Cafe Navarre Ratings and Reviews
Waiter was rude and inattentive. It went as far as asking for the drink order and abruptly walking away before anything could be said, and coming back minutes later. Soup was amazing, however steak had to be sent back as it was not cooked to order. Date night was truly ruined due to this experience. Waste of money.
Food and service was fantastic! I had made reservations and we were seated right by the kitchen which was not very classy as I had higher expectations for this type of restaurant as the divider did not drown out the noise. Definitely would go back but would request a better seating area.
Our server was unfriendly and detached until or meal was almost over and then he started joking with us probably to get a good tip. I had the duck a l'orange. I'm not well versed in duck dishes but wanted to try it. The server asked if I was all right with it being medium. Not knowing that you could cook duck differently I said yes. The breast was too raw inside to my liking. I had them take the breast pieces back and cook longer. I felt the wing and the leg were done to my liking. The breasts came back cooked more so I could eat it but it tasted very salty now. I also never tasted any orange flavor in the sauce. I would come back and try again though. My husband's chilian sea bass was good.
Went to Café Navarre for dinner the Friday of Junior Parents Weekend at Notre Dame. We started with 6 people, and had a late addition. They accommodated our change graciously and without any issues. We had a fantastic table upstairs with great views outside and of the lower floor of the restaurant. The servers were wonderful, and food and beverages were delivered at a great pace. Everyone raved about their meals--perfectly prepared! We ranged from vegetarian through pasta and seafood to meat and potatoes, and everything was expertly done. Great beer and wine selection, and the cocktails were also delicious. It was our 2nd time there, we'll definitely be back.
First time at venue. Reminds me of Berghoff downtown Chicago with its dark wood decor and the waiters attire. Food was good especially pumpkin soup. Brought wife for Valentine Day outing. Expensive to hit often but nice for special occasions. Waiter was very attentive and had good stories.
With the selection we made, we were allowed 1 appetizer, 1 entree and 1 dessert or, 2 appetizers and 1 entree.
We chose 2 appetizers and 1 entree but only got 1 appetizer. All the waitress could offer to fix the problem was carryout appetizer or dessert. Since we were on our way to see a music act, we were unable to take the offer which means we got stuck for full price.
Food was excellent, our waitress was excellent except for the dinner snafu and the place is a nice place to have dinner. Would have rated much higher had it not been for the screw up on our orders.
We had the best service that we have gotten in a LONG time! Our server's name was Ficret and he made our dinning experience an absolute pleasure! Not to mention all of his co-workers seems to pitch in and nothing that was ready to be discarded stayed on our table for more than a few second.
The food was an absolute delight as well. My fiancé's steak was perfectly cooked, my osso bucco fell right off the bone, and the chocolate hazelnut cake I got was to die for!
Overall, one of the best dinning experiences I've had in a long time!
Dinner before theater tonight which looked forward to the new menu at Navarre. We were quickly sat, then waited for a while before being greeted by our server. Ordered wine since we had plenty of time to pick a suitable bottle - Navarre has a good wine list. Tried the new grilled octopus and squid appetizer and scallops - both tasted very good but the fish was over cooked in both dishes. Had to ask for bread after receiving the appetizers - this is normally delivered right after greeting and water is delivered to the table. I tried the lobster pot pie for dinner which ok, did not have a creamy sauce and small lobster tail was crammed into the cup instead of being cut into pieces and cooked with veggies and sauce - this made it awkward to cut and eat (crust was tasty if not a bit over cooked). I do not recommend this dish as overpriced and did not meet my taste expectations. My wife had the shrimp arriabbiata pasta which she described as excellent with exception the shrimp was over cooked like our appetizers. Overcooked fish was a shock for us at Cafe Navarre as they have always had perfect fish dishes. Server was not attentive, we had to ask for everything, including a new glass of water as after drinking 1/3 of my initial glass I noted the glass was very dirty with caked on food or drink (not a pleasant experience); server simply took the glass and returned with a new one, no apology or explanation which is unacceptable for a restaurant of this caliber (I can understand this happening, but expect an apology an a minimum). We love Cafe Navarre, but we were a bit disappointed with this experience.
We had dinner at Cafe Navarre on New Year’s Eve to celebrate our anniversary, which I shared on the Open Table reservation form. No mention of it at all by the hostess or wait staff, and we were rushed through our dinner. The entrees were brought out while we still had our salad and soup. The waitress said something about needing to get our entrees in before a large party that came in after us, but they hadn’t even ordered yet. The food was quite good, but our overall experience was disappointing.
The food was great. Wine and drink variety was acceptable, maybe a few more high quality French wines and cognac. The real issue is price., everything is a la carte. Paying upper $30-$40 for an entree that does not include salad or vegetable selection in this area is pricy. I paid $148.00 for a two person meal. That is what I would expect to pay in a top Chicago restaurant, not South Bend, In.
Great place. Been there several times. First time upstsirs. We had a party of seven and we sat upstairs in a semi-private room. It did not have quite as happening vibe as the main level but was very nice. Service was very attentive. Wine wad fairly priced. Food was great. Best place in South Bend for fine dining.
I'm worried that the ownership is getting comfortable with their place in town as the quality continues to decrease year after year. My most recent visit the lettuce was wilted but served anyways and two of our party had their steaks over done while one had it underdone. Their dessert options are also no longer special or unique (bring back the flourless chocolate cake!). The whole thing is becoming rote and stale and the food quality over my last several visits has been diminished. Bring back the upscale dining and feel.
