Major disappointment. Perhaps they've lost their chef.
Great Decor Good place to eat before a show. Chicken pot pie they’re specialty way overrated very bland no real zing or flavors thou the pork chop was big and cooked perfectly with a nice char.Heirloom tomatoes with Burrata was also great. Expensive!
The food was excellent. However, the service was poor... we waited 45 minutes for dessert, and finally gave up and flagged down the waitress. The atmosphere was ok to start, but a drunk party of 6 sat down near us, and were so loud, that neighboring tables asked to move, and everyone had to talk loud to hear themselves over the table of 6. The management should have insisted the noise level be reduced by the party of 6, or else move them to the loud bar.
Rustic old San Francisco feel with dark wood paneling. A very good restaurant at the top of Nob Hill.
The restaurant was listed as “French.” Although the food was great, as was the service, it was not French. No classically defined French dishes, which was disappointing.
Whenever I visit San Francisco, I try to dine here at least once. The service is impeccable and the food is classic French/American of great quality. On this occasion the experience was again great!
I love this place - the epitome of old school class! Great bar area as well as the dining area.
Unique San Francisco experience. One of the few traditions that has remained unchanged
Frankly, the food was dull and the service lackluster. A chicken pot pie that I was told is “our signature dish,” was bland and worse than cafeteria food. I almost concluded that they were trying to get rid of me. Instead of a dessert menu, I was given a little carte with “special” entrées and a wine list. If that wasn’t a message, it was lunkheaded. Word to the wise: skip this joint entirely. Or, if you must, step in and enjoy the lush decor, but avoid the food and the service.
The physical restaurant, service and the meal were outstanding. Great experience!
Our reservation was at 5:30, when the restaurant opened for dinner. The server asked if we were going to a show, which we were. We enjoyed our meal, from appetizer to dessert and after-dinner coffee, and still had plenty of time to get to the theater because the server timed our meal perfectly. When we first arrived the restaurant was quiet, with pleasant background music provided by a pianist. As more people arrived for dinner the noise level rose to a moderate level, but we could still hear each other easily. The food was well prepared and presented beautifully. Our server was excellent. I describe the restaurant as being old time posh, with luxurious decor from the mid-twentieth century. Definitely a special occasion restaurant.
The food could be better. Onion soup was great as was wedge salad but the salmon was served thick skin up and not cooked enough or close to tender/flakey, the lamb chops ordered medium were quite rsre and the cuts too thick for a nice plate. Dessert was complementary because of the above and it was excellent. We just enjoy being there with the piano music snd ambience but wish we liked the entrees more.
Wonderful service, delicious food, and beautiful ambiance. Highly recommend for a date or special occasion.
We live in the neighborhood and needed a place for a mini-family reunion dinner, i.e., we had to be able to hear each other, be assured of a good, non-fussy dinner, preferably in a classic San Francisco place. The Big 4 worked out beautifully. The only criticism was that our server who was working diligently probably had too many tables to cover.
Lovely evening. Great food! Old school SF experience.
Everything was very good or excellent except for the pace of the meal. It was far too slow.
Very comfortable with most gracious service. Food was wonderful. Our top pick in a week of wonderful dining experiences.
This is our fifth visit in the past 18 months. The food and service is excellent and very consistent. The restaurant is relatively very quiet and for us this is a huge plus. You can actually have a conversation. So many restaurants these days have overbearing loud pulsing music and the Big Four has a nice quiet ambience. We will be back for sure.
The Big Four is probably my favorite place to eat in San Francisco. It has a friendly atmosphere, and is reminiscent of a very masculine old style San Francisco Men's Club. The food is delicious, and piano music can be heard in the background, yet is not overpowering for casual conversation.
Great like always why are closing! It is very sad been coming for years and always wonderful
Didn’t make us feel special. Booked a 34th anniversary dinner thinking that might warrant something better than a normal business dinner. Not so. They placed us at an “adequate table”. The server was very professional but the best part of the evening was the bottle of wine we brought from home.
