For years, El Chile Group owner Carlos Rivero has dreamed of opening a Mexican Seafood concept, unique to Austin. After a recent excursion to South America to join his sister on a culinary tour of several countries, Rivero had a revelation – timing was perfect to make his seafood dream a reality. Already positioned on South Austin’s burgeoning restaurant row, Rivero decided the building at 1816 South 1st St (formerly El Chile #2) was the ideal space to house his upcoming project.
Alcomar features cuisine from co-executive chefs Alma Alcocer (of El Alma) and Jeff Martinez (of El Chile). “Alcomar” is a conflation of the two chefs’ last names, but also speaks to the coastal aspect of the menu with “mar,” the Spanish word for “sea.” Together, Alcocer and Martinez have devised a menu sampling regional flavors, ingredients, and dishes from each of Mexico’s coastlines.

Alcomar Ratings and Reviews
This was my second time dining at Alcomar. Both times I loved the atmosphere and thought the food was delicious. It is a refreshing fusion of traditional Mexican dishes and seafood — something truly unique. The atmosphere is intimate enough for a romantic date or lively enough for dinner with friends. The interior is decorated with lightly stained wooden features and white accents. My only complaint is that I wish our waiter were more welcoming. I would sometimes feel as though we were hurried to order our drinks and food. Overall, it was a fantastic experience and would certainly recommend it for the unique atmosphere and menu.
This place might be my new favorite brunch spot! The watermelon mimosas were delish, along with the chilaquiles with the crab. The only thing that would have made it better would be the potatoes and green salsa that came with the pork dish... mmmm oh my gosh. I'm not even that into beans but theirs were soo good. The 'te amo' drink was the bomb. The only thing that wasn't perfect was that we were placed at a table right by the kitchen.
Last minute reservation at 8:00 on a Friday night. I was surprised the place was only half full. We loved the decor and atmosphere, our server was great!, and our meal was outstanding. I had a trio of tacos, our server chose the combination for me and all three (steak, grilled fish, shrimp) were delicious. The beauty of those tacos was that each one has its own toppings, it wasn’t just the protein that was exchanged. And they were bigger than I thought they would be, two would have been plenty if you had a starter. My husband ordered the lobster enchiladas and ate every bite on his plate, he said they were delicious. We shared a chocolate tart with pink salt and Mexican ice cream, it too was delicious. We will go back. I wish the place would have been packed for them for a Friday night. They get five stars in every area for a dining experience.
Excellent service. Our waiter was friendly and timed every part of the meal perfectly. The host at the front wins the award for the night for telling the large party behind us to be aware that there were other guests in the restaurant. This was my second time there, and I will be back!
Alcomar did not disappoint. From our appetizers to each entree, the food was outstanding. The service, including the complimentary valet staff, was incredibly friendly and very attentive. We have already recommended to other friends and Alcomar will definitely be on our list of faves. I gave it 4 stars for value only because the drinks were a bit on the higher end so enjoying more than one a piece when there are 4-6 in your party can get pricey.
My wife and I celebrated our anniversary. The staff was very attentive and engaging. We decided to switch seats once we ordered and the staff was really flexible. The food was delicious. I had the steak salad and my wife had the scallops. The dessert of sopapilla cheesecake was the perfect way to end the meal.
The folks at Alcomar are awesome!! The food is excellent and the drinks are great! We are definitely going to make this one of our regular restaurants! Also, it's far enough south to avoid all the drama of downtown without sacrificing quality and atmosphere.
I went to Alcomar first for a margarita break during a shopping trip on South Congress, then 2nd to come back for brunch because the menu looked so delicious! I ordered the chilaquiles with crab and it was everything I could have wanted. Also ordered the civiche - amazing!
Heard about Alcomar on TV and gave it a try for lunch. The food was excellent. Service was awesome. The young man gave great suggestions for our vegetarian and everyone else. Each person ate something different and each of us enjoyed our meal. Will definitely return.
There are not enough great words for delectable for me to rain upon Alcomar. I LOVE this restaurant! The menu is chock full of unique, FRESH offerings. I am always challenged, because I want to go back to the great taste I enjoyed the last time, but then I miss out on all the things I haven't tried. BEST option...come with friends who like to share, and order up! Do NOT skip the roasted butternut squash in mojo butter. To Die For. Every wood-grilled seafood option is worth a mention. And the Ceviche Verde is a part of EVERY meal I've had there. Another one I just can't do without.
THANK YOU ALCOMAR for keeping this Austinite VERY happy!
