We had a double date with college roommate who I haven’t seen in 6 years. Food and service were exceptional!
Food was fabulous! Service was very good. Our table was in a room off to the side and it’s a bit rundown. The main part of restaurant was nice. I assume the room our table was in is used for overflow. I made reservations well in advance we were in from out of town celebrating our son’s birthday so I was a little disappointed with atmosphere but the food and service made up for it. I highly recommend and if I return I will request a table in main dining room.
Dads 74th birthday
Service and food were great. A very loud table across the room made for a less than enjoyable evening. Once they left we could have a conversation at our table.
Always one of Charleston’s better restaurants.
Skip the touristy seafood places and head here - we NEVER go to Charleston without dining in our favorite restaurant. The mussels were done to perfection - perfect warm bread for dunking - the coq au vin was outstanding - my husband enjoyed every bite - salads are delicious and large - we could have split one - but why share if you each want your own?! Our server Jason was very attentive - answered all of our questions and recommended wine - the ambiance is Parisian - lovely music and decor - we truly love this gem of a restaurant - on a side street off King - and worth finding - you will love it! Next time we save room for the best cream brulee in town!
We came for an anniversary dinner. The food was amazing! I mean finger lickin good! Lucky the plate good! If I had room I'd get another entree good! Great atmosphere! Great wine selection. We will be back when we're in town!!
Our lunch was outstanding. We always enjoy the mussels. Our server was great. Very attentive and told us about Tuesday's special on mussels. My receipt says our server was JJ. We will be back. Thank you for another terrific Rue De Jean experience.
Excellent food and service. Greeter greeted with a smile and waitress was very friendly and thorough.
Sat outside on this beautiful day! Delicious food and appetizers! Mussels are the best!
Food is always great--consistently. Our waitress was apparently new, but with more training and experience, will reach the Rue de Jean standards.
Highly recommend!
Loved sitting in the alley! Love moules!
There were 4 of us eating and we all found the food and service outstanding. It was a bit noisy when we first arrived at 7, but quieted down within a half hour.
The food was amazing and our server Maggie was awesome 👏
Everything was delicious as usual. Service was great. Great atmosphere for dining with friends.
The best French onion soup! We also had the chicken francaise and the braised shorts ribs...both equally delicious! We will be back!
Excellent service and great food
Loved the half price mussels!
Love the meal. Steak tartare was excellent. We eat here a few times a year and love it. This time we were relegated to a corner near the bathroom a bit less inviting than the main room. We also miss some of our favorites like Bouillabaisse. We would love for a pastry chef to be hired and return for added dessert decadence. But overall, a great meal.
Ordered scallops and the pear dessert. These are 2 of my favorite nostalgic dishes at this establishment. Apparently they have a new chef now, so the preparation was significantly different. Instead of delicatly plated scallops they came swimming in a bowl full of enough sauce it felt like a soup. Was in need of salt. Pears should have been soft from the poach and they were not. It will be a while before I am ready to try something else.
One of the BEST dinners we've had in Charleston! The service and ambiance was fantastic, but it was nothing compared to the food! All I can say is this... order the Chicken Fracaise!! The chicken was crispy, the lemon caper sauce was full of flavor, and the homemade gnocchi were delicious! I'm a bread-lover and the French Baguette was perfect. Although we usually like to try new restaurants when we visit Charleston, we will definitely be going back to 39 Rue de Jean (and ordering the same dinner all over again). Highly recommend!
Getting together with my s.o & my friend with her husband. Food was amazing. Service was great, even though it took a little while for our waitress to come and greet us/get drink orders.
There were plenty of inside tables open while we were sat outside. Because it was cold and rainy, it would have been nicer to have been seated/moved inside.
Food and drinks were amazing. Would definitely dine here again.
Way too much salt on everything. It was like the just poured salt all over our food.
Valentine’s Brunch at Rue was good. I was a little put out to have been placed next to a larger group and it did not seem that six feet was observed between our tables. More like three or four feet.
The food was great and plentiful so it’s a good value compared to some places downtown.
I think in general, I prefer the ambiance around dinner time, and on a quieter (less busy) day. Service was a bit off because our waitress had at least four tables.
In pre-Covid days, the bar is a good place to hang out as it’s not filled with obnoxious college kids.
Valentines lunch 2/14/2021, a warm greeting from the hostess on a cold and rainy day. Once settled in a cozy booth by the bar Eric never missed a beat with his timely and courteous service. One of our favorite restaurants in Charleston ❤️
I dont know why I was so excited to go here... the service was terrible and the food was nothing exciting. Ordered a 80 dollar bottle... cork was broken at the table and he called it break a cork day...seriously? Potato soap? More like potato paste... would not recommend. Brussel sprouts? Not flash fried... burnt... extra cripsy. Being from the city I was excited to cross this one off the list... now I don't understand why I was. Do NOT recommend.
We haven’t dined at Rue de Jean in many years, but it certainly isn’t the same. The steak frites was over cooked and lacked flavor. The gnocchi was over cooked as well and disintegrated without taste. Good service, but felt rushed by the staff. Servers/hostesses were sloppy in their attire. Seems like the ownership has lost focus on what got them to the status they once enjoyed. Won’t be returning.
Great attention to detail! Got orders correct and kept glasses filled!
Entrees were delightful, a rocky start as the charcuterie had some dry/hard meat. Waitress messed up our order and I got my duck about 20 minutes after the other entrees were out, mussels were delightful. Did not have champagne refills throughout but waitress was kind.
Great food. Little loud. Waiter was very accommodating and knowledgeable. We alway visit this place when we come to town.
Wonderful meal, fantastic service, in a lovely setting. Will definitely be back soon!
Enjoyed a memorable Valentine's dinner while visiting Charleston. From the onion gratin soup to the poached pear dessert, the food was amazing!
Food was ok. The waitress was nice. To me there are plenty of other places to go to in Charleston that taste better.
Best mussels I’ve ever had. We haven’t eaten out in 1 year, but were pleasantly surprised at their Covid mitigation strategies. I have high standards related to this.
The quality of the food and service was excellent. I highly recommend the mussels and burger.
My wife and I went for an early Valentine's Day and enjoyed the special on mussels. The staff was great and our server was very responsive! We felt safe as the staff were all wearing masks and tables were spaced out. We have never had a bad experience.
Mussels and the escargot were excellent. Half price Mussels on Tuesday !!!
The food was excellent! Our waitress was mediocre...meaning...she didn’t really engage/take her time with us...she kept looking the other way when we ordered etc...felt like she was annoyed. I’ve had better wait staff. I just thought we would get a better service since it’s such a nice restaurant. The food and wine were perfect!
We’ve spent a lot of time in France and Belgium and this place more than scratched the itch for some moules and frites and a solid steak with bearnaise. The coq au vin was excellent and the portions were healthy. The noise was just right for not hearing other people’s conversations or for other folks to hear our kids! Only thing I would have liked to have seen would be some high-octane Belgian beers for my little moules to swim in.
Maid the Mistake of ordering a Burger in a French Restaurant
Not a great idea
Was a very bland burger
