Anthony's Fish Grotto - La Mesa Ratings and Reviews
My family has been coming here for years, it's a great place to get excellent Sea food and still maintain a "casual" experience.
Appetizer and Main course are always very good. Appetizer menu alone could Sub for dinner...
Just happened to notice they have added 4% SURCHARGE (it's probably been there, just didn't notice) !! THE CLAIM IS IT'S TO "OFFSET GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS"!!
B.S., IT'S THE RESTAURANT AND GHIO FAMILY LINING THEIR POCKETS!! (known them for years)
THIS POLICY WAS PUT IN PLAY TO OFFSET MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE AND NOTHING ELSE! THEY'VE BEEN IN THE RESTAURANT BUSINESS FOR OVER 50 YEARS AND HAVE SURVIVED EVERY MINIMUM WAGE INCREASE THATS COME OUT..!!
WHEN THEY TAKE THE 4% AND GIVE IT DIRECTLY TO THE COOKS WAIT STAFF I'LL BE HAPPY..
IF I TIP MY WAITRESS AT 20% AND ADD 4% TO THE BILL, I HAVE EFFECTIVELY TIPPED 24%..!! That's a big tip..
If you're adding 4% to my meal cost, where's my VALUE??
Will you PROMISE, NOT to raise prices for 8 years in order to remain "affordable" , probably not... Bottom line is...
END THIS POLICY NOW!!!
This is one of my favorite places to eat. The food is always fresh and the service is excellent. The pond and ducks add to the experience. Although I don't have a dog, I appreciate that they have an outdoor seating area for those who do so they can bring their fur babies with them. Overall this an excellent choice for dining. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Great Place. We were missing Anthony's since they were forced to close Bay location. We were also checking wedding venues for our daughter. This is a great location with nice view of their lake and fountains. Highly recommend for any meal. We were there for Sunday Lunch and it was very quiet with great surroundings.
This was our first visit to this particular Anthony's. We had frequented the past Anthony's often.
We found the food very good, however, we felt the service was rushed. I barely had time to eat only half of my appetizer when they brought the dinner. My husband and one of our friends also had that problem. We were a table of four. This dinner was over Two Hundred dollars and I'm not sure I will return even though we truly enjoyed the food.
My family used to come here for special occasions when we lived nearby some 55 years ago. Our dinner was just as I remembered, delicious, and the service was terrific. Thank you so much for letting me share part of my history with my husband. Anthony's is a gem.
Anthony's on the pond has been one of our very favorite restaurants. We have always loved their lobster. But tonight, the lobster was not up to par at all. So, why? A different chef, perhaps? We are not sure, but we were sorely disappointed. One of us has the sirloin along with the lobster, and it was hard to cut and not very good. So, our dinner was far overpriced for what we received tonight. The bar made me the wrong drink and our waitress did not notice it. She offered to take it back, but we refused, not wanting to wait. Her service was great, but she should have noticed that they made the wrong drink. We will go back, but if we receive the same lobster next time, or a not-so-up to par piece of steak, or a wrong drink, we will not return.
Going to Anthony's is nice now. They've remodeled it and it feels like your in Peoh's east. Fewer waterfalls and no ocean...but there is a big pond, outdoor water falls with a night color show. When the weather is nice (most of the time) you can enjoy al fresco dining for a reasonable price. Good service, fresh seafood...my son enjoyed his steak here more than at 94th Aerosquadron.
They've taken major steps backwards since they used to serve deep fried crab claws in the 80's. I ordered the shrimp Trio. The shrimp were small and flavorless, six of them had barbecue sauce on them as their sauce, the six garlic ones were equally tasteless. The clam chowder which is usually good at this place, had large chewy clams which I don't care for. The coconut shrimp were drowned and sauce and were soggy, though at least with the coconut they had some taste. The vegetables were Bland and tasteless. Pretty bad when your French fries are the best part of your meal.
We enjoy unusual and original restaurants like this with one of a kind decor from the mad men era. The restaurant is spectacular in a kitchy retro style. The seafood is in impresively delicious and reasonably priced. The cuisine is rooted in the mid century era, so you won't find anything fancy. Just good fresh food cooked well in the classic style.
Unfortunately the cooks forgot how important seasoning is when created a fish dinner. Sole was tasteless, salmon was overdone and watery (this usually means the fish was frozen) and the mixed vegetables were forgettable.
What once was a dining experience is now a short order cook kitchen. I won't be back anytime soon.
Went here for my wife's birthday weekend and the anniversary of our betrothal which actually was at the Anthony's on San Diego harbor which has closed down since then. The food and service were just as good as the other location so there were still plenty of great memories!!
Took my elderly Mom to Anthony's for her BD. We enjoyed sangria and view of the lake by our table. Several elderly people were also there for lunch, staff was very accommodating to customers with canes and walkers. Unfortunately I noted it was my Mom's B.D. on reservation , along with telling the waiter when we ordered drinks. No mention of her B.D. !!
We have been to Anthony's numerous times and this time didn't disappoint either. The food was delicious. We had the crab and shrimp cocktail and the wedge salad which we hadn't had before. The fish scallop and shrimp kabob was amazing. Thanks for again for a wonderful dinner.
