PEACE, LOVE AND GOOD HEALTH! CHIESA
Chiesa (Italian for church) is a quaint Italian restaurant featuring generations of family recipes, housemade pasta, and local ingredients. Located in the historic Montford neighborhood, Chiesa (pronounced kee-ay-sa) is housed in a building that has been at the center of the community for over one hundred years, serving as the local grocery store, then as a church, and since 2014, the neighborhood Italian restaurant. Our friendly staff welcomes all guests as family, providing a warm and comfortable atmosphere for both inside and patio dining (when weather permits).

Great food and intriguing specials.
Loved this place. Food so good I was tempted to lick the plate
If you want to go out to dinner and feel like you're part of a family, this is the place! The owner and staff are warm and welcoming. And the food is outstanding! Everything on the menu is perfectly prepared, from home-made pastas to impeccable vegetables to delicious meats and poultry. One of the very best in Asheville!
We loved Chiesa!! Wish we lived closer as we would go at least once a week!! Highly recommend it!
Just wonderful as always!
Everything was very good. The special was lobster cake and was incredible.
I am from Philly and did not give a perfect score because the meatballs were not up to my Philly Italian restaurants standards and were luke warm.
Everything else Great .
We have been there several times and will definitely be going back many more times. There were four in our party. We all had something different, and we all loved what we had.
A night out with friends: good wine, nice salads and great lobster ravioli special with fresh vegetables. We also appreciated the easy parking in Montfort. Don't hesitate.
Chiesa is in a building that was once a church, and there are clever references to the history including original pews used for seating and cocktails such as the Old and New Testament. The food was outstanding, the staff friendly, and our server, Mateo, knowledgeable and helpful. Our family had a blast and would highly recommend!
I was terribly disappointed. I booked well over 2 weeks in advance but when we arrived, we were seated at the only table stuck in the middle of the restaurant, across from the service bar, despite the fact that there were other tables available. It was incredibly loud. We had no less than 4 waiters, starting with the first one who never gave us the specials, though we heard him telling the table next to ours about them in great detail (after we had already ordered). We were asked by three different waiters if we wanted dessert so clearly no coordination there. Then, when we were given the check, it didn't have a place to write a tip. So after trying to get someone's attention, we decided to sign it and left. We were almost at our car when we were literally chased down by a server asking "Did you mean not to leave a tip?" Really?!? We described the whole experience and to her credit, she did apologize. All this said, the food was good, though because of the very poor customer service, I would not recommend this place.
Excellent food - especially suits my vegan diet.
I had a light dinner, Brussels Sprouts, so that I could have the amazing Apple Bread Pudding with Ice Cream.
I would definitely return to this restaurant. The mussel appetizer was amazing. We dipped the warm bread in the broth until the plate was empty. All pastas are homemade and delicious. My friend had the Mediterranean pasta dish and loved it. You must love olives to enjoy the dish. I had fresh fettuccine with meat sauce. The past was a bit cold but the sauce was very good. Since I love a good Bolognese sauce, I probably wouldn't order this again and would try a different sauce.
Service was very good but when it started to get crowded around 7 P.M., the staff was running around and the noise level went up. I had a difficult time hearing my friend. I recommend going early or late in the evening.
The food and service were phenomenal! We were there for game Wednesday and the bison special was done extremely well. This was our first dining experience at Chiesa, but it will be one of our ‘go to’ places each time we visit Asheville.
This was a wonderful dining experience. The waiter gave excellent recommendations. The owner checked in with our table of two during our dinner. I would highly recommend it!
Had a wonderful experience here celebrating my wife’s birthday. We would come back again and recommend to friends.
Went for my birthday. Food was great! Waitress was really kind and helpful. For the price and quality, it really is one of the better restaurants in Asheville.
Knowledgeable waiter. Variety of traditional and some innovative entrees and pasta. Particularly enjoyed the trumpet mushroom, vegan entree.
Food was delicious and service was excellent.
Food and service is exceptional. Great place to celebrate specials.
The eggplant parmesan was 10/10 would recommend !
Our friends recommended this restaurant, and we are so glad we took their advice! Delicious homemade pasta in a very cool historic building. Everything we had was delicious, and there was a good wines by the glass list.
Had the chance to visit first time with family and celebrating my 70th birthday. Oh boy, the best of everything, food, service and quiet enough to have a conversation without being exhausted.
