This is finest dining experience you can have in Saint Louis.
It’s a very old school fine dining experience that is no more expensive than any other fine dining establishment. I’m looking forward to returning.
This is the ultimate in old school fine dining. No menus, no prices, no problem. The service is impeccable and the food is top notch. This is the place for classic dishes prepared in tried and true techniques.
Do not forget about this St Louis iconic dining experience. You truly feel like you’ve walked back in time, when it was all about the classic dinner club. Al’s still delivers a fine dining experience. Our meal was perfection. From the escargot, to the perfectly cooked fillet and the amazing twice baked potato like you haven’t experienced in years. The service was outstanding in a very intimate setting. We were celebrating our son‘s 25th birthday and he chose the restaurant. My husband and I had not been there in literally 30 years and we will definitely return!
My wife and I go here every time we are celebrating something special. Staff is friendly and the food is fantastic.
This is an iconic spot in St. Louis and well worth the trouble to make a night of it there. It is old school in every conceivable way. The menu is limited, but everything we had was close to perfect. It is expensive. But it is an experience and one that is singularly unique in StL, if not the whole of Missouri.
Giving 5 stars because I cannot give it more. By far the best meal I have had in my life! The food was incredible. We went to celebrate our anniversary during COVID-19, but they took such great measures that I felt safe while there. By the time dinner was over I felt like we we were part of the Al's family, because they took such great care of us. It was wonderful. A must for a special occassion.
We had an excellent experience at Al’s! First, they are taking every precaution to provide a safe and ultra clean environment for all. My husband and I both ordered the filet Oscar for our entrees- the obvious choice!! Gary and James offered truly top notch service and made the entire experience a fantastic one. My husband and I have both traveled extensively and eaten at many fine dining establishments around the world and Al’s rates at the top of the list. We love this St. Louis institution. It was our first night out in quite some time, and we are so happy that we chose to go to Al’s.
Al’s is a St. Louis gem! Highly recommend for any special occasion.
Introducing our son to a stlouis landmark restaurant
Our dinner at Al’s was star-studded from start to finish. We sat at the sweetest corner table - The Sinatra Table. Frank actually ate at this table and there are autographed photos of Ole Blue Eyes on the wall. During COVID-19 the place was a bit empty, but the owners husband waited on us and mixed our cocktails. He gave us the history of the restaurant. Memorabile evening in St. Louis!
Had a fantastic evening - the Filet Oscar was superb! The presentation and service by our server and his assistant James was outstanding. The background and history of Al's always lend an element to the experience that can't be found anywhere else. Al's always has been, and still is one of the greats.
The ambiance and history of Al's is amazing and is the main attraction making it worth the trip into an otherwise abandoned area of St Louis City. Instead of menus, the server describes the meats with preparation options and ala carte sides. No prices are mentioned although they do ask up front who is paying the bill which is odd. Expect $100+ per person for a full meal.
Servers are very attentive refilling water and wine, but not iced tea, and very slow to bring additional bread we requested. Plates are assembled tableside for presentation. Unfortunately, when serving much difficulty was had serving dishes to the correct person. We ordered filets of various sizes and temperatures. The first gentleman served cut right in and shared bites with others waiting for their meals. Only after other dishes were finally served was it obvious the wrong steak had been served to him initially. This resulting in leaving only half a filet for the person it should have gone to originally (offer was made to share however was too raw for his tastes). The $19 side of asparagus consisted of 6 bland stalks, the carrots were a better value but were still raw, the potatoes were okay, one side dish was missing.
The next day, it was discovered a lobster (which we had not ordered nor received) had been added to our bill. My initial call went unreturned however they called my husband back immediately. While they did eventually credit us, it was only after they argued a need to review security footage to be sure it wasn't delivered to our table.
Wonderful birthday dinner with my wife.
It’s always amazing at Al’s! You can’t find places like this anymore with the service and food quality you get. A truly, one of a kind place that takes you back to the good old days with every meal. There is a reason it was one of Sinatra’s fave local spots. Class all the way.
Always superb.
A wonderful fine dining restaurant with a rich history. My wife and I go for every anniversary.
Very eclectic, historic and beautiful. An evening at Al's is more than just a meal, it's an evening to remember. Old world, superb service paired with some of the best food you can find anywhere. It's truly an evening to remember.
Excellent place. Old school full service
Melissa was an absolutely wonderful hostess and server. Her service was quick and she knew everything off the top of her head. The entire staff was far and above being helpful and accommodating. Everyone was regularly checking in and helping each other out. The food was out of this world. Makes me wish this was back home in Pittsburgh. Cant wait to come back again on the next visit to STL for work or play. Seriously an amazing experience.!
I had not been back to Al's for the last 15 years but it had not changed. It was wonderful and the waiters were awesome . Food was terrific.
We love Al’s. It is my favorite restaurant in the world. At least I rate it better than any restaurant I’ve ever been to.
