Having never dined at the Bistro, I had no expectations other than a friend’s glowing recommendation. We thoroughly enjoyed the dinner and actually had a wonderful dessert (a rare indulgence). The dining experience was truly a step back in time...to my visits to Paris in the 70’s. The restaurant should rate five stars in anyone’s guide!
Bistro Bobette was an amazing experience. Not only was the food outstanding, but the service was the highlight. The ambience was spot on. Please go here for a nice dinner, you will not regret it. I plan to revisit for my birthday next year!
Les repas sont bons, mais les cocktails sont un peu chers.
My husband and I had lunch here twice. We enjoyed it. I had a friend from Georgia visiting because her father had surgery at VCU. Four college friends (age: early 50s) met for dinner. The service was horrible. Our waitress was a SNOB. I was embarrassed to have recommended Bistro Bobette to my friends. While in the restroom, I overheard foul language coming from the kitchen. The wait staff was ready for us to leave - I felt very uncomfortable as we were the last four people in the restaurant. We received dirty looks, and I told my friends we needed to vacate the premises. Upon returning home from my night out with friends, I told my husband I would not return to Bistro Bobette. I also apologized to my friends for recommending it. I’m not a complainer, but after my recent experience, I absolutely DO NOT recommend this restaurant.
Slow service. Perfunctory, I would call it. Took forever to get our glasses of sparkling wine and the waitress seemed annoyed when I raised my hand to get her attention. I honestly thought she'd forgotten but she told me the bar was busy and yes, she'd bring it out soon. My escargot appetizer came to the table vigorously bubbling, then right after the waiter left, one of them exploded. Yes, exploded. Garlic-infused escargot butter and herb mess, all over the tablecloth and one of our water glasses. The server was kind of nonchalant and said she'd put another piece if bistro paper OVER the mess. I said how about not doing that, and I had to roll up the soiled paper myself and hand it to her. At this point, the manager should have come over, profusely apologized, and comped us something.... anything. Just the gesture would have sufficed. But nothing like that happened. The food was good. I had Monkfish and my wife had Trout. But it took forever to arrive. If not for the fact that we had struck up a conversation with the lady and her daughter sitting next to us, we would have been seriously bummed about the wait time. Dessert was good. Crème Brulee and Mousse. And the waitress wasn't surly or anything, but maybe she was overwhelmed... not sure really, but man I would have handled that escargot explosion in a totally different way.
It was a wonderfully delicious meal! Fabulous French cuisine and reasonable sized portions. It is too expensive for us to go there very often, but it was a lovely experience.
The only thing keeping me from checking straight 5s on the review was the challenge that our (excellent) waitperson had in covering two stations plus seating people. He was excellent but seemed very rushed by all that was swirling around him. Perhaps one of the waitstaff was unexpectedly out?
Excellent as always
The service is great, the food is very good French cooking!
An amazing night, the food was phenomenal. Definitely a place for foodies or for a romantic dinner
My wife & I were there for Valentine's Day so I expected that it would be pretty busy and it certainly was. There is insufficient review space available to document the many things that went wrong on this trip. This was my first time to frequent this restaurant so I may need to visit again in order to assess it fairly. My initial impression was a very favorable one but things went downhill rather rapidly. The two biggest issues that I encountered on this trip was that 1) a large party was seated next to us that was drinking heavily and became quite loud and boisterous. No one from the wait staff could be bothered to ask them to quiet down; instead, another nearby customer did - - things did quiet down after that but only briefly and 2) after waiting almost an hour for our deserts, I requested our check; the deserts miraculously showed up minutes later - - no check; just the deserts. My wife refused to eat her desert believing that it was now tainted and I myself had just lost my appetite. After requesting he check yet again, another lengthy wait ensued. The one bright spot on the whole experience was that we did not get billed for the deserts. Needless to say, I struggled with the idea of leaving any kind of a tip. Overall, it was probably one of the most over priced & worst dining experiences of my life.
Terrible experience. Inattentive waitstaff making excuses for food being brought out late and cold. Expensive but bland tasting food made me sick for the next 24 hours. We were really looking forward to this. I had to chase down my waiter to get the check because we couldn’t get out of there fast enough. Very disappointed
Enjoyed a day before Valentine's Day with my wife and another couple. This is a classic French restaurant with variants on many of the usual menu items. Everything is very well prepared, both appetizers and main courses. Daily specials are attractive, but some of the standbys are really great. One of the nicest rooms in Richmond for conversation, with lots of historic district charm. Service is excellent. Highly recommended.
We absolutely loved our romantic dinner at Bistro Bobette. We keep returning so my wife can have her favorite dish in all of Richmond--the Trout Almondine with perfectly toasted almonds. Thank you for giving us the requested table. It was a busy night--a mix of business and pre-Valentine's Day. Thank you for being one of our favorites in the city.
We had such amazing food here! I highly recommend it. We ordered the spicy pecans, oxtail ravioli with black truffle--I wish it came as an entree, and tuna tartar for appetizers. We had the fish specials for dinner with a side of mac and cheese and it was fantastic. We had a perfect finish with the creme brulee. It's going to become a regular place in our dining cycle!
Our waiter forgot we were there, and we watched every other table in the restaurant - most of whom arrived after us- get served and finish before we got our food. The food itself was lacking in overall flavor and was pretty expensive. Nice ambience, and our waiter was apologetic, but this dining experience was a dud.
My husband had the rabbit stew and I had braised ribs.
