This restaurant has closed and needs to be removed from Open Table!
Basan has always been a very special place for us to go on special occasions.
The shushi and entrees have been excellent every time we have gone.
Our servers were terrific, Victoria and Molly were very friendly and accurate with our orders.
Unfortunately, Basan is now closed for business so I cannot recommend people to go there.
All I can say is "Goodbye old friend, amd thank you for the great experiences we've had".
So sorry this restaurant is closing. One of our favorites!
It was a great final meal. So sorry the restaurant has closed!
After work dinner. Very nice. Sorry to hear you will be closing.
The food was delicious and the service was great, but the menu needs more vegetarian choices
Basan Sushi was some if the best sushi I've ever had. The sushi was surprisingly fesh and light. My father and I want here for a nice dinner and that's exactly what we got. The only complaint I have is that I reserved a table for 2 using Open Table and went I told the employee working i had a reservation he said it was for three and continued to make a big deal because the number of people was incorrect. Other than the small convince my experience was great. The restaurant was modern style and was very clean. I would definitely recommend.
As always, Basan's food is really good, especially the sushi. When the restaurant fills up it gets pretty loud, and difficult to hold a conversation with someone across the table. The service this time was not great - I wasn't even offered a refill on my iced tea, and with wasabi that spicy, iced tea is a must, in large quantities. I've had good service there before, so I won't let one lackluster waitress spoil it, but it's definitely been better.
If you avoid the tofu, you'll be fine
A great place for a meal before a DPAC performance. Offers 10% discount for the night of the performance for attendees
Sushi was run of the mill... proportions good, but priced a bit higher for the quality/taste. parking inconvenient to access, esp with other events going on in the area. 3/5 - adequate, but will not be going back.
The food and service is always good. One of the best places to get sushi in Durham.
Went for a sushi dinner and the selection was great, the specials board had very unusual fish to try and the regular menu was varied and clearly marked with GF options.
Everything was super fresh and arrived quickly.
the service was equally good with the waitress being friendly and casual.
The food is a bit pricey but the quality is top notch.
This was only our second time here in two years. This was an early Sunday evening dinner and there seemed to be no activity at DPAC or the ball park, so it was quiet and not crowded. The meal however was great. We will be back on another trip to Durham.
Best sushi I have had in a while. Host staff were very fun. I like this place, will be back soon!
Really enjoyed the freshness of the food and the creative dishes--and the cocktails!
Excellent meal. Best Brussels sprouts I’ve ever had in my life. Fish in the sushi had that awesome buttery quality of quality, fresh fish. Great service.
We came in for restaurant week and the food is so disappointing! Very small portion with plain taste. Would not recommend!
Great dinner before a show at DPAC. In the past we’ve found service to be good but slow, but we were pleasantly surprised during this visit. Service was both good & prompt.
Great food and service
Splendid sushi and sushi rolls. However, we were disappointed by the lesser number of fish sushi available not in rolls. Rolls seem to be their specialty, and the two we chose were spectacular. The fish sushi including several from the specials of the day were really very fine as well.
Best sushi in the area, without question
The staff was super friendly and the food was excellent. I got the surf and turf sushi, it was delicious! They had a good selection of sushi rolls for varying palettes, as well as ramen for folks who are still wary of sushi. The location is awesome and though we went for a birthday lunch on a Friday, it wasn’t packed to the gills. The menu is a little pricey, however the food is well worth it. The ambiance is lovely, definitely seems like a great date spot!
I liked the Gyoza pork dumplings and seaweed. The Tempura Udon noodle soup was overly salty and the Chanpon had little flavor or unremarkable overall. The large soup Udon did come with a generous side of Tempura though. I would avoid the soup next time and try something else.
Food was delicious but service was slow. This has pretty much been the norm at Basan.
Was disappointed with my meal. I ordered tempura shrimp and the Atlantic salmon. The shrimp was greasy and the salmon did not have much flavor.
In general, Basan is a very pleasant place for dining. It's bright, causal and comfortable. It's one of a handful of very convenient before-theater restaurants in Durham. My date and I like to sit at the bar where it is lively. There are TVs to glance at, a view out the window and bartenders to entertain us as they fix drinks. The Avocado Seaweed Salad is a great starter, beautifully displayed and very reasonably priced. The sushi is fairly creative and the chef is willing to adapt the ingredients to your particular taste. A favorite of mine, is the roll that is wrapped in cucumber and has no rice in it. Not all sushi restaurants offer this. Also recommended is the Miso Black Cod which is delicious. The plate looks lovely when it is presented with its artistically designed sauce. Only wish it was a little larger portion. Not enough for an entrée really. On our last visit, the service was a little slow and we were glad we arrived with plenty of time before walking to DPAC. By the way, if you let them know you are going to the theater, you will receive a discount.
Love the food, The hostess is very rude and non-inviting,
This service was great, but the food was bland. The really could have used more seasoning.
Best kept secret in Durham:) We had a wonderful dinner and the staff was super nice and very prompt!! Thank you for such an awesome experience!!
We arrived at 5:30 with a reservation-the host was going to sit us at a 4 top right next to the entrance to the kitchen. The place was almost empty. That set a bad tone but luckily our server was awesome. Food was great, service fabulous and really enjoyed it. Teach the host some common sense.
Great food and great service! Easy walk to DBAP or DPAC.
Good Sushi. Maybe a bit too much rice. Loved the Sake Flight. I recommend the Flight to taste the amazing variety that exists with Sake selections.
Nice staff and good food- and we made it to the show on time.
Food was good. Service was very poor. Very slow service. Took over 30 minutes to get our salads. Brought the wrong wine to the table. Asked for no avocado on my roll, but it arrived with avocado. Usually our experience has been better here. I hope this was a one off.
I only give 5 stars if the meal have been exceptional, so 4 stars is not bad, it is still a quality, tasty meal. Been here twice now, wouldn't hesitate in coming back a third time.
We were 2 guests, sharing 3 different sushi rolls, as well as a coconut shrimp starter.
The shrimp starter was pretty bland, and the main taste was the oil from the deep fryer. Wouldn't order this again.
Then we had the sushi's and they were all to my liking, especially the one with scallops. Nice variety in the veggies used, for example thinly sliced mango that was not ripe. Added a not-too-sweet mango taste and a bit of crunch. We also had a roll where red bell pepper were roasted and arranged on the sushi as if it was tuna. Nice touch, haven't seen that one before.
The waiting was attentive and friendly.
Unlike my first visit I found the service extremely slow
We waited almost 45 minutes for our dinner
It was wonderful. Our waiter gave us some valuable input on some sushi rolls to add to our "Boat". We so enjoyed.
