Coliseum Pool & Grill - The Resort at Pelican Hill
We chose the day after Valentines to go, thinking would be less busy and better food. The ambience was zero...felt like restaurant was closing for the season..empty buffet carts lined up against the walls, no greenery, very stark. The food was overpriced & very mediocre. The meat was overdone, potatoes cold, fish had no taste, bread was hard, ice cream sundae less than a chain ice cream parlor. We live nearby and have eaten here many times, and enjoyed, so maybe picked the wrong day..right after V day. The service was excellent. I can’t say we will be returning anytime soon.
Service was outstanding and very low profile, we weren’t asked every nine seconds if we were “doing okay?”, so that was very appreciated - and yet, when we did need something, our waitress already expected it! When talking about “anticipating your guests needs”, these are true pros! Lovely experience that was also incredibly relaxing, and we could not have been more pleased! Will be back.
It was as everything and more , my server felt like she was family so to speak, she made our lunch even better she just didnt treat us a customer's , superseded my expectations
The View from the outdoor patio of this restaurant is unparalleled! You might think you are in another country! The food was delicious & the staff were all very kind. I would highly recommend coming here! This is also a fantastic location for wedding receptions!
Great ambiance, terrific service, wonderful view! How can you go wrong? Priced well for excellent quality.
could use serious improvement in menu, plating, cocktail
making and service
Perfect place to dine and enjoy panoramic breath taking views and nosh on consistently delicious eats. Always a treat to come to the Pelican Hill Resort property.
I suggested this restaurant to a group of friends, for us to try something new during Newport Restaurant Week. What an embarrassment that turned out to be for me. First of all, when I made the OpenTable reservation I was presented with a pop-up menu to select "standard" seating, or "outdoor". I chose "outdoor", as a key point of going to Coliseum Pool & Grill was to sit with a view of the pool and ocean beyond. Well when we arrived and checked-in we were told that we had to sit inside, because the outside seating was not reservable, but rather first-come-first-served only, and there was a 1 hr wait! I explained to the host that I specifically selected "outdoor" in OpenTable, and he said "yeah we need to get that fixed". So they apparently know about this problem, but let people keep getting deceived. Where we ended being seated there was no view of anything but the stale buffet. We sat down without making any fuss, but then were left there with no one attending to us for seemingly an eternity. After a server finally did arrive it was another eternity just to get coffee and water. It took at least 30 min to get coffee and water delivered! I was getting a headache. A cocktail actually came out faster. It was another really long wait to get the food, and when we did get it, despite that fact that we each ordered a different thing, none of us thought their food was anything better than mediocre. I think people are being too easy on this place. This restaurant is in the very high end Pelican Hill Resort! They should be absolutely ashamed of having this level of service and food quality in one of their restaurants. If any of this happened at a cheap beach cafe I don't think it would be received well, but to experience it at a 5-star resort was truly unexpected and unacceptable. Having said all that, after we were done eating we walked outside, and the pool, grounds and views ARE stunning, but that credit goes to the architects of the resort, not the management.
Beautiful with great service, very pricey! Brunch has a good selection, I think $55 with no champagne is a bit much. It was delicious though!
Excellent staff and great service! Highly recommend this restaurant!
Another outstanding weekend at the Coliseum Pool Restaurant.
The view and atmosphere was amazing. However, the service and the food was disappointing and did not live up to its hype. Would suggest the restaurant to improve their attention to customer.
While I only gave 2 stars, I know that the Coliseum is worthy of more. We have eaten here many other times and will try it a gain. This time, though, they were not a restaurant that belonged in a resort, such as Pelican Hill.
Our Server was amazing! My daughter had spicy sauce with her tacos and her mouth was burning so we asked our Server for water and with water, she brought milk to neutralize the spice... she went above and beyond to make my daughter feel better!! :)
When our fillet mignons were served, the server didn’t know who got what (medium rare vs medium) and he got our plates mixed up. Really surprised to see this from a real high end restaurant like Coliseum!
Other than that, every else was perfect. Will definitely come back.
Go for lunch not dinner
rest of food is good
Always a pleasure, the servers, the view magnificent. Had the pleasure of meeting a lady that handles the falcon, to deter pigeons away. Lovely day for our group.
Beautiful venue, friendly service, excellent food.Thanks.
