Baru Latino Restaurante Ratings and Reviews
The restaurant was empty and the ambience was okay. The food was very average. Nothing to get excited about. We ordered the plantains and they were interesting. The paella lacked flavor and there was no trace of saffron in there. We ordered drinks and they did not taste great.
Not sure how they got such a high rating??!!!
Went here for a date and had a great time. The ambiance and atmosphere is ideal for a date/romantic dinner. Not a very big space but the intimate nature lends itself quite well to the ambiance. Food and drinks were amazing! Even if we weren't having dinner we would go here for drinks. All in all, we had a great time.
The mojitos were spot on. Good balance of flavours.
The food was outstanding. The ceviche wasn't drowned in the vinegar/lime juice and tasted fresh. With the herbs, the flavour was accentuated very well.
The short ribs were another highlight, and had a bit more texture than the lamb chop, which was also quite good.
The steak and chimichurri was tied with the paella - both fantastic.
Between the five of us, the servings were quite generous.
Service was fantastic, though the place was a bit quiet. Food arrived much faster than we expected.
All thumbs up! Great experience.
The food was great, the ambience nice but most of all, I was impressed with the service. It was a Wednesday night and at first, just a few tables. The place quickly filled up as a steady stream of people walked in (no reservations). Everyone was attended to quite well and the 1 (one!) waitress handled herself perfectly. She hustled around, still smiling and sharing a word or two with each table. The bartender jumped right in and helped when he could, while still mixing a steady stream of yummy margaritas and mojitos.
We complemented the waitress on her service and asked if it was a usual crowd for a Wednesday night ? She said "No. If we had known, we would have had three servers on shift!"
Well done Baru!
We'll be back.
It is a great place with great service. When it is very crowded the noise level makes it very hard to have a conversation, except for with the person next to you. I would recommend turning down the music, or changing it to something with less of a thumping beat. Maybe some soft surfaces would help to muffle the noise too, although that is a design issue.
My favourite restaurant in kitsilano aside from my own (Displace Plug Here) . The staff/Management are amazing , it's a vibrant room and the food and cocktails are top shelf. Have the Ceviche, Taradito and the Diablo or Rum Negroni.
When my friend is in town, we always go to dinner/drinks here; favourite dishes are the Baha scallops and the assorted chips: plantain/yam/cassava chips with 3 dips. We also had the fish tacos, but this time the fish in the tacos was rather tiny. Service is always friendly and upbeat. The only negative thing is the noise level: was very difficult to carry on a conversation.
We went for dine out this year. We came a couple years ago and the menu was very similar so we were excited to return. Everything was amazing before, albeit it tiny portions, especially for $40 - but we were willing to have another try. Last time, the star was the short ribs. This time, they were incredibly dry. Our waitress was very attentive so I called her over and mentioned they were dry and could we have sauce or a new portion. She offered up both, and then only returned with the sauce. She said that they were all cooked about the same, so it wasn't worth giving us another piece to try.
Problems: 1) Don't promise something you can't or won't deliver. 2) Cooking something consistently is great for a restaurant. Unless it's cooking something consistently wrong.
The dinner came out to $100. We then had to get more food afterwards since we were still hungry, so while we were willing to splurge, $125 for one sub-par evening wasn't exactly what we had planned.
The service was friendly and the dishes arrived promptly. However, the short ribs were unimpressive and the lingcod was unevenly salted. More importantly, the food was overpriced. It felt like a $30 Dine Out menu, not a $40 menu. Given that the regular menu is also over-inflated, we will not be coming back.
