Avenue Club and the Bubble Up Bar
The first supper club in the US was established in the 1920s in Beverly Hills by Milwaukee native Lawrence Frank. In their heyday in the ‘50s and ‘60s, supper clubs were social hubs; comfortable places to gather and enjoy great food, drinks and company. Traditionally supper clubs were considered a destination where patrons would spend the entire night, from cocktail hour to after-dinner ice cream drinks. We salute that supper club spirit by serving up creative variations of classic food and drinks in an updated mid-century modern setting.
Fried Cheese Curds
Badger Club Amber beer-battered Sassy Cow cheese curds with house-made ranch
1/3 lb. char-grilled house-made salmon patty, spicy slaw, tomato, onion, cilantro, and chipotle aioli on a buttered brioche bun
Baked and buttered Atlantic cod
Very friendly service, food was outstanding, but as I had indicated it was a Birthday I expected a bit more than a casual “happy birthday hope your day is going well”. The offer of a drink or a dessert would have been appreciated.
The person celebrating chose The Avenue over any other restaurant in Madison, a lifelong resident celebrating 84 years!
I will return to The Avenue, but not for a special occasion. Some of the personal service that was present before this became another of the Food Fight acquisitions has now been lost in my estimation.
The food is excellent and the atmosphere so peaceful.
Service and food were great. Love the décor. I also really loved the grasshopper.
Excellent food and service! There are great GF options, and they are delicious. Oh, and the Brandy Old-Fashioned & Pink Squirrel were tasty!
Went for dinner during happy hour and it was perfect. Not too crowded so no problems Covid-wise so that was great. Patrick was our server and he was very friendly and helpful. Food was great (we had the walleye special and a turkey club sandwich and both were delicious). Tried a “pink pony” for desert and it was a great finish to a wonderful meal. Not our first visit to the Bubbleup and definitely not our last.
Bloody Mary’s were great!
The food was really good, it is definitely more upscale pub style food. There are heathy options as well.
Great variety of choices and nice ambiance - despite being Corona season.
Always a great meal! Their steps to socially distance and cleanliness were awesome, making us feel very safe and valued. Thank you!
When we visit Madison (from Iowa), we usually make it a point to visit the Avenue Club. It's been nicely remodeled in the recent past. We especially like the beer-battered cod dinner. The fish is nicely fried in the light batter. We also enjoyed the wedge salad on this visit. It was thick with tomatoes, bacon bits and blue cheese chucks. In the past, we also enjoyed the fried cheese curds.
Our server was very attentive and we appreciated her service.
The social-distancing was perfectly carried out in this restaurant and all the staff wore masks. We felt very safe eating here, as it was our first time eating inside a restaurant in the past 5 months.
We will be back!
Was nice not being anywhere for the last five months. Great service. Loved the flag system, should keep that after Covid, was nice letting the server know if wei needed a drink refill!!
Classic supper club feeling! My father and I go there all the time.
Amazing fish fry. Group of 4 of us each got the walleye and it’s phenomenal. Bachelor party weekend kicked off right
These guys are doing it right during the ensuing pandemic scare. Feels clean, safe, comfortable. Awesome job guys!
The website makes The Avenue Club appear to be an upscale urban supper club. It is not. Inside it was worn out and old. The food, service and drinks were all poor. I will not be returning. I encourage everyone to visit before booking a reservation to make sure you know what you are getting.
Avenue Club has figured out safe dining. Everyone was solicitous and attentive to our needs. Spectacular steaks and salmon grilled perfectly. I will come back for the rosemary butter alone! Everything fresh and delicious.
Awesome food, great service, and thoughtful social distancing! Plus, hand sanitizer stations.
This place was great! My partner and I came here for his birthday (our first outing in months) and they were great about everything. Avenue Club has social distancing and COVID-19 precautions down to a T. They had hand sanitizer, a color sign system to minimize contact, a 1 way path through the restaurant, and a table to put dishes on when they’re done, again to minimize contact.
