Bar Primi is a corner pasta shop devoted to ‘primi piatti,’ the pasta course. What began as an idea for a small space in New York's East Village has since become an essential in chef and co-owner Andrew Carmellini's range: fresh pasta traditionally prepared and cooked to order. At Bar Primi, the main course is Primi Piatti. We use a variety of non-GMO semolina and specialty ‘00’ flours, organic eggs and handed-down techniques to create our menu of Traditional and Seasonal pasta dishes. We make more than a dozen different shapes and styles daily. This includes lumache and rigatoni from our imported extruder or ravioli and mezzalune cut and filled by hand. Family recipes and secrets are traded between Carmellini and Brooklyn-born chef-partner Salvatore Lamboglia who also offers a daily meat or seafood special in addition to a selection of shareable Piccolini and Antipasti, artisanal cheese, salumi and simple home-style desserts.

The agnolotti was good, but not amazing. The restaurant was loud (or maybe that was the other patrons). The portion size was quite small. If the service had been better, would have rated this higher! Wanted a quick meal and then had other things to do, but apparently my main server wanted me to sit there for longer... The other staff were very friendly. Service counts, people!!!

The aperol spritzers were exactly what we needed on a hot July day! Definitely try the burrata too, it was very fresh and light!

Very loud inside but we secured a table outside on a pleasant night. Great service. Food disappointing. Pasta and artichoke dish swimming in butter. Beets were water-logged. Enjoyed a pasta dish with sweet corn though. Good but not great.

The hostesses are always rude and very unaccommodating. The wait staff is typically nice however. They make the restaurant seem very exclusive and difficult to dine at when in reality it is not crowded. Not the first time I’ve had this problem. If the food wasn’t so good I wouldn’t go back. I hate giving my money to rude people.

The food was alright, but really small portions. The server seemed like he was only half there. Nothing like leaving a $150 meal and wanting to stop somewhere else for a snack. Cute place but don't go hungry.

Great atmosphere for informal dining experience - very buzzy, and good fit out with combination of booths and tables. Menu is short, but the pasta dishes we had were delicious. Comprehensive wine list both by the glass and bottles.

We had been looking forward to dining here again, specifically for the ricotta crostini appetizer, but what a huge disappointment. The hostess and server were both unfriendly. Our reservation was for 1 hour before the kitchen closed, but it took 25 minutes for the server to take our order. We order cocktails and 2 of the same appetizer. They were brought out on the same plate and the crostini was so burned it was black. We tried to eat it, but it was terrible. When we told the server, he acted like he didn't believe it was burned, so we literally lifted the bread up and showed him it was black. He was annoyed, but said he would ask the kitchen to remake. When he returned, he only had ONE appetizer. We had both taken 2 bites of the first one. We were charged for 2. The server was so rude we decided not to even order entrees. I never expected anything to be comped, but I should not have paid for 2 appetizers unless I got 2. Terrible experience.

I was recommended this place to deliver a high end italian / mediterranean experience from food to service however I did leave disappointed. Our server did not look interested, have knowledge on the wine that I asked about, nor the food recommendations, and we honestly felt rushed to the point that I held off ordering our entrees so the dinner could last longer.
The food was nice except the squid ink pasta was undercooked and there was not enough sauce through the dish. Overall the food was nice just not good enough that I would recommend this place or come back especially considering that it was expensive and not value for money.

We used to know a lot of servers and the manager because we went regularly. We were always really welcomed and even got a prosecco when we sat. Yes made us feel special and bring many clients and friends. But yesterday was a sad turn. We did t even get bread until we thought of it ( too late) and waiter was not very peppy like our old crew. We both felt like into finding a new neighborhood restaurant. Food always yummy.

It was a bit difficult dealing with this restaurant just because they wouldn’t seat us until each one of our party of 8 were present. Even when 6-7 of us were there they made us wait despite us wanting to order bottles of alcohol to drink at the table. Then when we were going to order wine our waiter was extremely annoyed that we couldn’t pick right away and kept coming back to check if we decided after only a few minutes. It seemed like they were trying to rush us out even when the restaurant was half empty. Lastly, we were a party of 8 and usually in nyc the gratuity is included but our waiter said that we had to call ahead and request that which we found a bit odd. Overall the service could use a lot of work but the food was very good. A bit overpriced for what we got.

We’ve eaten here many times, and this time the service was a bit rough. First, with a near empty restaurant we were seated next to a waiter station and cash register. We should have asked to be seated elsewhere. Next, our main courses arrived prior to our appetizer so we sent those back. No, apology from our waiter.....I doubt if they remade our mains so they sat under a heat lamp. They should do better.

This was SO disappointing! We love the rest of this restaurant group and this was just an awful experience. The waiter could not have been less helpful. I ordered a pasta dish and they brought the wrong type of pasta. Additionally as a vegetarian I ordered vegetable sides, none of which ever came. We asked the waiter - he informed me vegetables take longer to cook than the meal (come on) and when everyone else was finished they still had not come. He did not care, did not apologize, nothing. He did remove the wrong pasta and vegetables from the bill when asked to. Will never go back.

I've been looking forward to coming here for awhile, I received a gift card for the holidays. I was a little disappointed on the seating of the restaurant, they seated us at a very tiny table which seemed to be placed there for the first time as it was in the middle of traffic. I ordered much anticipated Froze, just as the reviews said was small but it was strong and very tasty. The food I've been looking forward to via their social media was not found on the menu. The stuffed meatballs though were amazinggggg, just as reviews have stated though, very small portion. I wish it was bigger. Our meals also were so small. My dish was a bit too spicy for me, the bucatini.. I wish the waiter when I asked him for his recommendation, that he informed me of it being so spicy because I was not really able to enjoy it. Besides the small portions and spicy meal, the main complaint was the noise level. It was almost unbearable. I would return, but not on a loud Saturday night.

It's rare that a cool restaurant has food to match the hip vibe which is why we resisted trying Primi for a long time although it's in our neighborhood. It was a big mistake that we're so happy we remedied. We've eaten there twice in the past month and think it is now our go- to place for delicious, slightly unexpected pastas, interesting but unfussy salads and incredibly good desserts. Do not miss the almond cherry panna cotta!!! It would be a fun place to take a group because of the friendly vibe and menu accesible to both the daring and the timid diner. The staff, in their mixed plaid shirts, are smart, knowledgeable and efficient. We are pasta and italian food lovers who have eaten everywhere and this place has jumped ahead of many old favorites.

Always enjoy every visit to Bar Primi. Took my partner and and friend and we had an amazing time . This is by far my favorite Italian restaurant on the East Coast. One slight hiccup during service but that didn’t deter us from having an amazing experience as always. Looking forward to coming back soon.
