Absinthe French Onion Soup
avocado creme fraiche, citrus-soy vinaigrette, poppyseed crostini
quail egg, shallot marmalade, dijon, grilled Acme levain
This is one of our Favorite places to eat in SF. The food is always great, our service is incredible, she was very attentive even though she had a lot of tables. All the other staff work well together. We never had our water glasses empty. We both had the sausage hash and started with the French onion soup which is always great.
Delicious as always! And great cocktails.
With so many restaurants struggling to maintain quality food and service because of the difficulties brought on by the pandemic, Absinthe continues to provide both quality food and outstanding service.
Staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating. Highly recommend the onion soup and fries!
The French Onion soup was marvelous. The burger was a major disappointment and way below their usual standards. Very mediocre. I asked for med rare. They couldn't do it because instead of on large patty, it was two thin ones and cooked to medium. As a result, it was not juicy in the least and what was on the bun was very blah and uninteresting. Really, I have had way tastier at a fast food place. Worse yet, it cost $25! Perhaps it was excellent beef...............but I certainly could not taste anything special at all. My advice to a usually stellar restaurant? Drop it from the menu or kick it up many, many notches.
Enjoyed the unique and the traditional items on the menu very much. We are never disappointed when we eat at Absinthe.
Delicious, comfortable, safe, fun. Staff were so nice. It was a delightful lunch.
Having flies buzzing around our table plus having a completely over cooked croak madame kind of distracted significantly from the dining experience.
The food is amazing! We had oysters, French onion soup, steak tartar, steak, and salmon. Every single item was delicious and great for our date night. Will definitely be going back.
We had a small birthday celebration at Absinthe. Nice atmosphere, outstanding, friendly and gracious service and excellent food.
We got there early after the symphony matinee; they were serving an abbreviated menu. We ordered 2 french onion soups, followed by a burger with "extra crispy" fries, all of which used to be wonderful at Absinthe. The onions soups were almost as good as always, but the burger was a shock. Instead of the fat juicy burger we remembered, we received 2 thin patties stacked on top of each other, which obviously could not have been medium rare, as we had ordered. The fries were limp and tasteless. The manager came over and was wearing a stained all-over sportcoat, which enhanced the story of slipshod quality. The manager blamed it all on lack of help. Too bad, Absinthe used to be one of our favorite restaurants in the Civic center.
Absinthe food is generally outstanding. It was NOT last night. We hope it will change back to the excellence we remember.
We dined outside, and it was chilly, but the heating lamp helped some. It was a bit hard to get attention but when it came, the staff were very friendly and the food was excellent.
Excellent customer service!
Superb food, great atmosphere. Been a customer for 15+ years and looking forward to the next 20!
The food was excellent. Highly recommended.
Was truly a beautiful evening to be outside, it was lively and warm—eating outdoors was especially beautiful last night. The savory beignets were a very indulgent starter with the French onion soup and Crudo. We sipped wine and ordered more dinner, the burgers and Cassoulet. All was just wonderful. Absolutely lovely evening
Classy old-time San Francisco venue. Caesar salad is as good as it gets.
We dined outside on a beautiful warm evening
The menu is fit for Foodies, creative and over a wonderful blend of flavors. The wine offerings by the glass is short but really quality wines from CA, France and often other regions. Did not have time for desert, but the menu was very tempting.
I have never been disappointed Absinthe Brasserie & Bar. I have had private events, lovely dining, and special occasions all outstanding.
Great dinner with family visiting from out of town. Burgers and fries for the kids, and a great selection for people with dietary restrictions.
Sat at the bar and had wonderful and attentive service. The food was fantastic. We ordered the bone marrow, oysters, foie gras, and the cheese plate. Loved the herbs with the bone marrow but the foie gras with strawberries really took my palate to the next level of appreciation. Glad to see this restaurant is thriving and still keeping the standards high. Can’t wait to come back
Top notch service from start to finish. Nice ambiance, good drinks/wine. Food was 50/50. Heavy. The butternut squash soup, caesar salad, branzino entre, and chocolate pot de creme were pretty good. The burger and vegan dish were meh (again really heavy) - We noticed that each dish maybe just had too much going on? Like a flavor explosion in not the best way?
I would likely go back for drinks and appetizers! Nice spot.
Standards here have definitely fallen since COVID. The brioche with the scrambled eggs was burned as was the levain with the steak tartare. The front door was open so there were pesky gnats buzzing around our table during the meal. However, the
service was exemplary, from the maitre d' to the wait staff. Here's hoping things improve.
It’s fine, not what it used to be, food is a little uninspired at this point, great location
The Prime Rib (I forget what it was called) was fatty with large bits of fat that needed to be cut out and the Chicken dish was uninspired. Tasted pretty plain. So food though expensive tasted plain. I don't mind the cost if the quality of the food is good.
This place also has table that are pretty high with respect to the seats which are low (for 5'-7"-9" people), which means elbows are up high, trying to get to the plate.
Cocktails were good, service was excellent and place looks great.
Unfortunately, since the food is the main reason to be here, its hard to recommend.
Too bad to put two diners at Table #43 when there were plenty of tables and we were at Table $44.
Professional service, friendly, courteous. The cuisine was fresh and delicious. The servers did an excellent job of making us feel comfortable. We had a fun time.
Great to return to Absinthe once more! The French onion soup and pot d creme were delicious! Enjoyed the sea bass and chicken cassoulet, but always prefer the duck cassoulet.
IT WAS MY BIRTHDAY AND I LOVED IT!! I was visiting out of town from Atlanta and just had the most amazing time. It is insanely high class and I loved the oysters.
Atmospher and food are wonderful. Eve is a wonderful bar manager and Martine is a favorite server. New manager, Josh is a very welcome addition.
Visiting from San Diego we went with a friend from the City who knew the restaurant and recommended it. Everything from the cocktails to the food exceeded our expectations. The dishes are creative but at the same time simple. And delicious as were the desserts. We liked Absinthe so much that we went back 3 days later with my wife’s sister. David was our waiter both times. His knowledge of the menu and his friendly but unobtrusive service enhanced our dining experience.
Great, classic French restaurant with a solid wine list!
Great brunch in a fun parklet on Hayes Street. Enjoyed terrific cocktails, superb spiced chickpeas, and split a juicy Niman Ranch burger. Splendid Saturday brunch with outstanding service!
Great food and drinks, glad to see this place still open. Dinner menu was a bit more limited than before, but not surprising given the pandemic.
Perfect from beginning to end. I’ve been here before and I feel the food was better than ever! The highlights included bone marrow, Caesar Salad, ribeye steak and an omelette that reminded of my first Parisian cafes many years ago.
Everything was fine except for our server who looked likely was not happy to serve us. I don’t need him to be my friend but he could have been nicer . We had to ask him if he had a problem with us. I do t mind if they tell me they forgot to place and order but if that person doesn’t want to accept that he was somehow responsible for not getting the order in then that I have an issue with. The busboys were so much more pleasant to deal with as well as Carl the manager.
Service was excellent. Our server was super personable and efficient. Food was uneven The sea bass with creamed parsnips was not great because the parsnips had a sweet vanilla flavor that did not go with the dish. The hamburgers were excellent. The foie gras terrine I don’t think was foie gras—had a country pate texture where we know foie gras to be smooth and unctuous. Finally, the food came before we had gotten our wine. But, on a positive note the Sacred Heart cocktail was amazing!