The restaurant itself is insanely clean, beautiful, and contains all of the best parts of mid-century modern style. Our server was great, very friendly and attentive, as were the host and food runner. My partner had the cod fish fry and LOVED it, and I had one of the best Rubens I’ve ever had!! For some context, I worked in one of the oldest WI Supper Clubs waitressing and bartending for several years and haven’t found a replacement here in Madison until now. This place is the real deal! My brandy old fashioned sour was absolutely stellar- strong, sour, and loaded with bitters, exactly as it should be :) My partner’s ale was delicious as well. The drinks were reasonably priced and so was my meal. My partner’s was a tiny bit on the pricey side, but nothing too bananas, especially for a real deal fish fry in Madison. We will be coming back when everything clears up and will probably become regulars here!
I felt very safe eating at The Avenue and the food was wonderful!
The fries were especially delicious that night, extra crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It was our second time back for indoor dining since they reopened and they have excellent safety protocols in place on top of having our favorite cocktails in Madison and delicious food.
We really appreciated the steps they took to make us feel safe while dining
As always, thoughtful and attentive staff. Great job of social distancing and preparation for preventing COVIS transmission. Delicious food and lovely ambiance.
So happy to be eating out. again. Have always liked the Ave. Good food, nice people, nice atmosphere!! Parking, a real plus as well.
Great spot! Where else can you get fish fry and old fashioned's at 11am?
Followed all social distancing requirements. Server was attentive, without being intrusive. Great food - especially the cheese curds & stuffed mushrooms.
We always love The Avenue. For the first time ever we have one little complaint, the carrot cake didn’t seem to have cream cheese frosting as described in the menu. In our family carrot cake must have cream cheese frosting. 😉
Delicious, hearty lunch with large portions. Very much a value. Great location that is central for many when having a lunch with multiple friends.
Avenue Club is a favorite for fish and other menu items. We will be back, soon.
Great place to eat! I have had a lot of cheese curds around Madison, and so far, those are the best! Great drinks, great food, and you can’t beat the free parking! Definitely would recommend.
We (5 of us) were there for my husbands 84th birthday and we we had a VERY nice experience. He's a "young" 84! We have frequented this restaurant for many years, but the upgrade over the last couple years is fantastic. Love it!
This was not our first visit, we have patronized the Avenue for many years, prior to the current owners. The new owners and management have really put a modern spin the the Avenue, and we love it.
Food was really great! Nice quiet atmosphere which we prefer.
A little pricey wish they had a Senior Fish Fry. Can’t eat that much food.
Food was excellent. We had the cod and wall eye it was so good. Girl that seated us was very nice and friendly. Our server was very attentive. Over all experience was excellent.
Great Old Fashions and fish fry
Double date with another couple
Our table was ready on time for our reservation! Food was amazing!
The food and service was excellent -- the space, however, could be better thought out. I felt like I was having dinner with a party of 10 when I was really trying to enjoy a romantic Valentine's Day dinner with my husband. The way they have their seating set up does not allow for a private, intimate setting. I wish the space was more divided up and tables were separated further away from other parties.
Food was OK; meatloaf was good, crab cakes and risotto were meh.
Worst old fashion I've had in a long time. Other drinks were just OK.
Waiter was nice, but MIA for most of the experience.
Ambiance and atmosphere are great.
Same overall experience as the first time we tried it :(
Will give it one more try and then cross off the list if it isn't significantly better on food, service and drinks. We want to like this place, but you gotta have more to offer than just a cool atmosphere.
Walleye and cod dinner was saturated with oil. Potatoes had NO seasoning. We weren't offered drink refills at all.
VERY upsetting, this was our Valentine's day celebration and it was less than desirable.
Very good. Had resy's, seated right away, and service was quick. The drinks: Old Fashioned brandy press and OF whiskey sour, both muddled- one came out muddled but not the other, the press tasted sweet and the sour was a sour tart. 3/5. Fish fry: baked cod - perfectly moist and cooked. Good seasoning, but less amount than the fried cod. Fried cod - 3 medium portions, not too heavy/thick or oily for a wet batter, still moist and hot. I couldn't taste the beer per se, but it was good. 4/5 for both fish. Fries and baked potato were average. 3/5. Tarter sauce was excellent, and I hate tarter sauces. Strongest flavor was mayo, capers, dill, onion. 5/5. Coleslaw was more dry than wet, but it had a hint of horseradish - so creative! 5/5 Overall, really good, we'll be back!
