I can't leave a review because the place has shut down permanently. I only found out on the day of our resrrvation because I wanted to arrange something soecial. I called them on the number provided by Open Table, double checked it against a google search and their website. The number no longer exists, and on google search it states that it's permanently closed. Not cool.
Open Table did not know that this restaurant had closed. My husband and I went into the City for dinner and walked up to the restaurant that was completely empty, with only wires on the floor. We were lucky enough to get a credit from Groupon for our money back. There needs to be a better system of not being able to make a reservation for a restaurant that is not longer open.
This restaurant is closed. It would have been nice if they had notified OpenTable to delete the restaurant from its system before I made a reservation there to celebrate my birthday.

It was my son's birthday. We and our guest arrived to the restaurant at 7pm (as per our reservation) only to find the restaurant closed and a number of other people who made reservations at this place standing in front of the closed door not knowing what to do.
I don't know who's fault it is - Chiaroscuro's rest management who failed to inform OpenTable about closing the business so that OpenTable would stop taking reservations for this restaurant or OpenTable's which did not process business closure request in time - but this was one of the most frustrating experiences I ever had, it ruined the plans for the special occasion dinner and undermined the trust I had towards OpenTable services.
Hard to actually review this restaurant. We were visiting SF and booked on Groupon. Open Table sent an email to confirm our reservation. We were looking forward to a great meal. Got there and the restaurant was CLOSED! Not just closed but permanently closed!! There was no notification anywhere till we walked there and saw the place was partly disassembled.
Safe to say, we won't be going back!
Now, hoping Groupon will refund our money!
They did call and warn us that there were issues with its liquor license. Went anyway and food would be even more wonderful when you can order wine. Food was still delicious.
This was actually our 3rd meal in 4 months. All have been characterized by spotty and generally poor service. The wait staff tries to up sell on wine and includes a mandatory 18-20% tip. Even with few customers the staff gathered in the back at the open kitchen. At times I had to get up and start to pour my/ our own wine. When a course was cleared the plates were scraped and stacked at the table Generally the service was slow as was the order process.
AS regards the food some was quite good but everything was generally served on cold plates and at luke warm temps. On the last visit the rolls were warm but had clearly been rewarmed and were hard. Neither our friends or I/we will return. It maybe that they will not be there in a month or two anyway

Third visit to this restaurant. The appetizers and meat entrees (except for the overcooked lamb chops) were quite good. The most disappointing thing this time was the normally flawless pasta was extremely salty.
I took my family to Chiaroscuro for my younger daughter's birthday dinner. My daughters are (now) 8 and 10, but they are learning to appreciate good food already. They love Italian food, and especially pasta, so I thought this would be a great place for everyone. They had the three pasta "trilogia" course, and loved it. Everyone had a great dinner and a great experience!
Poor service! The server made us felt like second class citizen because we had a Groupon voucher. We were to receive the equivalent of $72 worth of food, but instead we were only credited for $60 worth. Even though we only had 3 people, we were charged a full 18% gratuity based on the $72 face value plus extra food ordered . For the way we were treated we will never be back. Food was good but way overpriced.

The food was excellent. The service a little slow. But, the restaurant is very expensive.
Don't be mislead by the Michelin Guide. They tell you that the meal is prix-fixe, but don't in any way indicate how costly it is. A meal for two with 2 glasses of white wine was $225.00.

Ordered Prix Fixe menu of 3 courses, upgraded to 4 course. We noticed that the servings were smaller than adjacent tables for the same menu items. Our server told us that because we ordered the 4 course Prix Fixe, the servings were smaller, even though we paid an extra fee for the upgrade. It made no sense to us.
Upon arrival we informed staff that we had to leave at a certain time for a theater performance. Due to slow service, we had to box up 1/2 of our entrees and skip dessert.
The server did reduce our bill by one dinner and was very apologetic.
I arrived at the restaurant about 10 minutes early for my reservation, but was not seated for 20 minutes, even though the table I was seated at was free at the time I arrived. The restaurant
kept other people ahead of me in line waiting for their tables too, for no apparent reason.
Service was also very slow for ordering our food. When I asked what the fish of the day was,
I was told it was a black cod that the chef would prepare in a very special way, but they
apparently didn't want to tell me what that special way was. Well, it was indeed a VERY
special way, because when when the food arrived at the table, we were told that trout was
substituted for the black cod! How unbelievably rude! The trout was good but nothing
special. My scallop appetizer was quite good. My wife on the other hand was very unimpressed
with her food. We will not be back.
The food was wonderful. I picked a white wine that was great. A wonderful red wine was picked for us.
Service was ridiculously slow. We arrived to an empty restaurant, tables were set, for our 7 pm restaurant, but had to wait 15 minutes to be seated at our table. We were not alone in having to wait. Further, we did not finish our meal until 10:30. Even assuming a relaxed dining environment, 3 1/2 hours is much too long. Our server was very, very, helpful and nice, but again, 3 1/2 hours is much, much too long.

