About
Disappointing fourth visit after two outstanding meals and one great one over the past five years. Servers were quick to tell us this was their last day before a month off for refurbishments, several items were not available and three promised items (colouring materials for a child, an answer to whether the Dragon Wagon would be open during the month off and a question about a potential discount that needed the manager to respond) were never followed up. Food was super slow and okay tasting but not great (as on prior visits). All in all, disappointing, as we'd been looking forward to this for a long time. Sorry, I cannot recommend any more...and we used to do so to everyone we knew coming to the big island
Loved this place. The food was spectacular...so was the service. We had the seafood special, the fries. I had the salad...loved the presentation in a flower pot; you cut your own greens. My husband had the summer rolls. Honestly - I doubt there's anything meh on the menu.
Live music tops off this special place. If I lived on the Big I I'd be a regular.
Excellent food and entertainment with even better service.
We read reviews and we looked at the website and we asked around and on no level did it disappoint us. Our reservation was handled as a "10;" we had the best table in the place.
The hostesses were great, the bartender was on a par with professionals we've seen in many big cities and the server, Nathan, was really perfect.
You're outside, but inside a wall, like it's Morocco or something. The whole atmosphere after dark is magical. Palms grow inside and are illuminated with different coloured lights. Mist comes out of wall jets. The music was by Carly Ann and she was memorable. The whole night was.
Our second time at Blue Dragon. Great food, nice drinks, interesting wine, wonderful service and lovely music.
Outdoor dining with ever changing music genres in a somewhat funky atmosphere.....mostly locals having fun.
Blue Dragon had been recommended to us and we decided to give it a try before we headed back mainland. I wish we would have tried it earlier because we would have been back again before we left. By far the best meal we had in the 8 days we were there. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!! The food, drinks, service, music and atmosphere was amazing.
On this night my spouse and I danced to the infectious sounds of Lava Rocks. Most of the patrons couldn't help themselves and danced also. The food and drink was wonderful. Excellent wine at an excellent pricepoint. We ordered the Ceasar Salad and the Beet Salad, a Hamburger with perfectly crisped fries, and Malasadas for desert. Everything was prepared well. Added to the evening was a friendly and welcoming Waitstaff. We can't wait to go back.
Food and service excellent! Drink menu was fun too. BUT so many flies!! Uncomfortable way to eat dinner.
Spectacular food! Authentic, casual vibe. Fantastic live music, awesomely friendly staff, Kid-friendly. Great drinks. Food is out-of-this-world. For a tourist, I would say "the curbside appeal is not the typical tourist attraction but, once youre inside, it will probably be the best meal of your vacation". I suspect, this is where the locals go for a great night, great music and great food.
We went for our first anniversary which was noted on the reservation. No staff even mentioned congratulations or tried to make evening special. Food was very good. Service was slow and not attentive.
Food was average but overpriced for both quality and portions. Service was good and music nice.
Good entertainment, good to get together and have a good time.
Nice place. I come here about once a month. This last time it took over an hour after being seated to get food delivered to table. Restaurant should inform guests what is happening like lost order, cook did not show for work, or whatever is the reason for the delay. Guests usually don't mind if they no the reason.
This was our third trip to the Blue Dragon and we will be sure to be back every time we are on the Big Island! We love the fact that they incorporate fresh local food (seafood, pork, beef, veggies, fruits, etc.). The chief and his team do a wonderful job creating both delicious and eye catching dishes. We would recommend this place to anyone, both locals and vacationers. Can't wait go back.
We loved it so much!!! Very creative dining expensive. Colorful, organic, healthy, absolutely wonderful!
We enjoyed this place. it had good food and dancing. We went on a Thursday so was a bit subdued. We liked the singer they had and it was overall a very pleasent evening. The dining area was out under the stars and moon so it made it a bit more romantic.
Presentation and tastes of the food was out of this world. The best food I have eaten on the island. Look forward to going again
The black bean rubbed steak was terrible. I ordered medium and it was served raw in the middle. They took it back and it was burnt on outside and still raw in places in the middle. The flavor was terrible.
We booked a party of 8 for a birthday, and when we arrived we were sent home as the power was out in town. No sorry, or be sure to come back, just "we're closed".
Great evening at the Blue Dragon! Our server was delightful!!
The food and music were great. We had had a long day on the Big Island and were almost not going to go out but we rallied and were happy that we did. The food was fresh (the taro dip with our fries was yummy. There was a fun barefoot band playing that added nicely to the energy.
Fun place, good food, excellent music. If you get the right server the service can be great also.
Great appetizers and we enjoyed the entrée. Seems I had a case of the runs after eating the ahi avocado appetizer. My sister tasted one while I ate the rest. She had a slight case of the runs while mine was kinda bad. Plz check the fish???
The band was exceptional, The Larry Dupio band kept us on the dance floor 4 hours. We love coming to the Blue Dragon cause we love Bo the server & Larry the sound man🤗 & the wonderful music!! Always have a gud time😍
Music was good, food was great, service was below par.
