Aqua Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
The seafood and corn chowder was just excellent, an essence of seafood taste. Shrimp and grits tappas was very good as was the rack of lamb. My grouper was okay; should have tried the redfish. Friday was 33% off bottles of wine, a good inducement. The restaurant has an experienced staff and is consistently good.
We absolutely love Aqua! We ate here for our 20th anniversary and they made a big deal out of it, congratulating us, taking pictures, etc... Our server (Taylor) was very knowledgeable and personable. We had corn and crab chowder (delicious!) and goat cheese wontons (tasty) and then shared 3 small plates...all of them were excellent...seared tuna, crab cakes and fried oysters. Aqua is a terrific choice for any occasion and an outstanding choice for a special occasion. They really are serious about treating you well! (Oh, and their martinis are soooo good!)
Best restaurant in the Morehead City/Beaufort area. The hostess Kim gets to know you quickly. Food is better than any other restaurant (and there are many very good ones) in the area. Consistent quality. Good menu selections. Excellent wine list and hand-crafted martinis. Comfortable seating. All of that said, it's all about the food. The rest makes it an exceptional experience. Wine-O-Rama every other Tuesday night pairs great wine producers with their menu. Sample 4 wines with or without dinner. Great price and very well executed. The Aqua restaurant operates like a team of professionals - everyone helps make the experience the best in dining in the area. We now go there regularly.
Normally my favorite restaurant, but our preferred waitress was out, the “local catch”, grouper, was no longer available even though it was before 7 pm, and the other “local catch” (trigger fish) was just fair. So, not a pleasant visit for us this time. There were 7 in our group—which I arranged.
Decent menu selections.
Had an excellent corn/crab chowder. Ordered lamb chops. They were ok but nothing special. Veal chop was also ordered and was felt to be very good.
Deserts were a disappointment. Had a sampler. There was one flaming salty caramel ice cream dish. So much brand was added the flame melted the ice cream to soup.
Other deserts were barely ok.
Starting with the cocktails which were outstanding and special pricing on Thursday nights.
Appetizers were goat cheese wontons and shrimp and grits. Had the trigger fish special and my husband had the lamb lollipops. Can’t say enough about the whole meal. Only downside is they rushed us through the meal.
The restaurant is "intimate" -- facing an alleyway running parallel to Front Street in Beaufort, with screened outdoor seating as well as comfortable indoor seating. The hostess was very nice and comped us a free dessert (it was my wife's birthday, and they brought dessert to our table with a single candle and didn't sing or otherwise embarrass us:-). The food was outstanding, but we already knew that it would be -- our son worked as a sous chef there for a while and their chef is very good and creative (and we got good recommendations for things to try from their menu both from our son and from our waitress). They had a wide range of "signature" martinis, a decent selection of craft beers (many local to NC) and some excellent wines to choose from.
The restaurant itself is more in the "tapas" theme -- the idea is to pick a tapas-style appetizer, a slightly larger but still small entree, and if you are truly amazingly hungry you can double up on either of these or add a salad, but be warned -- their DESSERTS are huge, and you can top off a light meal there with a truly excellent dessert that will almost certainly fill you up the rest of the way. I got a chocolate cake that was moist, spongy, lightly glazed with chocolate, and served with two scoops of homemade espresso mocha ice cream. It was a meal in itself. My wife got their signature creme brulee, which arrived in a 20cm/10cm oval dish (that's roughly the size of a dinner plate) filled with perfect custard to the depth of 1 cm -- we're talking roughly 150 cc's of custard or around 2/3 of a cup, at least a double "ramekin" worth -- topped with a perfect caramelized glaze. They had a dessert sampler plate that would have had both of these and their third dessert (which we never got to -- they had me at the chocolate/espresso thing). It would be worth it to go just for dessert.
Note well that the food is not cheap -- dinner, drinks, tip for two will run you around $100 or even a bit more -- but worth it.
Second visit. Food very good & fresh. Staff is super. Based on 2 visits there my recommendation is: dress very warmly (or request outside) - like long sleeves, pants, gloves! So cold both times that it made the dining experience less enjoyable - and I though I had dressed more warmly on the 2nd visit. Luckily, Hosts has fleece blankets for fibers!!!
Although I have been to Aqua many times in the past, I thought I would try it again. The red drum small plate was fresh and succulent. We started with the Bento Box. Two of us got the salad and one got the shrimp and grits. All were good. We ended with the red drum and crab cake. Dessert was the creme brûlée and bananas foster. The service was attentive but not overly so. A great experience!
We chose the small plate special: red drum with rice, zucchini, mushrooms,
and roasted tomatoes in a light cream sauce. It was one of the best meals I've ever eaten in a restaurant! Even though the restaurant was crowded, the host did his best to find us a table that was not too noisy. The manager came by to check on us within 5 minutes of our being seated. We've been to Aqua 3 times now, and we like it better each time!
Aqua is Absolutely Wonderful! This is one of our very favorite places to eat and to celebrate special occasions. The menu is creative and the food is always delicious. Dishes feature local ingredients regardless of the season. The ambience is delightful and upbeat. The Wine list is extensive with Wine Tastings featured twice monthly as well as Wine Specials on Friday nights. Specialty Martini's are also a favorite. It is usually quite crowded, so reservations are highly recommended. I would not recommend this restaurant for small children.
When we visit from out of state Aqua is always on our must do list of restaurants. It is a favorite of locals and it never disappoints. Food is always excellent. Menu is not huge which is a plus since items on menu are thoughtfully prepared. The grouper special was amazing. Thanks, Aqua, see you next year.
