Never a disappointment. By far, my favorite restaurant on the shoreline!
Great service, good food, a few too many French fries!!
Food was great! Tremendous presentation.
Service was Flawless. Was a tid bit noisy but not unbearable.
great place to stop off from I-95 on the way from NYC to Providence or Boston. Great menu options with great food and chef knows his stuff.
I made a reservation online. However on Thursday evening at 5:30 there was plenty of seating. Upon entry the bar was full and lively, seemed like a local crowd. The dining room was quieter and I thought the decor was inherited from a previous iteration. The name doesn't fit the decor I guess I expected cafe intimacy.
The waiter was attentive, rattled off the specials and fetched the cocktails while we perused the menu. The menu was diverse and maybe a little too too much. I tend to prefer simpler fare, not to say that the selections were not spectacular, perhaps they were.
The drinks arrived on time and the waiter took our order. I chose the steak and frites with a salad to start, not to my surprise my date ordered the same. The salads came halfway through the cocktails, they were fresh adequately dressed and delicious. Dinner was timed perfectly, salad plates cleared, and the main course joined us at the table. At first I remarked that the steaks were diminutive by steakhouse standards, and lots and lots of frites with some greens for color. The steaks were done perfectly with an herbed butter atop. Just the right amount of char and medium rare as ordered. I think the steak portions appropriate simply because they were so well prepared. I would have preferred fewer fries and a vegetable. Brussel sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, rabe, are all green for color and would rounded off the course nicely.
So I guess I might question if the presentation of a veg with so many french fries. Perhaps thinner actual frites would go better on the plate with a vegetable, or I suppose mashed. The fries and oiled greens were not to the standard of the steak. Tut, tut you say! I will return for another round, however I am not rushing back. And perhaps a seat at the bar would be a little more cafe for me.
This was our first visit. We were warmly welcomed. Had a big table in a corner with plenty of room. Our server was friendly and efficient. Great selection of appetizers and entrees. The meals were delicious and plentiful. Prices were quite fair for the quality and abundance of the portions. We plan to return, soon.
Hadn't been to Cafe Routier in a couple of years and have been kicking myself we didn't get back sooner -- excellent all-around. Terrific French menu, with a seasonal take on other menu concepts. This month, it's Portuguese, and it was all wonderful. Really, go!
We always have a fantastic meal at Cafe Routier. Staff knows the menu well, treats diners with respect and with friendliness. Can't wait to go back!
We went on New Years Eve and had a wonderful time! As expected it was very busy but with our reservation we waited only a few minutes. The service was great and the food exceptional! Would definitely go back! Highly recommend.
We enjoyed our dinner experience tremendously. We will visit again.
Always a great meal with great service!
Excellent cuisine and just a warm, intimate, friendly atmosphere.
Our family goes to Routier approx three times per year. We have never been disappointed. The food and service are excellent and commensurate with menu pricing. Wonderful place.
One of the best, or the best restaurant on the shoreline. I have never been disappointed, from drinks to apps, dinner, dessert. Every course is exceptional every time!
Amazing food and service like always! Never disappointed, we continue to come back and it’s at the top of our 5 star list for the shoreline.
Been here many many times, always good. This was a weeknight dinner, place was nicely quiet, and we enjoyed the Portuguese cod and beef dishes.
CR accepted a late (8:30 on a Tuesday) reservation for a big party and we were so grateful. The service was great, the food was delicious...as always.
This is our go-to when friends/work colleagues are up from NYC and never disappoints!
Cafe Routier has three types of menus; Regional, Seasonal and a Special Menu and they are all exceptional dishes. I had fried oysters and for the main, Pan-roasted duck, all of which was delicious. The main dining room is quiet and elegant. The service was excellent and our waiter very attentive and knowledgeable. There is also a dining bar in an adjacent room which seems like a very lively scene. We will certainly return for dinner again.
Restaurant did a great job accommodating our large party the day after a holiday. It was intimate, the food was interesting and well presented, and the servers very pleasant.
