The Blue Nile is a family run Eritrean - Italian café and restaurant, harking back to Eritrea’s colonial history.
Our menu has a mix of Italian and Eritrean classics, from Italian coffees, pasta and ice-creams to Eritrean ‘kemem’ tea (tea infused with cloves, cinnamon, star anise and ginger), warm ‘ful’, meat stews infused with cardamom and cinnamon and cooked in ‘tesmi’, a warm and comforting spiced butter and our delicious home made sweet cardamom flavoured bread called ‘himbasha’.
A lot of our recipes are gluten .

Small, specialist menu. Be prepared to dine with only a few serving spoons and no other utensils. A rare experience, a glimpse from Woolwich into another world. Genial waiting staff, willing to advise and instruct.
Lovely authentic food. Friendly atmosphere, fantastic home made wine
Very delicious and lovely decoration. Loads of food but not too heavy
My friends had wanted to go for ages and loved it.
Another thoroughly enjoyable meal and such amazing value for money.
The lentils and the tomato dish were the highlights.
An amazing secret jewel in Woolwich.
Fantastic food. Great service. Warm, cozy and friendly
Amazing value for money. We loved it!
Very good service, delicious food and lovely people
Lovely unique food in a homely unpretentious family environment. Great value for money too.
Great customer service, very tasty food the atmosphere pf the place goves you the feeling of the Eritrean culture.
The food was ok but nothing like what I expect from Ethiopian food. All dishes were watered down in terms of salt and spice to suit the western palette resulting in dishes that did not taste anything like the originals. The prices were also steep for the portions - we were two adults and a child and ordered the sharing menu, the owner asked if it was three and I said yes. Mistake. We got the same portions as would come for two people but were charged for three. I knew about the portions as a couple next two us ordered the same and got the same portions. Disappointed.
The ambiance is also not traditional Eritrean/Ethiopian. The place was a sausage shop in the past and the owners decided to keep the same decor! Except for a map of Eritrea, nothing related to the culture. The sign in front of the shop also needs an upgrade IMHO.
But on the up note, the owner, Hapte, was a gentleman and was quite nice, chatting with us about Eritrean history etc.
Amazing Eritrean restaurant
Friendly, helpful service
Beautifully cooked menu
Wife had worked in Horn of Africa in 80s & was almost swooning as the smells & tastes came back
Can't wait to visit again with rest of family
First time at Blue Nile, food was fantastic & very authentic. Highly recommend... hidden gem in Woolwich.
We had a wonderful time at the blue Nile, we always do, great food, great service, so warm & friendly, also great because a lot of the food options are vegan, as well as meat. I highly reccomend!
It's our fav restaurant in London. The family who run it are incredibly nice and warm people, the food is just great - if you're into "unconventional" stuff, that is - and it's surprisingly cheap. Their wine list is quite short with only a few options, but they're all quality Italian wines from independent farmers and they're all great. The Injera they make is just unique and their meat & veg stews are something else. This is so enthusiastic that some people might think it's a fake comment, but honestly, it's in my top-5 worldwide list.
A great lrestaurant, lively laid back atmosphere. Exceeded our expectations - the food was interesting, freshly cooked and delicious. Service great and owners warm and friendly without being intrusive. Would definitely go again - even though it’s a distance from where we live! Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable Sunday lunch.
First visit to Blue Nile. Thoroughly enjoyed the delicious food & the wine. The various dishes were explained to us by the lovely man who seved us. Also we were told about the history of the cafe before Blue Nile. I would recommend to friends & will be back
Delicious food, and very reasonable prices. We'll definitely be back!
Our favourite restaurant. The food is delicious. It's always a real pleasure. Thank you for having us.
Delicious food and a warm welcome. You feel as if you’re welcomed into someone’s home but with a professional service.
Happened on this by chance while searching for something different in SE London. Excellent entertaining veggetarian meal. Interesting experience eating without cutlery. Great service with a good sense of humour. Endless supplies of bread. Excellent Amber beer. Defintely will be visiting again.
