Appellation Ratings and Reviews
This was our second visit to Appellation. The first time we were with three other couples and we sat at the table in the front room surrounded by wines. The service was excellent, and the manager (I believe his name was Anter) was very attentive, funny and engaging, discussing the menu and wines etc. Our second visit was with another couple and we were seated in the main dining room. Our server was not very engaging or friendly (did not speak to us except to take our orders) and the service was slow in between courses. The food was good but they did over cook my "medium" burger. We had the crab dip, fries and the chorizo meatballs to start and the chicken thighs, spaghetti and meatballs and a burger for the main dishes. I'd still go back as its a nice neighborhood spot.
I really wanted to like this place but it seemed like extreme amatuer hour. The bartender was our waiter which led to very long waits for drinks, and ordering, which didn't make any sense, there were only 3 other tables occupied in the restaurant. The cheese plate i ordered was very good since the restaurant is attached to a cheese and wine store. My main course was another story it was horrible. Incredibly over cooked and uninspired. I will not be back unless it were for a drink and some cheese.
Excellent organic and specialty foods, well presented in an open concept space with a cool vibe. I appreciate the high quality food, and that the staff are knowledgeable about the ingredients and products. I learned about a few cheeses I had never tried before during the meal.
It would be great if the noise level could be brought down a bit.
I left a less than stellar review about 4 months ago regarding service, once again we had a less than lovely evening. The food is what brings me back, but guys, get it together. we were served a plate with a giant chip on the top, blatantly obvious had the staff attempted to look at what they were serving; would have expected an apology from the server, instead a replacement plate was dropped in front of me without a word. On clearing the table the server dropped my knife onto my shorts, again without an apology or let me get you some soda and a fresh napkin to wipe off. At over $100 for two people with only two cocktails should expect a more refined staff experience.
Appellation was fantastic as always. We went on a Tuesday when they offer retail price on the wine. We shared a number of small plates and the French Cheese Slate. They were so kind to accommodate our pregnant friend who could not have unpasteurized cheese. I highly recommend this spot and I will be back soon.
This restaurant has promise, if they can improve their kitchen service. Brunch for a party of four arrived 45 minutes after we sat down over a duration of 15 minutes instead of all at once as would be expected at a restaurant. One person's meal appears to have been completely forgotten by the kitchen staff. Crispy potatoes were inedible as they were burned, but server did remove them from the bill. Please note that the restaurant was not at all crowded during our brunch but server provided the excuse that the kitchen was "slammed".
Additionally, only some time after we had ordered did the server inform our party that what we had ordered, which was still printed on the menu, is no longer being offered at the restaurant.
Food has always been excellent, especially the appetizers. I had a spaghetti and (lamb) meatball dish which didn't knock my socks off , but this isn't an Italian restaurant.
It can be loud, but not to the point of making conversation difficult.
This time getting a mixed drink from the bar was very slow, and food was a bit been slow in coming - two hours today for 4 people and no deserts.
Overall, we have been there a half dozen times and will be back, just figure out your speed of service issue.
Normally this is a wonderful experience, however the restaurant had an off night. Many things forgotten this time. Our server forgot to mention what they ran out of until we ordered, he forgot our wine chiller, my garnish for cocktail number 2 was missing, and very delayed. The check was delayed, and not picked up by the server at all. We had to flag down the hostess to move things along; she looked at us as if she had no idea what we were implying needed to be done with it. The 10 or so other times when one of the owners was present things were different, perhaps when the cats away? We hope this was a one time problem, we really enjoy the place otherwise.
The Maitre D'and staff were tremendously attentive and helpful when I threw my husband a surprise birthday gathering. We were able to bring in a cake from a local bakery and they treated everyone generously while celebrating with us the entire evening-highly recommend!!!
Definitely not a first-timer here, but this was my first brunch (I'm a sucker for a bottomless mimosas special!).
Had a great time visiting with friends in a comfortable and relaxed setting! Food was terrific. Try the curd fritters and the grilled cheese French toast (yes they give the good ole grilled cheese sandwich the French toast treatment!). And for an entree, I loved the fondue cheese burger!
First time at Appellation, but it won't be my last! The food was wonderful and reasonably priced. Service could have been a little more attentive (had to flag the host down for coffee refill) but we weren't in any hurry, so it wasn't a problem. Overall, quite pleased with this place!
Always leave slightly disappointed. For the numerous times here, the service is always aloof and you have to ask for things multiple times, inquire as to whether the glass of wine or order of food is indeed on its way or they forgot to place the order. Compared to the Lakeview location the food is mediocre. Lamb meatballs are spicy and flavorful, other dishes lack any defining character such as the grilled cheese that's 80% bread with one glob of congealed cheese in the center and a thin slice of ham that covers up any evidence of there wanting to be more to the sandwich. I'll always frequent their lakeview location and now avoid this one.
Food, waiter and drinks were all great, with the exception that it took over 30 minutes for my friend to get her Old Fashioned. She was brought a glass of champagne during the wait, and it was taken off the bill, but still not really clear why it took so long.
A great spot in Andersonville this is an offshoot of Pastoral. Really nice selection of wines by the glass with good suggestions (and tastes) available from our server, Walter. Nice small plates to share by a sunny window facing Clark Street. Will definitely be back!
I was introduced to this place by a friend one afternoon where we shared a bottle of wine. We decided to return for an actual meal and had brunch. Everything was delicious and they were not stingy with the bottomless mimosas - which is always a plus. Def a new favorite place to stop in to when in the Andersonville neighborhood.