This was our first visit to Cafe Routier. We were going to a show at the Kate and found this restaurant to be highly rated nearby. When we arrived, the place was packed - and I can see why. It was excellent! The three distinct menu groupings were interesting and what we ended up ordering was delicious. The duck breast in particular was outstanding! I'd definitely go back.
As usual a most pleasant dining experience. We have friends requiring a gluten free diet and our waiter was most helpful with selections. We usually have a bottle of wine but I was surprised by the excellent choices by the glass. Always a good event out!
We are never disappointed with an evening here. They smartly maintain a menu of regular items that are just wonderful and then add both a seasonal menu and an ever-changing regional menu too.
Do nor miss an opportunity for an evening here !!
The evening was flawless. They had the table I requested , the server was helpful as well as knowledgeable about the menu and available without hovering as were the bus people. The food was expertly prepared and delicious. An all round wonderful experience.
We visited Cafe Routier because we had a gift certificate and were so pleased to have the incentive to try this restaurant. Everything was wonderful. We had a salad, main course, and dessert... all were excellent. The service was great and very professional (thank you, John). We visited because of the gift certificate but will definitely visit on our own again. Would highly recommend.
Wonderful as always. The Jen of the shoreline.
The Portuguese menu was disappointing. Cod was fairly tasteless and veggies and potatoes were too oily. Food lacked garlic and fresh herbs
The food and wine were phenomenal. My boyfriend never orders a second cocktail, but the Flirtini turned him around. Waitstaff was great.
Cafe Routier knows how to prepare duck Pate and their duck breast entree was to die for!
Cafe Routier is by far my favorite restaurant in Southeastern Connecticut! I can't get there as often as I would like, but when in the area I make it a priority to dine there. The food is always outstanding and the Ruby Red Cosmos are excellent. Make sure you put it on your short list if you are in the Westbrook area!!
Always great place to go. Would have been five stars if filet mignon was not over cooked.
Great meal, good service, table for 4 in back dining room. Room was quite loud as we were seated next to a party of 6 ladies. Wonder if some sound insulation could have helped as ceiling may have made the voices louder. Thank you
We go there about 2-3 times a year (45 minute drive) and have been going for years. Always enjoy the atmosphere, food and service. It has become more “casual” over the years and although we prefer the dining room, they now have a very popular pub and pub menu (sign of the times). This visit we tried the pork belly app and it was outstanding. Dinners were good but not as tasty as that app. Service, as usual, was attentive and not rushed. Another good experience, look forward to our next visit.
Food always excellent. Good service.
Food is consistently inventive and outstanding. Grilled romaine was a hit - whole fish is always great. Best to sit in the bar - much better energy and ambiance then dining room. Service was OK, waitress seemed a bit indifferent and unenthusiastic - but executed the basics well. Might be the best overall restaurant within miles.
Never falters and continually refreshes decor and food options. A sure fire choice
Great food as usual. Service was better this visit than previous, but could still be better.
Nice restaurant and wait staff.
We started with the fries for the appetizer. They were very good with the accompanying sauce, but a little too salty for our taste. For the meal, I got the surf and turf and my gf got the steak and risotto. Steak was perfectly cooked and butter soft. There were a few chunks of cold lobster atop a corn muffin filled with corn kernels and a big portion of broccoli rabe on the plate. I'm OK with lobster cold or hot and rabe is OK, just not my favorite in that quantity but I understand that they needed to fill the plate with some color. Risotto was done well also. Bartender says they rotate their menu every 3 months.
They have a good selection of beer and my gf said the wine was the best she'd ever had.
I won't discuss price because this is a higher-end restaurant and you have to expect to pay more. Overall, I would recommend this restaurant as we had a pleasant experience.
My go to local place for a more upscale dinner. Food is always delicious!
Cafe Routier has never missed a beat! This is one of the most consistently delicious restaurants in our area. We especially liked the lobster wraps and the chicken. But everything is delicious, plus the staff is friendly and informative. Go!
Usually I give Cafe 4975834 a top rating. Although the main courses--the Branzino and the Filet were perfec- the duck pate was rather bland. And when I are some of the leftover late at home the next day, it had turned sour. But Routier is still a special spot.
