Bernardin's Restaurant at the Zevely House
Wonderful Valentine's Day meal. Had salmon and spouse had filet. Both perfectly done. Good service even though they were quite busy.
Great food, great experience.
Always impressed when we eat here. Great food. Great service.
Wonderful. The lobster on lobster is amazing
This is the most enjoyable restaurant in Winston Salem
We went here for a special occasion - and upstairs seating in a quiet room is best. Make sure to request the room or you’ll end up in the noisy open area. The food was excellent - I had lobster special (slightly over cooked) and husband had surf and turf (cooked perfect). Overall, a nice little Winston gem that Is in a great location. Private parking brings up the rating too. My complaints are more with the service (although the staff has to hike up and down stairs so I’m not certain they could be more attentive). Also the bathrooms need remodeling. They’re down in the basement “dungeon” and while air freshener is abundant - you can’t hide the need for an uplift. It would go a long way towards moving the restaurant up a level.
My duck was served RAW! Unbelievable. I sent it back. When they returned the duck to the table, they had recooked it with the sauce still on it, which was now burned. The server and maybe the manager was apologizing for some oversight or another to every single table near us. Good server but everything else was really, really terrible. No question, this is one of the worst restaurants in Winston-Salem. Unquestionably the worst value!
Food is always unique, well presented, and fresh. Wait staff was friendly and cognizant of conversation flow at the table.
The house as chilly and only one server greeted us or even was cordial, and we passed him with the Hostess who was taking us upstairs to ur table. FYI!!! My mother is 83 and having only one bathroom in the basement, which means you have to climb at least one or if you are seated on the second floor as we were -TWO full flights of gorgeous, but narrow treaded stairs, it is not very patron friendly.
Sadly, the most interesting offering on their menu, the kangaroo, was not available. It had been "86ed" from the menu even though they had it still printed as an offering. Replacing it with a farm raised venison seem a lack luster choice. The presentation of the food was lovely. But my tuna, while rare, was a rare offering of QUITE OBVIOUSly fully gristeled fish. Since the presentation was sliced, the chef should have caught this before sending it out. The duck, venison and filet were prepared nosey, but it all was mostly over priced and rather bland. The Spring House is still the best place for fine dining in Winston.
Great food with great service.. Enjoyed dining in a historic house.
Hesitantly yes I would refer a friend to see if they had the same experience. Food was not tasty at all. I had Brie stuffed chicken which had almost no Brie , was tough and little flavor. In our area a waitress spilled water on a customer and another dropped silverware in the floor. Not pleased but willing to try again
We went for Big Eat & I had the special brie stuffed chicken with mashed potatoes, & a small serving of turnip roots & prosciutto. It was supposedly half price special so only $10, but would have been disappointed had I paid $20. The asparagus was left off my plate & I had to ask for it. Chicken had very little flavor. Also 3 people at my table & bread basket had only 2 rolls. Temperature was good when I arrived at 6 but got very cold later......Was there from 6 to 8:45. Food at Bernardins has been much better when eating there in the past. And dining in outdoor area in warmer weather is pleasant.
Great food and service! Food presentation was quite good also. The bread was amazing. We really enjoyed the butter lettuce salad. Dessert was delicious. Parking was convenient and easy.
The men’s restroom floor had water on it and there was a sign to notify. Perhaps a scented candle on the bathroom level would help in general given the mixed aromas.
The food is excellent! I give Bernardin’s a 5 stars for that. Compared to other fine dining restaurants I’ve attended, the service was good but not what you’d expect at a place like this. I give service a 4 star. The only and only reason I would not recommend the Winston-Salem location is due to the set up of the restaurant. Both times I ate at this facility I sat upstairs in a small room with too many chairs per square foot. You can literally hear every single conversation at each table and it was irritating. A little music to cut the side conversations might have done some good. I really did not like this aspect of the restaurant and I felt uncomfortable both times I attended.
We went for our anniversary! Though we've eaten here before (several years ago) and it has al way been good, this time everything was exceptional! Waygu beef was fantastic and the Sriracha Mahi was delicious! We ordered 3 desserts (special occasion after all) and all were perfect. The restaurant is in an old house with a really neat history, but that means its not handicapped friendly. Bathroom is in the basement and not in great shape, but that's not unexpected in an older building. Overall wonderful and will definitely be going back!
This is our absolute favorite spot. The atmosphere is cozy but not too loud so you can actually enjoy a conversation. The servers welcome us back every time and are beyond nice, great recommendations for the specials. The menu is always executed flawlessly... don't skip the peach blueberry cobbler with praline ice cream for dessert!
New Years Eve
Amazing experience! Food was incredible and service was as well. Highly recommended.
Exceptionally good food this evening. I've always thought Bernardin's was a good solid restaurant, but the quality of the food tonite really impressed all four of us at the table: Arctic Char, Scallops and Wagyu Beef. One of the best meals we've had in Winston Salem in the past 10 years. Keep up the good work.