Soggy limp Belgian waffle for 20 bucks? Let’s move on.
We have been eating at the Big Four for 20 years about 3 to 4 times a year and they never let us down in a good meal in a beautiful space. SM
Everything was perfect. Slight hiccup with the reservation but they were able to accommodate me very quickly. Great food, cocktails and ambiance.
The hostess was incredibly rude to me when I asked for a table. She said it was full of reservations but would let me know if someone happened to cancel. I happened to see inside the restaurant which was empty. I got online and made a reservation through Open Table and went back to let her know we were ready to be seated. She was less than kind, replying with "oh" with a scowl face. After being seated it took 20 minutes to be given water or helped at all. Very dissatisfied with the service. It was so rude. Will not return.
Love this restaurant. One of our favorites. Like the old school vibe and history.
This is a wonderful, classic San Franciso restaurant. Fantastic food, delicious cocktails, and the ambience cannot be beat. It's quiet but relaxed, with a cozy, fire-lit environment with deep-seated leather chairs and a classy, elegant vibe. We come here for special occasions or to celebrate events. Service is wonderful, and food is outstanding, cocktails are delicious. Everything is very high-end, but not too expensive. Highly recommend!
Exceptional service. We were allowed to relax and enjoy our meal at a leisurely pace when we said we were not in a hurry
This classic-looking spot had great drinks and am amazing dinner menu. The atmosphere is perfect and it's a treat watching the lone bartender serve up drinks for the whole bar and restaurant. Excellent service, and while it can get busy it is worth the wait and the space gives you a lot to look at and enjoy.
The Big 4 is a place all Bay Area foodies should try at least once. Old school, dark, and stylish...a place for a Manhattan and a perfect steak. The service is outstanding...a nice change from where most restaurants are heading nowadays. Pricey, but worth it if you want a taste of "Barbary Coast" dining on Nob Hill.
I will be back for sure!
Ate here early before a concert nearby. Server asked if I was going to the concert. Service was crisp and professional. Food was great, chicken pot pie. The bread was out of this world. Will definitely go back.
Outstanding restaurant for my husband's 60th birthday! The food was wonderful as was the service. This is one of the most romantic restaurants we know of in the City.
Absolutely fantastic meal for a very special occasion - everything about The Big 4 was perfect. Our waiter - Ron - made the evening super special and looked after us. Would definitely recommend and visit next time we’re in SF!
nice ambiance, but the food is very boring. Outside of chicken pot pie (which you typically don't see at a high end place) the menu is BORING.
This grand building has a wonderful historic ambiance and excellent food.
This was one of the best meals I have had in a long time. Service was efficient and not intrusive. The chicken pot pie was amazing. The lamb as well as the charcuterie.
Wine list was balanced and the Sancerre was chilled to perfection. Will be back when I am in town.
Food was outstanding and service impeccable. I would eat here again and again.
I live in San Francisco and know elegant fine dining. It’s been a long time since I’ve have such classic French trained cooking especially since what I ordered was Chicken Pot Pie. It came beautifully presented and the waiter asked if she could turn it onto my plate. She proceeded to elegantly do so as though it was a precious soufflé. Needless to say, it was the best I have ever had along with everything I ordered including the ubiquitous Chocolate Cake with a soft center.... usually just OK, this one seemed baked to order with a whipped cream perfectly sweetened (hardly at all).
I adore this restaurant. I highly recommend you go!
Thank you, Big Four, for a special dinner. You were incredible to seat us at a lovely table for two. Your friendly server made the occasion as fun as she was. And the somelier understood our needs perfectly -- a little education, an adventure into a new wine within our price point. Nothing snooty. Just a great meal, service, and vibe.
Terrific service. Ron was very good and made great conversation. Great for lunch as well. The French fries are outstanding.
