Baru Latino Restaurante
Service was very friendly and attentive but food was lacklustre.
We had lovely, attentive service, but the food was lackluster
Great food and service, would highly recommend...Went there On Friday night Everything perfect. Such friendly staff🥰
Such a cozy environment, we had a terrific meal. Great Ceviche and an amazing Pisco sour!
Our server was great and helped make it a memorable night! Thank you!
Not good value for the lamb. Very pricey for a few ounces of lamb.
Had the short ribs, ok, but would not have again.
Will try again, maybe we ordered the wrong plates.
One of our favourite spots in the city!
Unfortunately, either the chef, the management, or the owner has changed (or all of them), and the food is no longer acceptable. Yes, I mean what I say, no taste, cheap ingredients, absolutely disappointing. I hope that this is not another place where the ownership changed and only the name and decor is kept. The service was ok, but nothing special. We used to love this place, but won't go there anymore. It is a ripp off now.
Staff are outstanding. Service was prompt, drinks were delicious. Ceviche was fantastic but the pork a bit dry. Love this restaurant and we now know it does a great happy hour!
Excellent food and usually service much better but they seemed to be understaffed and so it took a long time to even receive a menu or a drink but this isn't usual.
Warm friendly atmosphere with appropriate level of latin music to make for a lively mood and still permit serious or not so serious conversation. Service was warm and friendly. Although its latin food it has a local feel. Comfortable, affordable, enjoyable...
I love this place - one of the best and friendliest in the neighbourhood. We had a series of small plates - all delicious, although some seemed a little pricey compared to my last visit. Our server was absolutely terrific - attentive and a great personality.
Fantastic food and service but a bit overpriced for shared plates. Would expect food to be $25-30/pp but it ended up $45-50/pp
Great restaurant and authentic latin food. It made us miss home.
We are coming back for sure again actually very soon. 10/10
Excellent service and food. It was.a Monday night so understandably quiet.
Having been a Baru Latino patron for a long time, it is disheartening to see how the quality of this establishment is declining after the original owners sold the business.
Food quality is not the same as before, and quite disappointing, although menu items have not been changed. And instead of the attentive personalized customer service that used to exist, the current staff are rushed and indifferent.
I don’t think I’ll be back soon, or as often as before. :-/
It was my 2nd time and I would definitely go back. Really enjoyable. They've got one of those menus where it's hard to choose as everything looks great!
We used to really love the food at Baru. It's still good, but not as good as it was a few years ago. The food is a little overcooked and less flavourful than it used to be.
We went after my son’s convocation at UBC to celebrate. We ordered several small plates to share, the server suggesting whether we should add an extra portion to make sure we all got a fair serving. All the choices were great, but the all-around favourite were the mussels and ceviche. We added a dessert, a very wonderful type of lava cake which is made while you are there. We were treated very well and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend the restaurant.
Varied menu, friendly service. Lots of street parking near by.
Excellent food and service and pleasant staff!
The food was really good. My friend and I shared so she could taste the Latin dishes they have. We would definitively go again. The restaurant was busy which tells you the food is good.
The Paella was closer to Jambalaya than normal Paella. The taste was good as it was.
It should not be advertized as Paella however
The atmosphere was excellent, loud but bustling and friendly. Our server Natasha was lovely and provided wonderful service. Every dish we tasted had intricate and enjoyable flavours. The beef tiradito was especially tasty, as was the arepa con chorizo. DELICIOUS!
Overall, our dinner experience was ok. A couple of the staff were great and down-to-earth, but a couple of others affected the meal.
First, to be greeted with “I don’t know how you got in” and “I can’t believe you could make a reservation”, but not followed up with something more welcoming had our session off to an awkward start. Second, to be told the restaurant is out of empanadas when we wanted them as an appetizer, but then have someone behind us (who arrived and ordered after us) receive an order of empanadas was disappointing. Third, the restaurant charges extra for cheese with chili but it was ordered without worry. The chili was served with no cheese, and when the server returned and we informed them of the missing cheese, there was an apology and a small serving of cheese was soon added. To then see the $2 charge on the bill for a forgotten, mini serving of cheese seemed to be in poor taste.
As for the rest, the drinks were unique and enjoyable and the meal, itself, decently tasty. While appreciated the intriguing set-up inside, we don’t think we’ll rush back.
