Barlata Tapas Bar Ratings and Reviews
All our food was quite good, with the exception of the flan, which was tasteless and disappointing. The caramel had crystallized into a thick impenetrable shell on top (like on a creme brûlée, but so thick it wouldn’t crack).
The kitchen’s timing and/or expo was off however. Twice we watched as servers tried to deliver our dishes to others tables. One salad arrived and but the other two salads arrived 15 minutes later.
We asked for bread three times, to no avail. THEN, as our server was clearing plates (same guy who nodded and said SURE three times when we asked for bread, but never brought any) he asked if we wanted bread to sop up the Romescu sauce left in the plate. Gaaaah! The restaurant wasn’t full.—no one had any excuse for bad timing and sloppy service.
A real disappointment, given the hype. Table spacing was fine, but the noise level frustrated conversation--but, hey, that's Austin! Authenticity? No. We spend time in Spain each year, and those tapas don't measure up to those in good restaurants in small villages. The service was very good: attentive, solicitous. The wine list had some interesting choices, e.g., a white Bierzo. But Barlata won't be on our "go-to" list.
Disappointing sums up the experience. I didn't go into dinner with high expectations but after hearing that Barlata has some of the best paella in Austin, it was a let down. The paella was extremely fishy, there was nothing fresh about it. There were sandy bits. This restaurant seems to be okay with being mediocre. After being asked how my food was, I responded "Okay. " The waiter responded, great! I'm glad you liked it! Honestly, if this is the best Austin has to offer it is worth taking a drive out to Dallas for better food. Barlata is not worth your time, money, and tastebuds.
It was a Friday night at 8, place was packed, noisy, but still we had a great time. As a former restaurant manager, I would have had the manager take a bigger floor presence, our waitress clearly was over-extended with the # of tables she was serving. Either expediters or a manager helping out would be better than just making everyone wait for the server. Still, we will go back again and again for special meals with family and out-of-town guests.
Food was okay, service was very poor. An hour and a half for 3 courses of food, then the waitress disappeared for half an hour. We have been to quite a few tapas restaurants and fully get, and really like, the slower pace of the tapas dining experience. This was not that, it was just poor service. We had planned to order an additional course or two but gave up after two hours and decided to go somewhere else. When the waitress finally reappeared, we explained our dissatisfaction and asked for the check. She did bring the check promptly but never came back to pick up the credit card. Waited another 15 minutes then had to find the manager to pay the bill. Probably was a good case for a dine and dash, not sure if anyone at the restaurant would ever notice. The only plus was the manager did comp a bottle of wine. There are many, many better choices for food in Austin, we won't be back.
Food...very good. Went for brunch and were the only ones there at 11 AM. In my opinion, there should be no excuse in an empty restaurant for two egg dishes and one paella dish to take 40 min. to arrive at our table....one at a time. If you can look past that, then take a shot.
Barlata lives up to its reviews and reputation. I was looking for a great environment with remarkable cuisine to help celebrate a good friend. Neither of us were disappointed. Our server/tapas Sherpa Juliet was knowledgeable, friendly, and treated us with the utmost kindness and hospitality.
Great food and service! It's mostly bar seating unless you make a reservation in advance and get a table. The menu is small bites so you need to order 2 to 4 plates depending on how hungry you are so it can get a little pricey. My dirty martinis were excellent! Over all great place!
We came to Balata on a Sunday evening and met up with a few friends. We had a great time. Great drinks and food! They do a great job with classic tapas dishes such as patatas bravas, stuffed piquillo peppers, pulpo (octopus), etc. Truthfully, everything on their menu is quite delicious. You won't be disappointed. As for service, it was very good. Our waiter was attentive without being persistent. He was also very helpful when it came to the more creative dishes on the menu.
Barlata never disappoints me. This experience brought my husband and two grown children to celebrate my birthday. I always feel we will order too much food, but it is always perfect. Spanish Gin & Tonic was tasty! My only complaint, if I were to offer areas of improvement, we asked that our paella order come after our "little plates". I was even reluctant to order with our little plates order to ensure that we had some time between courses. Our Paella (always amazing) came soon after our "little plates" so we felt a little rushed to eat everything at its proper temperature.
Went here as a date night and sat outside. Not too much noise except for street traffic but it was rather too loud for my tastes when I went inside to use the restroom. Food excellent though not as many vegetarian options. A little overpriced; great wine list. Waiter was perfunctory and tried to take our plates before we were done. Also, I'd say that even though it says business casual for dress code it's much more casual than that, esp. if you are sitting outside.
I have been here before & food was excellent. Was excited to take my husband & niece. I was so dissappointed. The appetizers: ribs good, ceviche good, croquetas not so good. Paella was so bad. It had a bad taste, no seasoning & super oily. Texture of rice was not great, to me overcooked. I am hispanic & I love rice & I make it all the time so I was expecting something amazing. Waiter was nice enough to take off bill & we got pork meatballs which were not good. Sorry but Not worth it. They HAD to have changed the Chef or cook that night was horrible. I won't go back.
My Friend and I went for my birthday, she's Spanish and I love real authentic Spanish food. Service was very attentive and efficient, ordered from the very large fabulous selection of small plates on HH menu plus a entrée Paella. Great flavors, nice casual or a bit better atmosphere! I will certainly go again and recommend it!!
As one of our favorite restaurants in town, we've been to Barlata over a dozen times the last few years. I've raved to friends and even treated a couple for their birthdays there. Sadly, service was inconsistent. Most of the staff was distracted by a large party next to us. That said, our server was apologetic about the delays and missed orders, though they were never remedied. The food was exceptional, as always, but we might hesitate in the future when deciding where to eat.