Wonderful experience! We were seated promptly and our server came to our table immediately. Server suggested an excellent wine for my wife and cocktail for me. I had a meatless plate of string beans, Pome frites, escalloped potatoes and macaroni and cheese. Each was a pleasure! My wife had rainbow trout with string beans and almonds which she raved about! Says it was absolute perfection! We shared a lovely elderberry creme brûlée for dessert. A delicious meal! We hope to return when we visit Richmond again.
Birthday dinner. The server was outstanding. Food took a little long to come out.
Food was not memorable and service okay. Was an okay experience will not return.
Our waiter was fun and attentive. Three of the four meals were excellent. Crime brûlée and chocolate mousse were yummy.
Our return to Bistro Bobette was for our Anniversary. We are sorry that visiting fell off our normal schedule. We were reminded that one of--perhaps "the"--best entrees in the City is on the regular menu: Sautéed Rainbow Trout with String Beans and Almond Butter. The Almonds were toasted so perfectly. This has to be a signature dish. The meatless plate where you choose three sides (I recommend Macaroni & Cheese, Green Beans, Frites, and Potatoes au gratin) was wonderful. We were treated like royalty with some champagne and an after dinner drink. It was marvelous, perfection and Richmond is lucky to have this place. Thank you for a wonderful dinner experience.
Waiters are surly. You are not made to feel welcome NO vegetarian options, except for fries mac & cheese and the like. Overpriced. Will not go back.
Wonderful dinner from start to finish. Food and service were excellent.
We dine here as often as possible. We are about 3 hours out of Richmond, but when we travel in that direction Bistro Bobette is always a destination. Food is fabulous, wait staff most attentive without interruption, and the owner/chef is incredibly talented. We do not know of another location in the area with such authentic French food.
Loved the oxtail soup and pork shoulder. Great snow day dinner!
Bistro Bobette is a decent place with decent fare.
The service is always good. The food is creatively described and somewhat less creatively prepared and delivered but good nonetheless.
If your desire superb French fare, you may want to travel to a larger city.
Broke a long time rule and ate out on Christmas! While there were some problems (dishwasher did not show up) we thoroughly enjoyed the evening.
Why? Because the staff was thoroughly professional, explained things fully, knew what they were talking about and worked as a team to meet the challenges. Oh, and the chef and the kitchen staff knew what they were doing and turned out amazing meals. We will go back, and our daughter who lives in DC has already asked to return on a future trip.
Groups who arrived late for their reservations and brought two extra people should NOT be allowed to abuse the staff!
Crowded, but everything was well organized. Staff was attentive and engaging. One of the few laces open on Christmas for dinner. Thank you!
We decided to eat here for Christmas dinner while we were staying in Williamsburg. We were 10 minutes early for our reservation and did not get seated until 45 minutes later. It was frustrating to see guests that arrived after us, get seated before we did. When we got seated we waited another 15 minutes for water. Again, frustrating to see other guests being waited on and served before we even got water. We had to ask for bread and when we received the bread it was burned. Besides the young lady at the bar, the service was not good, nor friendly, especially with the manager. We definitely felt we were not treated or respected as paying customers. The undertones we experienced was very disappointing. We cancelled our order and left. We could not justify spending good money on bad service with the undertones we felt.
It was tough to evaluate the service because the staff was clearly overwhelmed and understaffed. The food was very good but probably not worth the $72 cost. Weird vibe, but it could have been just an off night.
I must give Jay Rayner of The Guardian credit, his review of another French restaurant, Le Cinq in Paris, is how I felt: “There is only one thing worse than being served a terrible meal: being served a terrible meal by earnest waiters who have no idea just how awful the things they are doing to you are”.
I will say that the woman behind the bar seemed to be the only person who was capable at the restaurant, she was pleasant and accommodating. Kudos to her and her alone for being the positive standout on a most disappointing evening.
Big City quality, consistently good. Charming atmosphere, intimate size. Richmond is fortunate to have Bistro Bobette. Understated elegance.
Service was great. The setting was romantic, the music was smoothing. The food was not worth it.
Christmas Eve. Very nice and not at all rushed.
Considering it was Christmas Eve, the food was average, small portioned, and the price was practically double what I would have paid for the quality of our meals. Nice atmosphere and service, but food was so-so
This little gem was a pleasant surprise. I went in expecting a mehhh experience but it exceeded my expectations!
We started off with escargot which was butter-heaven and a savory tart. Mind you, I HATE onions and I actually ate the tart- that's how you know something is GOOD. For the main course I ordered a steak medium-rare and it came out perfect. It took longer than usual for the food to arrive but you can't rush perfection :) The wait was worth it!
One of the servers is from Paris and the way he describes food is incredible. I've never had a poire belle helene but the imagery I got when he described it was spot on. It's refreshing to meet a server that's passionate about his job and food.
Will definitely come back here the next time I'm in town!
Food was good enough. However, my wifes IPA was warm and time between appetizer and the main course was spaced too much. The restaurant wasn't very busy.
There was confusion when we first arrived, apparently we were seated at the wrong table and then were told we needed to move which was very rude and off putting.
Lovely experience. Great service, ambience and food. High quality, organic ingredients. Someone cares to the detail . Food presentation excellent. This is not a place to get a huge plate of unknown food and quality for cheap with 5 portions of leftovers for home.
Halibut special outstanding! Grass fed Rib Eye, cooked to perfection. Never had this quality at any steakhouse.
We are looking forward to returning.