Some of the poorest service we have experienced in the city. No one was in the restaurant when we arrived and the hostess had us wait 10 minutes for our table. The server was abrupt and did nothing to create a pleasant dining experience. One guest had food allergies and questioned the server about ingredients. When her dish arrived it contained the ingredients she could not eat. Timing between courses was off. Server never inquired about our meal. It even took 10 minutes to settle the bill once my credit card was presented. We will never return.
Good service. Great ambience. Dissapointments: Squid ink pasta looked bare, just a pile of black unoodles, nothing like postings on Yelp. Dessert (crostata de peche) presentation was so messy.
Service seemed a little disorganized at first and took time to get going. Food was good, the ribs very tasty, so was the charcuterie, and the burrata antipasti dishes.
Portions are adequate, and don't expect to take home.
We had a great evening of food, service, wine and display of dinning.

I think I would have enjoyed this dining experience a bit more if our server had been more available. It appeared as though everyone had a particular job (keep the water filled or bring the bread or be the server) and that there was only one server?? If the sommelier hadn't heard my husband and me talking about how cold our main course was, I'm not sure what would have happened as we couldn't catch our server. Of course by the time my beef was warm, it was no longer medium rare. I'd have to say that for the price (on the high side), they have to do better. Everyone was very nice and the food tasted good, but I prefer it warm. I've had better experiences here.
This place was a disappointment, especially considering its Zagat rating. First of all, they provided us an appetizer with different ingredients than on the menu but never told us before servicing it. Second, the service was not good. Third, they did not offer us a dessert until we asked about one and then they told us they only had one to offer. Food was good although I wish we had gotten the appetizer we had ordered, and not the one they provided.
We purchased a travelzoo deal and overall, I was thinking it was a good deal until they charge you a 10% "travelzoo" tax. This is on top of the regular SF tax! This wasn't disclosed in the travelzoo deal nor by the restaurant. Automatic "18%" gratuity is charged for dinner. Diners: you've been warned.

We had a wonderful lunch at Chiaroscuro. They make all their own pasta and it is delicious. The spinach salad was fabulous- not sure what kind of bleu cheese they used but it was divine. The staff were very pleasant and we would definitely go back again. It's a place where you don't feel you need to rush. A lovely afternoon.
Awesome scallop appetizers, loved the seabass and the trilogia pasta was amazing. Really enjoyed the evening.
What a lovely dining experience! Each of the courses featured diverse ingredients, which blended together superbly. The meal was delicious and the staff warm and friendly. Since we dined early, the restaurant quiet enough that we could enjoy the Brazilian music being played.
Great authentic Italian food. Roman focus.
The Triglio pasta dish is a favorite. Moderate portions. Good wines. Nice open kitchen. Chef Alessandro is a master.

I have been to Chiaroscuro a few times and, as always, the food was outstanding. I do give 4 stars to service though because the waiter was a bit pushy on selling us more stuff; I think because we used a TravelZoo coupon this time...
It's my second time there. Food is not as good as the first and the server kept forgetting the names of certain food but that doesn't really bother me. Ample carpark lots just a block away and if you're lucky just outside the restaurant.
The server could not get our order done correctly. He asked us three times what we were ordering and still messed it up
We've been here four years in a row. A must visit for us on every visit to SF. Love the food.
This was a very disappointing experience for our family. I was there for my daughter's 11th birthday and I thought this would be a special meal. The food was too salty and not tasty at all. The food overall lacked imagination and the pastas(Trilogy) was truly awful with the cacio pepe being the worst of the 3. Not going back to this place any time soon.
