My son and I are regulars at Benihana in Newport Beach because my office is 5 minutes walking distance. Because my son went off to college last Fall, we haven't been around. He just came back for Summer, so we resumed our favorite hangout. Dinner on this particular visit was extremely disappointing, and I don't think we will be back for a while. The food was lousy, namely the chicken; we both noticed the color when it was thrown onto the grill. Onto the Chef, not sure if he's new, but we never saw him before, the food was mostly salty. As for the service, it fits well with the theme of the evening. My son's hors d’oeuvres (a simple Rainbow roll) came after the chef had already served a round of shrimps and did his usual "Choo-Choo train" comedy bit. My simple bowl of white rice never came, my hot tea never got refilled because the server never came around until it was time for the check. By the way, everyone's salads got served long after the chef's arrival and started cooking. Tips are based on the level of service, but yet, all guests were confronted with a choice of 18%, 20% and 25%. Against my will, I went along only because all the employees shared the pool of tips so fine. But no, my son and I will stay away from this particular establishment for awhile.

Food was good as usual but the most frustrating thing was having to valet for parking now. On Fridays and Saturdays they charge $10 just to park your car. They used to have an entire free lot which was so easy but starting Father’s Day weekend they changed it NOT for the better. We had reservations at 5:15 and all the self parking spots were full. Street parking wasn’t available it was also full so we were forced to valet. Just frustrating because we were regulars but don’t think this type of restaurant should force customers to valet. I don’t think we’ll be coming back for a while now. Our bill was $175 at least give us free parking lol

The food was excellent. The chef was really good. Service was so so. Our reservations were at 7:30 PM we did not get seated until 8:00 PM.

Terrible food service not clean and we asked the cooking show for the kids the cook cheifbon our table bar grill refused terrible !!!! First and last expierence

Always a fun time. Our table chef was excellent and very personable. The filet mignon was particularly good.

It was Father’s Day and very busy. The front hostesses were getting yelled at because of delay, but were so calm. They were amazing and should be given more credit— I would’ve lost it. My food was delicious and everyone was working so hard.

“Reservations” means absolutely nothing at the Benihana in Newport Beach. We arrived at 1:35PM for our 1:45 PM reservation. We were finally seated at 2:20 PM. Then - We sat at the Teppan table waiting for the cook for 40 minutes. We finally ate at 3:15 PM. The waiting area was full of people waiting to be seated from their reservation. People were frustrated at the lengthy wait for a table then another lengthy wait once seated awaiting for a cook. Don’t go here if you have a tight schedule or have to be else where on time. This lateness to seat customer upon reservation time has happened several times before & continues to be a debacle nightmare.

We had a wonderful Father’s Day experience. Our 1:30 reservation was delayed by about 1/2 hour. That would be my only concern. We had a party of 8, with 2 small children. At the teppan grill, we waited for a bit. But all in all, we had a great time with delicious food❣️
