Great place, excellent drinks, service outstanding.
Four of us were looking forward to dining indoors for the first time in 18 months and then attending a limited attendance concert at Herbst Theater. We indicated on our reservation for 6:15 that we had to complete dinner by 7:30 in order to go through the pre-performance Covid-protocols. We also told our server and the wine steward that we had to complete dinner by 7:30. Two of us ordered the Prix Fixe; two ordered a salad and an entree. The first course was served around 6:40 and was delicious, especially the farmers market salad and the vegan tomato soup. Then we waited and waited for our entrees, finally signalling to another server at 7:05 that we had not been served. She assured us the entrees were on their way. We weren't served until 7:15 and ate so quickly that we couldn't enjoy the salmon or lamb shanks. We asked for the bill at 7:25, thinking we would not be charged for the two desserts we'd ordered but had no time to eat. Instead, we got the bill and a paper bag with two fruit sherbets and were out the door. Of course, we weren't allowed to bring food into Herbst and we left the by then melted sherbets with the person who checked out vaccination cards. Not a good experience at Absinthe!! We understand that it has been difficult to hire or re-hire staff after the pandemic lockdowns; nonetheless, everyone who served us knew about our time constraints and unfortunately failed to respond to them, thus denying us the pleasure of a relaxed dinner.
Wonderful food and great service. It's obvious the staff is happy to be back open and we were thrilled to dine at this excellent restaurant. We felt very welcome and the food hit the spot!
Great post-pandemic birthday spot. The entire family really enjoyed.
At this point there’s no excuse— Absynthe is a shell of what it was before. The rotating menu is not my thing, because I loved the menu before. The food was just fine, and service was lacking.
Overall not happy with this new Absynthe.
Absinthe is one of my favorite restaurants in San Francisco. Approachable menu, and the staff is always lovely. The food is always perfection and I always leave there happier than when I entered.
The chefs need to up their game to pre pandemic creation and prep. Do not accept old and cold Frits!
A Covid-safe restaurant observing all the recommended precautions.
The food was fresh and very delicious with excellent service and reasonable prices. One of my favorite places and the new chef does magic in the kitchen
Very beautiful ambiance. Gave the option of putting in an occasion and one of them was like a date night which what my SO and I were going for. I don’t know if it influenced it or not, but they gave us an intimate booth which we loved. The food was beautiful; we had a couple oysters as appetizers, she had a Cesar salad which had a fried egg on top that complimented the creaminess of the salad dressing, and the steak from the steak frites dish was so rich and cooked to perfection. Cocktails did not disappoint, nor did the desert. 10/10 would go again.
Haven't been here in years... kind of like the old Yogi Berra saw, "no one goes there anymore, it's too crowded."
Glad I went tonight! Everything was perfect. Gracious maitre d'. Nice socially distanced table.
Food was extraordinary. I was celebrating a birthday so started with caviar. Smartly presented, and I love fish eggs.
We had the Caesar salad, which was tasty. My partner had the bone marrow, which was exquisite! So rich and flavorful.
My steak frites was also perfect. I prefer the cheaper bavette cut (more "authentic" and I find filets sometimes lacking in taste). This cut was packed with flavor and perfectly cooked.
I relied on the bartender and waiter to bring me accompanying wines because I was the only one drinking. They did not disappoint. Perfect accompaniments.
The espresso really capped the night for me. And the waiter and busboys were attentive without being intrusive.
One of my favs! Consistently great food and service.
The food was wonderful. All four of us were very happy with our meals. The serving staff were warm and welcoming. It was sometimes hard to get their attention, but, since we were there for lunch on the first day they had opened to indoor dining, the restaurant may have been short-staffed. All the servers were, however, very gracious and accommodating.
Once traffic on Hayes died down, we could visit. We opted for outdoors, so noise couldn’t be helped. The private table area was well protected and lovely. My roast chicken with its polenta, mushroom, asparagus accompaniments was delicious, so was my husband’s steak frites.
What a delightful experience! We were among the first to be able to eat inside and it was an honor. Thanks, Absinthe, for a memorable and delicious meal!
Let’s just say I hope when everything moves back inside we will have a better experience than we did, menu was not the norm, wait staff very absent throughout and food was way over salted...
I don’t love sitting outside, but they have tried real hard to make it as nice as possible. But the food ... I have never had a better omelette in my life. The food was simply the best. Bellinis wax really great too!
Great night out after Van Gough show!
