Avenues Proper Restaurant & Publick House Ratings and Reviews
I had the ham & cheese sandwich, and it was a pretty hefty portion-could only finish half of it. The butternut squash soup my dining companion had was also very good. Ther server was friendly and accommodating. My favorite thing about the visit, however, was the piped-in music...classic rock--loved every song...really elevated the dining experience.
Enjoyable meal with great service! Had a salmon special and it was prepared perfectly. It was absolutely delicious. Service was helpful and friendly. I didn't have any of their beers, so I can't speak about those but my dinner partner enjoyed the spruce. Will be back!
Opentable let's you book in at 8:45 or 9pm, but their kitchen closes at 9. Called ahead to see if this was an error on the website but was informed that no, they do accept reservations up until 9 even though they close at 9. I asked if I would be an inconvenience if I came in at 8:45 (my reservation time) and was reassured no. Upon arrival staff acted like it was a huge deal and terrible inconvenience. As soon as I was seated I was told I needed to order because the kitchen was closing. Food was rushed and worse than fast-food, even though the bill was over $50. I get it, I understand it's annoying when you're trying to close and a couple walks in. I've been there. That's why I called ahead and asked if it was too late. I really would have appreciated honesty over rushed, unprofessional service. Won't be back.
We were expecting something very good and were disappointed. It's ok, but only that. The service was cursory and the food was average. (Though the beet salad was very good.) Given the difficulty of negotiating the Avenues area and the slightly disappointing food and service, I'd probably not return and wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
This place has really gone down hill in the 6-9 months. Helpful tip: don't fall for any special. We ordered the "Shrimp, polenta and mushroom" special that had exactly 3 shrimp and 0 mushrooms, and cost $28 (which we obviously should have asked about). Burger was dry as well. Seriously, this place used to be pretty solid but quality and product have dropped. Won't be going back.
I wanted to like this place, I really did. The location is great. The decor and ambiance is wonderful. The beer is tasty. But the food is mediocre, at best. They're trying too hard to be chic and hipster. Instead, tone it down a bit folks and focus on a simple menu with food that's well prepared. The menu is too complex and even the food that should be good was poorly prepared. The mussels were over done. The steak was chewy. All of this for an over-the-top price. Our waitress was slow with the drinks and even forgot one all together. If you're looking for a cold pint in the Avenues, I would highly recommend this place just for the location and the beer alone. But if you're going to eat, save your money and go elsewhere. My table of four was greatly disappointed.
I have dined a number of times at Avenues Proper. The food is consistently good, and the wine and beer list is not extensive but quite decent. Check out the high point beers made in house. Prices are a bit on the high side for the food but the ambience is very nice. It is next door to Hatch Family Chocolates too for dessert if you choose not to have dessert at Proper. Standouts are the veggie burger (without or with bacon) and the Pomme Frites. I also like the chicken and kale sald.
This is a nice little restaurant and micro brewery pub. We don't drink so I can't comment on the beer but we do eat. The food we had was very good, no complaints from anyone. The menu was different, I had a beet salad and meatloaf sandwich. My wife had the mussels, these were very fresh which actually surprised us as this is a small restaurant in Salt Lake City. They were some of the freshest mussels that she has ever had and we have eaten in many seaside restaurants. We will definitely be going back!
The food was pretty good, not much different from other restaurants in Salt Lake City though. The service was not great. It took a long time for somebody to actually come greet us at the host stand. We had 3 different servers throughout our meal (not sure why that was since it definitely wasn't busy) and none of them were personable. Maybe it was just because it was a Sunday?
It took 25 minutes from when we were seated for someone to finally take our order even though the place was probably only 60% full. We were never asked at any time if we wanted anything more than water to drink. We were seated uncomfortable close to the parties on either side, which the waiter gave far more attention than us. We should have just sat at the bar. It took about 50 minutes from when we were seated to getting our order even though other parties arriving after us were served much quicker. The food was good, but it was not good enough to compensate for the slow service and atmosphere.
I've been here a few times for brunch and really enjoy it. It's usually not too crowded for Sunday brunch, especially if you get there before noon or so. I recently reserved a table for brunch for 10 people and they gave us a nice big, secluded table that was perfect for our group. I've had the same server every time and she's the best! So attentive but not too much so, very down to earth, and great for suggestions. I get the chicken and waffles every time, just the half portion, and it's plenty of food. Also, pretty good deal on their mimosas. I wouldn't say the food is the best brunch I've ever had, but I like that it's easy to get to, lots of parking, and a nice open atmosphere.
We arrived at our reservation time of 5:15pm and we were seated immediately and brought water by the host. We had tickets that evening for a show at 7pm and figured our reservation time would allow for a relaxing dinner. After 15 minutes of nobody coming by our table, we left, went over to 3rd Ave. Bistro. We were seated immediately and had great service. This was sad. We've have been to Proper before and was very pleased.
