Veal was a little over cooked but everyone elses meals were great!
Hadn't been to Cafe Routier in a while but decided to celebrate my wife's birthday there and we're glad we did. We started by splitting an order of fried oysters -- always good here and they didn't disappoint. My wife had wild boar bolognese which was as good as comfort food gets. I went with the espresso glazed duck (breast and confit leg), which was cooked to a perfect medium rare....so tender I barely needed a knife. We finished with a shared chocolate / caramel turtle cake dessert that was delicious. Cafe Routier is also a wine lover's paradise with an extensive list that includes many very reasonably priced bottles. Our meal was perfectly paced with no rush between courses, and our friendly waiter showed just the right level of attentiveness without being intrusive. All in all, a wonderful meal! We won't take so long to go back this time.
As always Cafe Routier was an absolute pleasure. This is one of our favorite places to go. Their Hangar Steak, Lobster Mac n Cheese and grilled brussels sprouts are fabulous. We also enjoyed the winter salad. We've been coming to Cafe Routier for years and have always had great service and great food. Strongly recommend them!
Meredith was upbeat and FANTASTIC!!
I was looking for a restaurant that would allow 8 guests to visit and chat without too much background noise. Café Routier provided that atmosphere. The service was attentive and the food was very good. There was enough variety on the menu to please everyone in our group and they also featured interesting specials. I will definitely return to Café Routier!
Our food was very good and we have always had good experiences at this restaurant. The one comment I will make is that both my wife and I noticed that things were quite salty. We both found ourselves drinking a lot of water when we got home. Otherwise, our evening was very nice. The mussels are about as good as any we have had elsewhere, including those served in Nova Scotia and in Belgium!
The restaurant design is understated elegance and set up for a good degree of intimacy despite the large space. The food was excellent as was the service.
This was our third visit after having a wonderful meal in September for our anniversary and in February for my birthday. We came for my husband's birthday. Service was great (Kirstin), and food was excellent. We were glad to see the winter menu again, so I chose the Wild Boar Bolognese which he had last month. The roasted oyster appetizer was outstanding, and my husband enjoyed his onion soup gratinee along with his lamb special. Kirstin and the other waiterstaff were attentive. We each ordered dessert, both of which were excellent -- my lemon tarte and his pineut cake. The lighting at our table was just right, and it wasn't too noisy. We plan on returning again and again.
Interesting menu selections. Delicious food attractively presented.
My only complaint is the noise level in the back dining room.
Food was great, Maybe can use a little updating. Wall paper falling off the walls in areas but overall a nice place to enjoy great food!
Delicious meal shared with good friends to celebrate my wife’s birthday.
Best place in CT.
We found the food, although tasty,to be extremely salty. Two of us ordered the onion soup which was almost too salty to eat. We have eaten here before and really enjoyed it, but this past time it was so-so. That is, except for the French fries that never disappoint.
Everything was good as usual...never a disappointment
Excellent and varied menu. Never disappoints. Great servers too!
We have frequented the restaurant many times We love the seasonal menus and ever changing cuisine It’s a first class place that we would highly recommend
Delicious food, great atmosphere, friendly but unobtrusive service. I had the duck breast which was perfectly prepared. Don’t forget to try the fries!
We were seated right away at a very comfortable table in the back. The bar area and front of the restaurant was busy with wonderful energy when we arrived at 8 pm. At first I was disappointed to be in the rear of the restaurant, but it was actually nice to be able to talk easily. The wait staff was wonderful snd helpful. The most challenging aspect was choosing between many mouthwatering dishes.
My food (the steak with lobster mac and cheese was delicious. My cousin had the halibut special, and it was indeed special.
table was ready on time. sever was very good. food was excellent and more than enough. We would go back again.
A wonderful evening to celebrate our anniversary, superior service, understated ambience, and excellent food chosen from a tantalizingly diverse menu. Superb in every way!
Excellent through and through. I wish I had kept the receipt so I could remember our server, but he was the consummate professional, neither stiff nor too loose, attentive but not hovering, and he knew everything there is to know about the food, wine and pairings. We were there the time of this review and I expressed my appreciation as we left the restaurant. We all had the roasted duck with a bottle of decanted Barolo which should identify the waiter if he reads this (2/15/19). Well done sir! The duck was perfection as were the roasted oysters. The gnocchi carbonara was ok.