My wife and I were staying locally, so we like to find interesting places to eat that are not really mainstream.
Great value & flavour, we had the veg/meat sampler for two & a drink each for under £30.
Blue Nile has maintained it's absolutely top-notch standards I am pleased to see. The best value for money you can imagine, for the loveliest food. A warm welcome too, from the kindest restaurant owner in London (or anywhere!!).
Delicious meal which left me with a warm glow! Wonderfully spices. Wish I knew how to cook these dishes.
Never had an Eritrean meal so this was the chance its a limited menu two spicy meat dishes and three vegetable dishes accompanied by flatbread type of plate cover for the standard meal, limited wine and beer choice but nice, its set in an old sausage shop so full of white tiles and the meat rack up at high level.
Went with friends the food is cheap but you can rack up the price with wine and beer etc a good night but would have to live nearer it to go again its very popular and tables are limited overall a memorable experience
Such a joy to be sharing this lovely food again. Totally recommended for dining with friends and family. If you haven't experienced Eritrean food before the staff will happily to guide you through the choices. An added bonus if you are gluten intolerant Injera is no problem. They also do takeaway. Oh and the Tiramisu is just gorgeous.
I've been to Blue Nile several times since moving into Woolwich and have enjoyed it on each occasion. Great food served with a friendly family vibe.
I love Blue Nile, the food is delicious, the service is always really chilled and friendly, and is generally a great place for a relaxed dining experience.
Beautiful food and wonderful service as always. This place is so special.
Delicious food and great experience, it is a unique, and cultural experience not using utensils with a comfortable and lovely atmosphere. Service was great and the owner is very friendly. Highly recommend and would go back again.
Tasty, authentic, interesting food and a welcoming owner who really looks after you.
Blue Nile is my boyfriend's favourite restaurant in Woolwich. We booked a table for his birthday dinner and the owner surprised us with a cake. It a lovely no fuss place to eat as a couple or with friends.
Favourite restaurant in London. It's a little out of the way (being in Woolwich) but is well worth travelling for. The value is incredible, the spicy meat stews and injera are unbeatable, especially with the spiced tea, and the tiramisu is one of the best.
We were planning to take my husband's aunt out to this castle in the Shooter’s hill for some mulled cider, stunning views and.. Christmas carols, followed by the dinner in the neighbourhood for her birthday. But, of course, castle visit had to get cancelled (snow in London is super powerful!!) and when we thought that this day is just not going to turn out well.. we went out for that pre-planned dinner. To the Blue Nile. Where we met Shewa who we connected with over Polaroid photos and her life story as a refugee back then and the owner of Blue Nile now. We had tears in our eyes while listening to Shewa’s story, then were laughing out loud when being introduced to Eritrean alphabet and true happiness visited us when we were singing happy birthday to our beloved one - Indira Fay! Us 3 and Shewa. Shewa, thank you for making our day and evening - you a truly an inspiration and we are definitely coming back!!! Absolutely gorgeous interior, amazing food and the owner.. simply a legend!!!
Lovely food, lovely environment, lovely host, thank you!
My second time at the Blue Nile and another great meal. I suspect that I'll be coming back time and time again. As a bonus we were offered a doggy bag so I had a lovely meal two nights running.
Really delicious vegetarian option, attentive service,
Refined place! The besr restaurant in woolwich for sure
Food was amazing
Really good experience. Great value and so authentic. You can forget you're in London. The lady who runs the place is fantastic.
Awesome food with yummy flavours, friendly service and great value for money.
Astonishingly wonderful place!!
The Blue Nile has simply wonderful food: very authentic, healthy and tasty. The owner goes to considerable trouble to import Eritrean flour for the Injera and you can really tell.
The service and welcome is without equal anywhere, and the whole package is wrapped up in a superb value for money package.
I can’t recommed this highly enough.