Would like to say thank you to the manager, Charmaine, who worked so hard to make us all comfortable and able to enjoy our family get together.
I highly recommend this location. It has excellent views and excellent services. Blaze was excellent at greeting us and preparing our table. The tempura shrimp with peppers was our favorite. We brought our Nephew for his birthday and he was planning on proposing to his girlfriend. Every single dish we ordered was a hit. Had the pleasure of meeting Alex at the bar. He was excellent and a pleasure to have a conversation with. Now let me tell you about Charmaine. She is excellent with kids and at providing excellent customer service. She connected with my son and my 4 year old nephew. I highly recommend this location for the service, food, and views!
You can't deny the beautiful view from the patio - it overlooks the pool, golf course, and the ocean. The food is good, nothing outrageously creative but solid food - the have good salads, burger, and full bar. Bar area is great for watching games. My only complaint is when you go there on the weekends, the service is not up to par with the rest of the week. Even making reservations, you have to wait and waiters are running around and literally running into people, plants, and spilling beverages and sauces. So maybe they should consider hiring more staff for weekends? In any case, the view is great and food is solid so it's worth a trip here.
Service is steadily declining. Always a wait with reservations and the team always looks confused. So sad for such a special place.
I really lovre The Pelican Resort so it pains me to write anything negative about it but the service was slow, the food was beyond mediocre. They obviously do not take their food ssriously. They were setting up for a sunday brunch on Friday night too. Main thing was that the food was not good.
One of the best places for quality food, excellent service, ocean view and sunsets. Valet parking is free (please tip).
Birthday, all good!!!
I'm sorry to say that the Coliseum has pretty much gone down hill. Don't come to eat, food is mediocre at best. Maybe a glass of wine or cocktail over looking the pool is ok but this place lacks attention from managers. Our waitress was talking to the hostess much too often. Place was noisy, freezing cold and very uncomfortable. They left the doors open for the servers convience to reach the patio. We wont be coming back.
The waitress was rude and interrupted me while I was giving my order. Made reservations and they gave two tables to groups with non reservations before us because they "checked in first", what? Will not go back there even though my wife spoke highly of the place.
Our food was great, but the service was underwhelming. Drinks and food were extremely slow given how empty the place was. Limited check in with the table didn't help.
Outstanding service & excellent food. Views are forever!
John Payne Family - Oregon
Understaffed on Xmas and very poor overall service. Manager had to take money off our bill for how bad it was. I would not recommend the restaurant or the service. The place tailors to higher end clientele and employs young kids, who are first time employees.
Christmas Day with our small family and couldn’t have been a more beautiful setting. We had the luxury of walking the grounds before our dinner - seeing the palladium, golf course and watching the sunset. Adorable waitress. Will go back.
Great food and very good service. We are always met with a smile when we arrive and are seated promptly based on our reservation. The management and staff are excellent.
This was our second time having brunch here. The first was much better and as a result we probably won't go again. Price is very high. Food is good but you can get good food a lot cheaper than here. The roast beef was done perfectly, the bacon was not. Salmon was relatively fresh, baked goods tasted day old. Fruit was fresh and nice. Waited a long time to get our check. It's a buffet so service folks bring coffee and tea and checks, but still expect full service tipping. Had reservations but couldn't reserve outside seats. Overall, not worth the cost. Even with a living social coupon.
Have been to the Coliseum many times for lunch and dinner. We always have excellent service and the view is amazing. I’ve told the staff how grateful I am about the fact that they are welcoming to our little girls and kids menu has salmon!!! Good food variety as well on lunch and dinner menu.
Food could be better when you never changes
Very pretty setting
Service is very slow you get your order and then they disappear
We had our Christmas business dinner in the patio and looked forward to its usual beautiful ambiance. However, its Christmas and we were disappointed that there was no Christmas music to set a celebratory dinner mood. No music at all. Food was good as always, but menu was limited that night. My other experiences at the Coliseum would be rated with 4 and 5 stars. This is the first time that I've been disappointed and its probably due to staffing issues that night. However, doesn't every business at one time or another have staffing/employee let-downs?
Great place to eat and enjoy a spectacular view. The food is good and the service wonderful.
Great Place to eat and enjoy the view. Excellent service.
Food really isn’t very good
Beautiful place, great service but the food is just ok
