Too many tacos recently? Barlata's mix-and-match small plates will get you out of your food rut.
Service was wonderful! Food was flavorful and delicious! Would come back again— but order a different wine 😯🤔
Amazing food, great wine and a wonderful place to go!
Tapas places can fax in their performance. Not this place! We chose for Valentines... patatas bravas to die for, veggie paella that is really nice. The service was great, attentive with a smile.
We enjoyed our time at Barlata very much! The food and entertainment was wonderful and we can’t wait to introduce it to others and go back with friends. Service was good and waiter made great recommendations which we appreciated as it was our first time at Barlata. Definitely recommend!
Barlata is a unique gem even by Austin standards. Food is authentic, fresh and delicious. I love the baby squids wrapped around sausage, all the paella’s, and many other tapas. Meanwhile they also have a great brunch.
DJ our server was amazing and super knowledgeable about the menu. The food did not disappoint!! I loved the smaller portions so we could all try something
Great date night! We sat at the counter and looked over the kitchen. Great food, especially sampling the pixtios appetizer bites. Sunday and Thursday advertised as “half price wine” so we ordered glasses of wine (2 each) only to find out with the bill that it is actually half off bottles not glasses. Disappointing and overspent by $22 as a result, but didn’t ruin the night. Will try again and get a BOTTLE :)
We went to Barlata for brunch on Sunday. We've been here for dinner and were very excited to try brunch. Unfortunately, the service was pretty terrible. Our server was sweet, but she never came by once to check on us, see how our food was, fill our waters, anything. We made the reservation for almost 2 hrs before we needed to leave to see a show thinking this would be plenty of time. After being there for 90 mins, we still had only received 2 out of the 5 dishes we ordered. In fact, we'd been sitting there for 45 mins with an empty dish and no one came by to take it away or bring the next one or check on us. I had to ask for water several times. When I mentioned 90 mins in that we needed to leave in 20 mins and we still had 3 dishes that hadn't shown up yet, she was very apologetic but clearly wasn't paying attention. Then they all arrived out in a flurry, so we had to hurriedly eat through them before they got cold. The food and cocktails were amazing, except for a few issues where the cocktails were ordered incorrectly by our server and also an incident where she spilled a chunk of a cocktail all over the table.
When we finished, it took awhile to get our checks. Then somehow a $130+ bill was split into $15 and $30. We decided to say something and she went to go fix them. 10 minutes later, we are late leaving and still waiting for our correct checks. We were lamenting that we should've just paid them and left, but we didn't want to screw the restaurant or get her in trouble. After everything, I expected that something be comped on the bill, but nothing was.
The music was also incredibly loud and irritating. That type of music and volume level I would expect for dinner but not for brunch where there's only a few tables seated really and the restaurant is more quiet.
I really enjoy the food and drinks here, but this experience makes me think twice about going back. I didn't want to be pushy and we were late, but we really should have gotten something comped.
We always love our time at Barlata with our favorite server, Eric. We are regulars and are never disappointed. Great service of course and we tried some new items that were satisfying and creative. Thanks, friends!
Nice service and the food wasn't bad exactly it just really wasn't worth the price tag. Paella not like Spain at all.
Great tapas, especially the yellowfin cruda. The grilled sardine was perfect.
Food was amazing here. Ambiance was good but a little too crowded.
Excellent meal, and the recommendations of the staff were spot-on. We have always had a fantastic experience and try to make it to Barlata whenever possible.
Not impressed. Once the server realized we were not having cocktails or wine she basically dismissed us. Not once did she ask how the food tasted although she knew it was our first time to dine at this restaurant. The duck, ribs, shishitos amd pork belly were all lukewarm to room temperature. The beet arugula salad was delicious. Paella was lukewarm and soggy and not what we expected. We won’t be back.
Sunday brunch. Tapas were 4x better than last 4 trips to Spain. Paella looked fabulous too. Can’t wait to go back. Great wine list too.
It's difficult to find a Tapas Bar these days, it's even tougher to find a good one. But this one is definitely a keeper. We were in from out of town for the day so made planed to finish our trip by having dinner here. They were very receptive to us changing our reservation at last minute, greeted us, seated us right when we showed up. Nate , our server, was very helpful and timely. As we like to experience the real food at places like this, we continually asked his recommendations and to explain anything we did not understand. From the wine list to the tapa list, everything was authentic, and Spanish only. Nothing was Americanized. We enjoyed an appetizer, two cold Tapa dishes and two hot tapas dishes. We thoroughly enjoyed the experience and should we be in that city again, will definitely make this a go to place again.
We always have a good time at Barlata. The tapas are authentic and very tasty. The wine selection is good and we always fine a nice Spanish wine to accompany our meal. This time, we particularly enjoyed the cheese plate with a selection of 5 cheeses, bread, membrillo, and fig spread. The gambas al ajillo were hot and fresh and who can resist dipping the bread in the savory pimiento oil after eating every one?
As always the food and service are great here. The menu changed since my last visit a few months ago. I was sad to see that some items are no longer on the menu. Overall a great experience. My husband enjoyed the dessert and the birthday candle. It was a nice gesture.
We were so excited to finally visit Barlata!
Unfortunately it was not a good experience..
We had a reservation for 8pm, showed up on time and were seated right away.
Server was friendly enough but seemed indifferent to our visit.
The patatas bravas were delicious, by far the best thing we ordered.