Service is outstanding. Staff very friendly and attentive. Food deliciously prepared. It is a bit of a drive from Kona but well worth the effort. Fun, lively and the band was terrific. Mahalo Til next time.
The Blue Dragon is a unique dining experience. No roof , just palm trees, stars, and the moon. If you are on the Big Island check it out.
Great food, service was amazing! Highly recommend
Delicious unique menu items such as the Living Salad and the Smore dessert.
The music was wonderful too.
We live in Colorado but eveytime we fly to the Big Island we plan a visit to The Blue Dragon
Excellent food (chicken wings, hamburger, fries, ceasar salad, homemade toasted coconut ice cream -- all fixed to perfection), excellent drink (terrific values on terrific wines), and excellent LIVE dance music (courtesy of Johnny Shot) added up to an excellent evening. I'm a broken record when talking about The Blue Dragon because there is no better value on the Big Island for your dining dollar. Visitors, don't miss it (and don't leave it 'til the night before you leave because you will want to visit more than once) and locals, what are you waiting for? As a local, I can't get enough.
Great live music with a dance floor! Delicious food, large variety to choose from. Wonderful service!
We saw this restaurant on the best outside dining list. It was interesting. The food was ok. I expected better based on the reviews. Good but nothing to write home about. The musician they had was very good. A number of kids jumping around on the dance floor. It just wasn't as good as I expected.
This place is fabulous! Food is absolutely exquisite and the entertainment is great!
The food was really just awesome. Great ambiance with music and good service, great food. It is not a budget eatery but you will not be disappointed in either the food quality or the atmosphere. It is a must eat place every time we visit the Big Island
This restaurant ROCKS. My husband, who has been around the whole world, actually exclaimed that this is now his favorite restaurant. EVER. We started with salads: I had the living salad, which was delicious and my daughter enjoyed snipping the leaves for me. Hubby had the tomato salad. They were both excellent. He had the steak, and it was cooked to perfection. I had the fresh catch special and it was insanely good. The cocktails were generous and so good. I got the malasadas for dessert, which nobody at the table liked but me. They were salty sweet with a tinge of spice. I devoured them. The service was a nice, unrushed pace. Don't be in a hurry here. Kick back, enjoy the space between courses and listen to the excellent music. Now we have another excuse to go back to Hawaii. Blue Dragon is a destination unto itself.
Reservations for a party of 3 was made via open table 24 hours before the dinner date for 545pm. Upon arrival the hostess seated us at the outside bar area. I explained we were celebrating 2 birthdays and wanted a table. The hostess replied we would have to come back in two weeks to get a table. So I start to call other restaurants in the area searching for seating availability; when the manager approached us and said he had seats for us. While seating us he said this was a warning he was not going to accommodate us in the future. I have never been treated so rudely by a restaurant hostess and manager. As the night went on there were tables that surrounded us that were not filled the entire evening in the main dining room. The food, music and service was mediocre. The manager never returned to our table during the evening to see how things were going- not a friendly environment for dinning. I would not recommend the restaurant or return again.
A romantic restaurant open to the stars. It specializes in fresh seafood, with the fishing boats literally in the harbor across the street. The food is delicious and creative. The pastry chef is off the charts on creativity, and seems to always hit the mark. We have been at least four times, and never disappointed. We have another week in Hawaii, and plan another visit to Blue Dragon while here. It is a true gem.
We gave them a try without knowing much about the place and were very pleased with all aspects. (I was originally not as thrilled with the total cost, but ultimately felt that it was worth the slight extravagance considering the food and service quality plus the varied open air entertainment. TIP: Look for the 25% off coupon in some tourist magazines for dining before 6:30.)
Entrees were consistently great with the perfect Niihau Ranch Lamb Chops being my wife's all time favorite. Ridiculously fresh garden salad, beet salad, Dragon Ballz, Kalua Pork Tacos and Coconut Panna Cotta dessert all hit home runs. And some of their specialty cocktails were very inventive and delicious; the Dragon's Milk has at least 11 ingredients! We liked it so much we went back the night before we had to leave for home. Repeat performance! Service both nights was top notch, just the right amount of attentiveness. Highly recommended.
The atmosphere and dining experience will depend heavily on the entertainment. The first night was a very pleasant low key folksy singer/guitarist that made for a calm but enjoyable evening. The second had an excellent "big band" that was definitely more energetic with plenty of people on the dance floor. But it was never raucous and surprisingly not too loud to have a conversation. Check their website for the calendar of events to see what kind of entertainment is planned. Even if you're not sure, go anyway as it probably will be fun.
Although pricy, that's what makes this place more of a treat for my girlfriend and I. We wouldn't go if it weren't for the food. We had amazing Big Island beef and were enthralled that the chefs use as much local ingredients as possible. Live music makes for a fun environment, although we did hope for slightly lower volume...otherwise, the ambience is great.
all four of us were very happy with our dishes. our waiter was very pleasant and helpful. the only issue was some flys till the sun went down.....
