salad were the best.
Wonderful service and great food. Casual atmosphere right near the downtown Market. Fish prepared very well. Best fried green tomatoes we've had. Well worth going.
Great food, excellent service. Highly recommend
We love Cru, one of only two restaurants that deliver the whole package EVERY time we visit, many over 19 years. Thanks for consistent excellence!
Great from start to finish - warm greeting, great service, everything from appetizers through desserts was fantastic. Will definitely go there again.