The scallops a la plancha were tiny and cooked to a bland rubbery texture.
The top layer of the paella was completely dried out.
Server offered dessert after he presented the check.
sorry to be negative but that was our experience.
love the food....BUT unusually slow service and had to be reminded what we ordered....drink service was even slower than the food....waited 30 minutes for a second beverage....not enough waitstaff....and we got there relatively early when it was not crowded yet.....go/went there frequently, but will likely re-think this....
Service was slow and food was just okay. I probably won't go back.
Food was ok. Croquettes were bland, Serrano ham was not cut very well and just served on a plate- we had to ask for bread after we had already eaten some of it. Tortilla Espanola wasn't traditional. Wine was good- not very personal service- kinda like eat and leave. Will not be back.
I love this restaurant. The food is outstanding, fun to share, creative dishes, very authentic! The wine list is terrific as well. The service is always outstanding, everyone is very attentive.
Great experience. Food was great. Very fun. Lucas O was fantastic. Very attentive and helped in choosing dishes. He was spot on in all his recommendations. Will be back for sure.
New Year’s Eve
My wife and I went here for New Year's Eve. I had made reservations in advance and we were seated immediately. The service was quick and friendly, the food, while not super authentic, was tasty and prepared well. My wife is vegetarian and their veg options on the tapas menu was decent - not huge, but enough variety to fill us up with smiles on our faces. The cocktails we ordered were far from potent, but maybe that was due to the holiday? That was really the only downside - well, and the price was a little high as well, particularly given that tapas are generally very simple, small, and easy to prepare. But you can figure that out by looking at their menu ahead of time and owning the decision on whether or not it's worth your time. It was for me. Oh, and they have a small parking area as well which was a bonus.
Great, authentic, Catalonian food. A great selection of tapas and paellas. Very relaxed and fun place to eat.
When the first opened, BarLata's menu was outstanding and resembled the food served in Catalonia. As time has passed, the menu has become Texanized, to the point that the plates we came to love are gone from the menu. It was disappointing.
Duck leg was amazing. Rest of dishes were over salted. Timing and service were excellent.
The only hiccup was the hostess was missing and after standing for awhile, our serves at us. It was like he was the only employee working. Never seen a person work so many tables.
Whole family enjoyed fantastic dinner of paella and various tapas. My wife and I travel extensively in USA and since my wife is originally from Spain we try Spanish restaurants in towns/cities where we find them. Of the over 20 Spanish restaurants we have visited this is by far #1. A must try if you want authentic Spanish food. The owners are both from Spain, we have met them both and they are passionate about providing excellent Spanish foods. I highly recommend the jamon iberico, croquettes, gambas al ajillo, patatas bravas (best in the world), and the paella. Estrella Damn beer on tap is very refreshing. A wonderful experience that keeps us coming back several times a year.
Lovely food..they know their way around a fried potato..never had such good potato dishes. Service was very good. Just a tad pricey and parking was difficult.
I really enjoyed the tapas which are delicious, barvas, roasted hot peppers, delicate ones. It’s a perfect setting for late night outing.
Three among our party of four had recently been to Spain and pronounced the dishes flavorful and authentic. The restaurant is comfortable and quiet, making for easy conversation. Service is discreet and attentive. This was a second visit for two of us. There would be a 5-star rating across the board except for one grievously misdescribed dish. The menu describes Paella Barlata as consisting of saffron rice, chicken, seafood, chorizo, and vegetables. One in our party is not a seafood fan. When the dish came, all we saw were shrimp, muscles, clams, and perhaps squid, but no chicken or chorizo. We asked the waiter about the missing chicken and chorizo, which he said is "in the rice." If so, they were pureed first; there were no recognizable bits. So one of us was left eating only rice. In response to our criticism, our wait person said, "I get that all the time." Perhaps it's time to add bits of chicken and chorizo or change the menu description.
I appreciated the wait person suggesting the pork belly dish served on arugula rather than the other as I really liked it. I would like to suggest that particular server speak more clearly and loudly as he tended to mumble.
Staff was polite and kind but not well trained. Plates weren’t picked up, waitress left and we had to find someone else to get check. I spilled a full glass of wine while deciding where the food should be placed, and I spilled wine. It was replaced, but I was still charged for it. We had to ask for a lot that should have been 2nd nature to a server.
Excellent place to share small plates and try new cuisine.
If you make a reservation and want a booth, make sure you say so ahead of time. On a busy night, unless you have a party of more than two, you won't be given one.
We arrived early, however the host offered to ask a couple to scoot over a seat at the bar so we could grab a drink. Instead we decided to stand at one of the barrel tables. We ordered a drink and I'd say within the time it took to consume our drink our table was ready. The server was polite and attentive. Our food came out with great timing and we didn't feel rushed. Would recommend the restaurant, but suggest a reservation if it's a weekend.
This was my first visit to Barlata and I will definitely be back. There was a wide variety of tapas and they were well-prepared. We had a group of six, which was just about right to be able to taste every one. The cocktails were amazing. The kitchen was having a little bit of a mix-up the night we were there, so some of the things we ordered didn't make it until I asked for them again, but the waiter was very apologetic. I had my four-year-old with me and she was also quite entertained, although, next time I may take her only when it is a good temperature for sitting outside because she was a little bothered by the noise.
Always enjoy this place, but the paella was not as amazing as it has been at times. Still very good, just not excellent. Service is always very good.