This restaurant is pricey, but the food is excellent! It was quiet with the lights dimmed. A good choice for a Valentine's Day dinner!
Always amzing food and service!!!!! Our favorite place to go!
Great restaurant close to home; we will certainly go again! The wine list was good but I expected a little better selections and since the dinner menu (we sat in the restaurant, not the bar) is curated pairing suggestions would have been a very nice touch. Nonetheless, great food and we will be back! The hanger steak was amazing!!
We return to Cafe Routier when we want a fine dining experience with interesting menu. This visit met our expectations. Service was wonderful and we enjoyed the food, especially he special. No doubt the chef is very talented.. we will return often with friends for a night of fine dining.
The wild boar papardelle was disappointing. It was bland and not tasty, and I have come to expect better of Routier. The onion soup was sweet and not truly onion soup. There were no onions in the broth. The only onions were crisped and placed atop the cheese.
Routier is always very consistent...food was great and so was our waitress.
Everything was well done and yes, I'd recommend it and have many times already to others.
Certain items are overpriced for what they are, but for most part it is fair.
Very good dinner and thank you
Never a disappointment. By far, my favorite restaurant on the shoreline!
Great lighting and attractive seating arrangements...I liked the menu and was happy with my meal choice
Great service, good food, a few too many French fries!!
Food was great! Tremendous presentation.
Service was Flawless. Was a tid bit noisy but not unbearable.
great place to stop off from I-95 on the way from NYC to Providence or Boston. Great menu options with great food and chef knows his stuff.
I made a reservation online. However on Thursday evening at 5:30 there was plenty of seating. Upon entry the bar was full and lively, seemed like a local crowd. The dining room was quieter and I thought the decor was inherited from a previous iteration. The name doesn't fit the decor I guess I expected cafe intimacy.
The waiter was attentive, rattled off the specials and fetched the cocktails while we perused the menu. The menu was diverse and maybe a little too too much. I tend to prefer simpler fare, not to say that the selections were not spectacular, perhaps they were.
The drinks arrived on time and the waiter took our order. I chose the steak and frites with a salad to start, not to my surprise my date ordered the same. The salads came halfway through the cocktails, they were fresh adequately dressed and delicious. Dinner was timed perfectly, salad plates cleared, and the main course joined us at the table. At first I remarked that the steaks were diminutive by steakhouse standards, and lots and lots of frites with some greens for color. The steaks were done perfectly with an herbed butter atop. Just the right amount of char and medium rare as ordered. I think the steak portions appropriate simply because they were so well prepared. I would have preferred fewer fries and a vegetable. Brussel sprouts, broccoli, asparagus, rabe, are all green for color and would rounded off the course nicely.
So I guess I might question if the presentation of a veg with so many french fries. Perhaps thinner actual frites would go better on the plate with a vegetable, or I suppose mashed. The fries and oiled greens were not to the standard of the steak. Tut, tut you say! I will return for another round, however I am not rushing back. And perhaps a seat at the bar would be a little more cafe for me.
This was our first visit. We were warmly welcomed. Had a big table in a corner with plenty of room. Our server was friendly and efficient. Great selection of appetizers and entrees. The meals were delicious and plentiful. Prices were quite fair for the quality and abundance of the portions. We plan to return, soon.
Hadn't been to Cafe Routier in a couple of years and have been kicking myself we didn't get back sooner -- excellent all-around. Terrific French menu, with a seasonal take on other menu concepts. This month, it's Portuguese, and it was all wonderful. Really, go!
We always have a fantastic meal at Cafe Routier. Staff knows the menu well, treats diners with respect and with friendliness. Can't wait to go back!
We went on New Years Eve and had a wonderful time! As expected it was very busy but with our reservation we waited only a few minutes. The service was great and the food exceptional! Would definitely go back! Highly recommend.
We enjoyed our dinner experience tremendously. We will visit again.
Always a great meal with great service!