It was quite disappointing other than the very lovely Irish server with red hair. Portions were small except for the appetizer chips which seems to have remained. Found out last night that the original owners sold it....too bad. The baked mussels were so salty - why serve them in a bed of salt, which sticks to the shells. The 'special' chicken in mole was pretty awful. The mole sauce was too thick, the chicken was overcooked, and it came with a small pile of sauteed bell peppers and a cup of rice. The short ribs were delicious but again, sauce too thick, and there was only 3 pieces of rib and modest amount of mashed potatoes. The polenta 'fries' - bad idea. Normal fries would work. The tacos were good value at Happy Hour, ditto the drinks, but yeah, it's a drag. I was thinking of going in and speaking to them as I'd been there many times before....
We just made happy hour on a Sunday night, so it was beautifully quiet unlike Friday's and Saturdays when I have gone a while ago. Our Irish servor was worth going for, but our dinners were superb too. My halibut was perfectly cooked and delicious, and my husband really enjoyed his ribs, a small plate but just right for a dinner for him. The chocolate dessert is a steal at $8, sweetly presented in three cups and yummies shareable. I hope this does not inspire them to raise the price. We will definitely be back.
I was so excited for my husband to finally go to the restaurant I had been raving about for years, I was so disappointed. He ended up cancelling his entrée after the first couple of dishes were a disaster. You can't mess ceviche up too much they ruined it, we could taste the fake lemon juice. The baked mussels horrible tiny little mussels with way too much seasonings. When I tried this restaurant 20 years ago when it first opened I thought it was amazing, my tastes are at a higher standards now but it really seems that the place is either under new owners or management but I will never go again. It was pretty empty on a Friday night, I was embarrassed that I had hyped up this restaurant so much.
My wife and I returned after 11 years to celebrate our annivarsary as this was a place we used to frequent and the restaurant looks the same which I am ok with, the service was very good, but the menu is nothing like before and that was a dissapointment. I do atill recommend it but I would have given it a much higher rating if it was like the good old days.
Service was great and very friendly. However the quality of the food has dropped significantly. The ceviche had very little seafood in it and should have been called an avocado salad. The fish taco was a very similar dish to the ceviche. We were very disappointed with our meal.
Baru is wonderful. The staff are always attentive and welcoming and food is fabulous. A Multitude of gluten free options too!
This is a great little neighborhood spot. The atmosphere is great and the staff is genuine and friendly. The fish tacos are amazing!
Great. Wonderful food. Excellent service!! We love Baru.
Excellent service!! Natasha and Miranda were friendly, attentive and fun. They displayed great food knowledge I’m Celiac and Natasha was very informed re. Gluten containing items on the menu and letting the kitchen know about possible cross contamination etc. That meant a lot to me.
In general all the servers made us feel like at home, starting from the greeting at the door until we left a few hours later.
I had the beef short ribs. Yummy! Could have used more mashed potatoes!
And bring back the life music, please.
Ok food, nothing special, we ordered tacos, empanadas and arepa. The arepa was the best from the three, I've had better empanadas before. Service was good, very attentive. I was still hungry at the end of the night, next time will try some of the larger plates.
The staff there are very friendly and I loved that their music wasn’t too loud so I actually could hear the conversation I was having. The astmostphere there is really lovely.
I bring everyone here for birthdays, tonight I brought myself :D always great service, always quality food and drinks. It was chilly at the deuce farthest from the door so I moved to the bar where the heat from the open kitchen was nice (also needed to move away from a very controlling woman at a table next to me, that’s a different conversation ha). Of course I’ll go back. Please keep a creme brûlée on the menu! It’s my favourite. A server was in training. Hope he does well. He was being trained well:) this review is all over the place. Cheers.
My wife and I attended Baru's for her birthday dinner. I couldn't have asked for a better evening. The meal being perfect of ceviche for an applie, halibut for the main course and a flan for desert and of course the sangria too. The atmosphere was laid back, jazz playing, which was perfect. I would definitely recommend Baru's.
The service was exceptional and the food was great . I would highly recommend checking out this restaurant.
Went in to dine out with my mom and both courses and the desert were amazing. I will recommend this to everyone even though I'm from north Vancouver I had to drive quite a bit. I'll bring my boyfriend next time.