Absinthe made a fine effort - my wife and I went for our first dinner out since the Covid pandemic, and our anniversary. We were seated outside - I had expected a patio and got a parking spot on a busy street! The cocktails were delicious. The gouda appetizer was good, my soup quite good, I really enjoyed the lamb shank. My wife said her steak was too salty. The service was attentive and good. A for effort, -1 star for the salty and not awesome meal for my wife. Overall, I'd recommend for a nice night out. We'll probably go back.
Absinthe has always been one of my favorite spots in San Francisco. I am very happy to see they started full service again with the same great service and ambiance and even better food!!
Delicious food, very generous portions and great service!
Because of a horrendous traffic jam, we arrived -- totally frazzled -- 45 minutes late for a pre-concert dinner. Absinthe said relax, we'll take care of you. We had a lovely, albeit foreshortened, dinner and arrived at the concert hall in plenty of time. The food was great as well.
We will note on Sunday evenings, oysters may not be available. The only reason we came to Absinthe was for oysters, and we compromised with other choices, which were delicious but not what we wanted.
Also, we had to ask the wait staff to bring over a heater as we were seated at the very last table of the Gough street tables and it was very cold. Understandably, because of SFFD code requirements, the heater wasn't very effective because it couldn't be placed closer to our table. Other restaurants have better outdoor seating accommodations with heaters in place.
Thank you dinner for our dear friends!
Food was delicious...outdoor “booth” cozy...cocktails colorful and a splendid evening!
Felt well taken care of, only mishap was slanted smallish table and a spilled water glass.
Lovely parklet, attentive but never intrusive service, delicious food. As always, the French onion soup was perfect and the arugula salad was a surprising blend of textures and flavors. My bavette steak was tender and tasty. Michael’s leg of lamb was flavorful.
Salmon was done perfectly ! Service is always good and even though we ate outside, the noise level was not bad. Highly recommend !
Outdoor pallet on Hayes was ideal for safe dining, as well as adequately protected from the elements. Only caveat was the occasional loud bus or motorcycle, but benefits far outweigh any temporary annoyance.
The staff and food were excellent. We arrived early for our lunch reservation and they were able to seat us immediately. They were still only seating at their outside tables. The tables were comfortable and the ambiance was pleasant and sheltered from the windy day. The only drawback was the occasional loud truck or bus passing next to us that momentarily halted conversation due to the noise. It is nice that they are open again as it is one of our standby favorite places to eat in the area.
The food was phenomenal! The staff was amazing. My cocktail was divine. It was incredibly windy that night but we had fun nevertheless.
Very good place to dine after the Van Gogh exhibit.
Outdoor only. Service a little slow and no heaters that I saw. Food was good, not great, Limited menu, Better when we can eat inside and have the full menu, A bit pricey, but good wines by the glass.
Excellent food. Great service. Good COVID protocols and outdoor seating was very well set up!
Staffs follow public health safety measures. Food was yummy! We ordered buckwheat pancake for our kid. He loves it. I had an omelette and my husband has steak & fries. Steak cooked in perfection. Meat is very fresh. We also order steak tartare. Yummy!! Cocktails are also my favorite!! Galapagos & Bellinis!! Love it!
Food and drinks were great! Server was attentive. Only complaint is that the patio heaters were not there upon arrival and it was a bit chilly.
Our event finished earlier than we had planned, so we stopped by the restaurant an hour before our reservation to see if we could be seated earlier. There were no tables available, but the host said he would text us as soon as a table was ready. We took a pleasant stroll down Hayes and got a text within 30 minutes that a table was ready!
The staff was attentive and accommodating. I had the onion soup and the lamb shank. Both were delicious.
I will definitely bring my wife and guests here again.
Wonderful food and great service. We enjoyed the outdoor seating which is semi-private with heaters.
We always love the food at service at Absinthe. Their outdoor setup was delightful -- private and pretty quiet, with great heaters!
We enjoyed the Mother's Day Prix-fixe. The only minor flaw and a note for your reference was that the optional dessert for the pot-de-creme was supposed to be $8, and we were charged $9. No big deal; we're happy to support Absinthe!
The roast chicken was dry. The duck confit was more like duck bacon. It was hard and almost too salty to eat. Service was confused about a lot of things. I would like to support restaurants now, but it seems they are having difficulty getting things up and running correctly. Considering with a 30% tip, this was $174 for two people, and the food was pretty terrible, it wasn't anywhere near worth it.
Been coming here since 2018 and I still love it! Sad that they don’t serve the pretzel appetizer anymore. Hope they’ll bring it back!
We had a great time. I had the steak frite and banana pudding. It’s was delicious !
From the greeter to the bartender to the server all amazing staff!!! Wonderful experience!! Food just made it even more of a beautiful experience!!! It’s one of our favs!! So glad they made it thru the pandemic!!!