Wait service was experienced and were there when needed but not over doing it. The only thing lacking is a bigger selection of craft local beers. We had the coffee martini which were excellent.
Nothing to say except....excellent!!!
The ambience and staff were outstanding. This was our first time dining here so we were very excited. My martini was exactly as I ordered, her Chianti was good as well. Fresh & local bread dipped in artisan EVOO/balsamic was a nice touch over drinks. The PEI mussels were phenomenal! I ordered the homemade veal ravioli, she opted for a short pasta w/ the tomato and coconut rosé sauce. My entree was excellent, portion was reasonable, not large. Overall, fresh and very tasty. My wife’s pasta was literally dusted with sauce. If we weren’t in a slight rush to get to a concert, I’d have asked for a replacement dish (or at least some sauce). It was pretty embarrassing to view from across the table. The overall experience was great, and her dish had potential. But the dry pasta was disappointing. Since I didn’t ask for something else, I’m only deducting a single star. I would still recommend this restaurant, however you can’t serve homemade pasta and attempt to let it shine with little to no sauce. This made me wonder why the rear of the house even let that dish go out. All in all, a good restaurant, I’m hoping this was an outlier and is addressed for the next customer.
Chiesa is one of my favorite restaurants in Asheville- it is a cosy and welcoming setting for really delicious Italian cuisine. I have many food sensitivities and they are always helpful and gracious in making sure I have a fantastic meal. I especially love their seafood dishes and their carbonara. Portions are generous and the wine list has a fun list of affordable, quality wines. Service is attentive without being smothering. Thanks again for another wonderful meal Chiesa team!
The recommendation for wine was great! Scallops were burnt. Sent them back and were still overcooked.
We celebrated my mother’s 94th birthday. The staff and food were wonderful.
Nice dinner for everyone - Chicken Marsala was very good and tasty red sauce and meat balls for everyone else.
It was weird. I imagine maybe another time I go I may have a different experience. The service was good, but they tried to take away the appetizer dish twice before I was done. One guy actually picked it up and I had to yell him back with food in my mouth. The appetizers were pretty good, but the lettuce on the Caesar seemed real dry. The Alfredo was good, but the eggplant parm was really weird. It had some kind of bright seasoning which both of us hated. We did ask them for a different dish which we were embarrassed about. The veal ravioli was pretty good, but not great. Then the waiter accidentally took my knife off the table while I was eating that dish. Which was more funny than anything. For a restaurant in pretty much downtown, I’d have to say it was just ok. Vinnies or strada are better picks for Italian.
Chiesa never disappoints! It was great as always
Chiesa is located in a quiet neighborhood in a lovely old church. the staff was friendly and service was very good. The Duck and Spinach Ravioli dishes we had met our expectations. We will be back!
Outstanding.
Always a dining pleasure, with knowledgeable and amiable staff and excellent food.
As always, our experience at Chiesa was exceptional.
Our server, Lisa Marie, was so informed and led us to making good choices, including the wine.
Our daughter from Atlanta is a real "foodie" and she raved about the evening.
Excellent food and service. Our waiter, Bruce, was fast and efficient. There was a slight delay with a dish we ordered and Bruce offered us a free desert (which was delicious) as a result.
Fantástico Italian cuisine! It’s a rarity to taste the country of Italy in your mouth!
Shrimp Carbonara and Spaghetti with homemade meatball entree’s and Bread Pudding with Ice cream for dessert....Fantastic Dinner! Outstanding service provided by Misty. Highly recommend Chiesa when you are in Asheville.
We have been here several times and each time we feel like family. The food was excellent and the staff and owner gracious hosts. The room is very unique and can be very lively. The menu is small and concise allowing you to spend your time enjoying the experience instead of laboring over a decision. Best Italian in Asheville by far!
My husband and I booked the reservation at the last minute and couldn't have been more pleased. I had the eggplant and he had the pasta with sausage gravy. Both were delicious. The best tomato gravy I've ever had.
We made reservations here for Valentine’s Day and had the best experience! 3 couples all driving in from Atlanta, we had a reservation but part of our group was running an hour late. The owner set us up in their employee lounge, serving us wine and bread and rearranged our reservation once our whole group got here. I’m pretty sure there are very few restaurants who would accommodate their guests like that. On top of that, the wine, food and service was so great! Would highly recommend!
