Char Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Char is always dependable and consistent. The food and service are always great there, and I I've never had a bad meal there or bad service! The ambiance is cozy with the fireplace, and the noise level is perfect... not too loud, but loud enough to know that everyone is enjoying themselves.
I have been to Char a few times and it’s always a great experience. The food was excellent ( I had a delicious swordfish ) the service attentive and nice. The decor is comfortable and inviting. I was surprised it wasn’t more crowded on a Friday night. I think overalll it’s superior to a lot of other places in the neighborhood and the prices are reasonable. I will be back.
I would want to go back again when it's NOT Restaurant week. It was noisy due to being crowded with a few larger tables filled and loud. The service was very good, very attentive and I had seafood paella which was tasty but unfortunately the shrimp was overcooked and a little rubbery.
So would like to give it another chance on a "regular nite" and see how they do
This was a fantastic find! The service was great. The food came out quickly but it wasn’t so quick that you felt you were being rushed out rather you felt that the meal was paced as it should be. Our waiter Cesar was very attentive, he was great.
We had the roasted Brussels sprouts and the Char grilled octopus as starters. The Brussels sprouts has a nice honey taste but it wasn’t overwhelming. The octopus was perfection the farro was cooked perfectly and the dressing complimented it very well.
We got the zucchini “linguine” and the French onion burger. The zucchini was great, it was a good sauce with a nice, light ricotta on top. The burger was cooked perfectly and the onions were delicious.
For dessert we got the poached apple and the cookie and cream dessert. While the apple was fine, we thought it would have been even better if it were served warm. The ice cream on the skillet cookie was delicious and it is definitely a dessert you can share.
Definitely on my list of restaurants to visit when I️ come back home.
Food was decent - not great. First we were offered a seat almost on top of the hostess stand. Then the manager discouraged us from ordering desert and offered a drink at the bar to get up. We had been seated for about 75 minutes. Did not leave with a great impression.
The food and service were excellent. There were many gluten free options so my wife was able to enjoy her birthday dinner without getting ill. We had some great apps and steaks (very tender) and the wait staff was very friendly. The restaurant is beautiful and the experience overall was great. There were even a bunch of gluten free desserts including a warm chocolate cake.
While the food was good, it was certainly not great & it was overpriced. The least impressive aspect of the evening was our waiter. He seemed ‘put out’ by our questions, was not attentive & was even dismissive when we requested he ask the kitchen about peanut products in the dessert as my niece has a severe peanut allergy. The bus staff was more attentive than the waiter but even they started ignoring water refills by the end of our dinner. With all the choices available in Greenwich, you would be much better off elsewhere.
We arrived for a 7pm dinner (three of us) and were greeted by Spencer.
I'll be brief: Spencer was the highlight of the night; he was courteous, professional, and upbeat - and none of that "I don't want to be a server" fakery that you can see through. He was really awesome.
The food, though, was not good. From the confused menu (sea scallops and burgers, really?) to my bloody burger (I asked for medium rare which they almost nailed, but they didn't let it rest, so I got a plate of blood and grease after the first bite).
Lola nice inside and free parking on the side.
I won't return or recommend to anyone because of the food though.
I'd rather have had a FedEx sandwich from The Firehouse Deli down the street.
We love Char. The food is very good , service excellent and has a good vibe. My major disappointment was the absence of the roast duck. It is the sin qua non of my visit. Not sure why deleted;; maybe a winter dish? Would be dismissive if I did not mention we arrived early but were seated immediately despite the diner traffic. Thank You.
We liked the "woodsy" casual ambience, and the server was excellent -- welcoming and professional. This was our first time at this restaurant, so it is hard to say all of the occasions for which we might recommend it. We both love duck, and don't have it often, so ordered it at this restaurant. The hoisin seasoning was tasty, but some of the duck was tough, and that was a disappointment.
We would give Char another try and order something else from the menu.
I had lunch with a friend at Char on a Monday. It was my first time in the dining room. The restaurant occupies an entire house. The dining room is above ground - accessible from the street or from the parking side - It's well situated, with large tables and comfortable chairs with a fireplace in the middle of the room. For lunch a portion of the room with views on the water (not remarkable in Port Chester) was closed, but there was plenty of natural light coming in through the windows.
Lunch has a 2-course special Mon-Fri and it's a great deal in my opinion. I had a fresh crispy pear walnut salad as a first course and chicken payard over sautéed spinach as a second course. You can also choose a desert instead, if you crave something indulgent. There is also a la carte menu and my friend ordered a blt with fries. It looked very good.
Delicious food, impeccable service, quiet for conversations, nice background music (I'm a fan of classic jazz), lots of room to sit and be comfortable.
It should be wildly popular - and it will be one of my favorite spots - but this Monday it was just an intimate quiet lunch for the lucky two guests.
The octopus, buratta, dumplings and French toast bread pudding were all very good!!!!. My mains course which was a special....rib eye with bacon mash potatoes and a red wine reduction sauce were cooked exactly to my liking. The service was friendly! Would recommend to anyone.
We've been to Char with several friends and have always had a great time. The menu offers a delicious array of main courses with something for everyone. Some of my favorites are the shaved Brussels salad, duck and all of the fish dishes. Service is consistently attentive. Wine list reflects good price points. Highly recommend this great gem!
found Char after planning a day in Greenwich, CT and looking for a healthy place to eat. we had 2 apps which were great. the veal was amazing! I had the duck, and well, it tasted like duck, but the fixings were great. Was good meal and the service was impeccable.
Love that the menu/specials change - so always something new. Appetizers were flavorful, with the crispy shrimp the favorite and Kale &Brussel sprout salad coming in second. The cod dish was fresh and flavorful, and the jumbalaya was spicy without being too hot to eat. Would definitely go again!