Bob, our server, is the best! He’s been at Al’s for 35 years and knows everything.
Food is second to none.
Thank you Al’s for another special Valentines dinner!
We waited excessively to be served and later we were informed they were short staff. The table that was seated about 20 minutes after us, we were served with throughout the dinner including dessert, so they became the lead to our evening. Our food arrived modestly cool and the steaks were prepared wrong. It was easily noticeable the steaks waited for the attention of our server (Brenton). Why do they have a coffee maker in the dining room that has not worked for over 15 years, (informed by staff), I thought was bizarre. Dinner for 2 at $315 before tip would have been priceless, if the evening was executed as promoted by Al's. Al's is the last of the Laclede Landing River front and will soon turn its lights off.
Best of show! We loved it and loved our waitress!
Outstanding! I can’t believe I have never been there before. Highly recommend!
It had been many years since I had been to Al's. the passage of time did not diminish the "Al's experience" in the least.
This is the second time my wife and I have been to Al's and it was fantastic once again!! We brought some friends with us who had never been before and they loved it as well. Atmosphere, food, and service we're exceptional once again! Thank you for another excellent dining experience!!
Delicious food, professional service, and a dining room that is historic and inviting. Don’t miss this St Louis treasure.
Bob, our host was awesome as we’re the rest of the staff! Very attentive but not hovering. The best dining experience ever! The food and wine were unsurpassed taste and quality.
Service was amazing and the steak was perfection! I would rate this as the best restaurant in St. Louis!
What an amazing evening and dinner! The steak was perfection, flavorful char on the outside, cooked to the right temp, tender and juicy. Twice baked was colossal, loaded and cheesy. Lobster tail was delicious, tender and buttery. Both the lobster bisque and veal meatball soups we some of the best we have ever had. Staff is attentive and happy to share the restaurant's storied history which adds to the whole experience. Al's is hands down the best around, we will be back.
We expected a fine dining experience but were greatly disappointed. $180 per person got us mediocre lobster bisque, flavorless creamed spinach, glass of sweet Chardonnay (house wine) and tough lobster tail. The filet was excellent but the bearnaise sauce was reheated and lumpy. Apple pie? Puff pastry with a few apples barely warmed.
The decor, from a time long past, wasn’t enhanced by dusty chandeliers or the corroded faucets, and peeling wallpaper in the ladies restroom.
We won’t be back.
Al's Restaurant provides a very unique dining experience.
The service is excellent and the food is fantastic. I think it may be the best meal that I've ever had.
Every thing was done first class!
I had not been to Al’s in over 10 years, maybe 15. We all were looking forward to it. One of us had the pork chop and said it was excellent. The rest of us had the 12oz filet done Al’s style with prosciutto, cheese, and bread crumbs. 2 of these were supposed to be medium, mine was supposed to be medium rare. Mine cam out slightly below rare, and the others were at most rare. The wine service needs to be modernized. We brought on bottle of wine and purchased another. The serving staff completely filled the wine glasses and emptied both bottles at one time rather than filling the glasses half way and revisiting the table to pour more wine as needed. I am not certain that I can convince my dining partners to return and I am not sure that I will either.
Another outstanding meal and experience at Al’s.
I ordered the Steak Diane, which is no longer on the “menu”, but the chef accommodated my request as always. It was wonderful. Best steaks any where.
Service was impeccable. We absolutely adore this place. Always our first choice when we visit St. Louis.
Appreciate the kind words, we always enjoy when you are in town. It's our pleasure to serve you. One of the most rewarding benefits is getting to know our guests and building long-standing relationships. We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Birthday Celebration
Thank you for celebrating your special day at Al's! We appreciate your business and great review!!
I loved Al's! This is not a place you go to "grab a bite". It's a special occasion place. The service was wonderful. Our server did everything he could to accommodate and make sure we had a great time. Food, especially steak, was exceptional. It is a classic for sure!
Thank you, Jessica. It was our pleasure to serve you and we appreciate your great comments! Cheers to your anniversary - we hope to see you again in the near future.
The staff was wonderful! The restaurant left a lot to be desired. In desperate need of remodeling. The appetizer was delicious! The dinner salad was very good. The main entree was ok. Ala cart asparagus had no flavor.
First impression of the exterior was really disappointing. Old, run down building with a parking lot that had a dry erase board for a marker sign.. really??? Inside it felt like you slipped into a 1950’s era mafia hangout with the low ceilings and dim lighting. Wood work was exceptional, being hand carved by local monastery monks. Server was a bit air headed and giggly, completely unprofessional. Lobster bisque was bland with only a small piece of lobster, salad was ok, steak was tender and temp was correct. Info says it was voted in the “Top 10 steakhouses in America “, we just don’t see how. This was a Friday night and we were only one of four couples in the place. How can an establishment survive? Overall I’m glad we tried the place, but for my money I’ll go to Porter’s or Ruth’s Chris.