Came on a recent weekday and found that the service was not as good as it has been before. We had to repeatedly ask for things that should have been automatically served or in place. It took 15 minutes for the wine to appear and the order was not complete. In addition when the food was brought to the table, all of the dinners were cold. Although the food was delicious, we were disappointed in the overall event.
First bad experience there. Realize it was Christmas Eve, but our waiter was rude from the moment we arrived. He obviously did not want to be there to the point of making everyone uncomfortable. The meal was excellent as always, except for one fish entree being a little dry, but overall a very disappointing an embarrassing experience since we were treating some friends who had never been there.
Horseradish crusted salmon was fabulous. As always. Wait staff attentive without being intrusive. The only thing that was not perfect was the staircase going to the second floor. Quite steep and a little concerning coming down.
Quaint dining with attentive service, delicious food with a variety of options. I had the snapper special which was wonderful. My wife shared the seafood pasta with our son and they both enjoyed it very much. I look forward to a return trip very soon.
Our entrees were very good, but the bread pudding seemed more like a cinnamon roll with toppings than an actual bread pudding. Our waitress was very good. Our son was upset by all the exotic animals on the menu. It did seem a little excessive... kangaroo? Seemed more like a conversation piece than a focus on excellent food. That being said, the items we did choose were very good (filet, ribeye, tofu, lobster).
Bernardins never disappoints. Terry and his crew have been delivering the goods in Winston Salem for years. Always at the top of their game, always a memorable experience. The best food in historic house and the best service anywhere.
Waiter did not get order correct; then told my wife, she did not order this-which she did; as I heard her order correctly.
Great food and service!!
We always enjoy the restaurant. The food is consistently good as is the service. It is friendly, honors reservations and makes you feel welcome. We reserve it mostly for special occasions, there are a number during the year.
My wife and I went to dinner here for the first time in a few years. It was my wife's birthday, so we had planned a night out. We started with sharing the calamari for an appetizer. It was certainly a large portion, plenty to share. However, the squid that was used was very large, not what would be expected for calamari. Though the coating was tasty , it was overcooked and tough. Next we split the butter lettuce salad. The kitchen did a nice job in splitting it for us, and the salad was very good. The dressing was sufficient, but not overly heavy. As it turned, the salad was the high point of the meal. We then each had the fish special; California black bass. It was served with white rice, sauteed vegetables and mushrooms with a peach chutney. Though the fish was cooked well, it was served skin side up with a flabby, non-crisped skin. This was very unappetizing to look at and certainly not appetizing to eat. The combination of the vegetables, mushrooms, peach on top of the rice was a little much in competing flavors.
Other reviews are quite favorable, perhaps this was an off night.
Food was fantastic!!! Server was fair at best. I couldn’t hear what he was saying most of the time and he was not very enthusiastic .
Bernardin's is one of our favorite restaurants, and our most recent visit did not disappoint. The service and food were impeccable. Looking forward to next time!
The staff and the owner, Freddie, took great care of us for my birthday dinner. I had the scallops and my husband had the Wagyu steak. Both perfectly cooked. The scallops had a sweet-hot bit of sauce with chipotle plum vinaigrette. & an amazing risotto with asparagus and mushrooms. We also shared Brussels sprouts and a salad to start and finished with a maple sweet potato cheesecake. A delicious meal in a relaxing setting. Will come back.
I picked this place bc of the fish and seafood options on the menu; all three of us had fish or shellfish; all three of us LOVED the food. I had been here prior years ago and the ambiance was better but it hasnt changed per se, we just had. REALLY loud party next to us. It's in an old beautiful house, but small parties and larger table tops don't work so well. If they could reconfigure some of the rooms and add an option for more quiet spaces that would be great. Definitely going back though, and soon. The scallops, black bass, and salmon all awesome.
Everything was great, the food was wonderful and our waitress was on point. The only thing that surprised me was the bathrooms were nasty. But overall we had a great experience and will be back
Really very nice and the food was uniquely prepared...and great!
We have been patrons for several years and it has never disappointed us and has always been an enjoyable occasion.
Our server was inattentive. We had to flag her down multiple times to get what we wanted. Then our food came out and my steak and potatoes were room temperature. I sent it back. It was our first time at this restaurant, but we won't be back.
Nice place, very good food- excellent service
It took a very long time to get our food and when it finally came my fish was raw inside. They had to take it back and cook it. By the time it came back, everyone else in my party had finished their meal. Also, my husband’s utensils were dirty. The second glass of wine he ordered was not correct but at that point we didn’t want to bother our very nice waitress with another issue. That said, the food is excellent and the ambiance wonderful. Just seemed to be a bad night for them.
Birthday celebration. Enjoyed an outside table. Food was fantastic and our server very attentive and knowledgeable. Great night out!
