By the advertisement expected “French” Restaurant to be more elegant. Felt I needed to not have tried to dress a little but to wear a cap backwards. Food was great. Just had a bar atmosphere. Would not go back if wanted nice dinner (dinner &
drink for 2 with grat $129 )
The restaurant is definitely having some severe staffing issues. It took about 15 minutes for our waitress to come over for the first time. Most of the wait staff looked like they were frantically running around. I ordered the chicken francaise which was fine. The other person I was with ordered the shrimp and it appeared and tasted like it was not fully cooked. When we asked the waitress if the shrimp typically was prepared like this, she said yes, but that they would make a new one if we felt more comfortable. When it came back out, it was the same dish sent back (the pieces that we had cut up were there) just with char marks on the shrimp and in a smaller bowl. The people behind us had to send 2/3 of their meals back as well - 1 meal was cold and the other was too well done to eat. The waitress was pleasant but the restaurant definitely has some work to do before I would consider coming back again.
Very good food, service.
We had outdoor dining for Sunday brunch and it was perfect. Our server was very friendly, pleasant and efficient. Our food was great and the environment was excellent.
Fantastic. Great place to find the perfect bistro. Authentic, great service and ambiance. I'll be back next trip.
Ambiance was great, food was wonderful, service was excellent; this is what you would expect from a great French resturant.
We've been going to 39 Rue de Jean for years (once a month or so). The last 2 times - and even moreso last night - we've felt it's changed, and not for the better.
Post-pandemic the menu has changed, losing some of our favorite dishes. It that were all, we could let it go. But last night the quality of the food was definitely down a notch (or two).
I've had steak frites at Rue de Jean many times. Last night the steak was poorly trimmed - nearly 1/2 fat and gristle. In addition both the steak and the fries were luke warm at best when served.
Server was attentive, but had too many tables to manage. Food was very good. They were out of rabbit sausage so we had fried goat cheese and spinach salad which was very good. Had Mussels which were excellent, but our entrees came before we finished our mussels. Had duck entrees which was excellent. Great wine list. Rating would have been higher if not for the delivering entrees while still enjoying the appetizer. Kitchen was very busy I'm sure.
We had a great meal with delicious wine. Jason is a fantastic server who knew about my food allergies and was ready to recommend items for me.
Went late on a Friday night and they had run out of thier famous onion soup. Service was exceptional and I recommend the mussels and thier chicken francasiae
Great food, outstanding service. The ambiance is cheerful & fun & loud!
We had a mediocre dinner. But the service was super slow. We waited 1 hour to order. The waiter finally turned us over to management. The tried to make it right, through a free round of drinks.
39 Rue de Jean is one of my favorites and I try to dine there whenever the wife and I are in Charleston. The food, service and ambiance are great and it is not overly loud. Our waiter was attentive despite the fact he had a few tables with multiple diners. Needless to say, I shall be back when we are back in Charleston.
I am not a foodie but I think the French food is great. We had dinner and I miss eating lunch there.
Asked for a medium burger it came back charred. Fries were good though so was the bread. Potato soup was eh.
Don’t bother- food mediocre. All hot food served cold. Portions rationed. Service attentive and accommodating but noncooperation from kitchen.
Plenty of other places nearby. Give ‘em a try…
We had mussels which are normally delicious, but these were just average. Not sure if it was that particular order, but it wasn’t good enough to merit making a trip there again. Server was great, salad was good, drinks were fine. But, nothing outstanding
App which was escargot a bit disappointing did not like the garlic sauce, a bit thin. Entree was very good, service was spot on and wine was a winner
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston. My too go place, and love taking visitors.
We always enjoy dining at Rue de Jean! The food is always very good and the French Onion soup is incredible. Our table of four had two dinners of short ribs, pasta with shrimp and soup and beet and fried goat cheese salad. Nice selection of wines and a small but flavorful cheese plate. No room for dessert!
Still a great place, but sadly seemed a little tired around the edges.
Last time I dined at 39 Rue de Jean was in 2003. And it was a bright shining star on the food scene here in Charleston.
The appetizers were disappointing. We had escargots, foie gras, mussels. The meal itself was very good pork chops, duck and chicken franchise.
It was too loud to even hear my date sitting next to me without having to raise our voices. The food was mediocre. The cocktails were too strong - almost couldn't drink it.
We had a delightful brunch for four on Sunday. With one exception, the food was great; on of our attendees ordered eggs benedict and even though all the entrees came with "this plate is very hot" warnings, this one was not and the entree was luke warm to cold. Everyone else's food was hot. Otherwise a very nice experience. Bloody Mary's were awesome.
Great boisterous brasserie atmosphere, very good plates, decent drinks, attentive service all made for an enjoyable meal.
As always, one of our "go-to" places in Charleston serves up yet another great meal. Chicken Francaise was delicious, as were the mussels in Red Curry sauce. Service was fantastic as usual. And frankly, this establishment provides an excellent wine list at some of the most reasonable prices in town. Highly recommended.
Enjoyed one last lunch at the Rue with our son before he walked down the aisle. We have celebrated here over many years. The food and service are consistently good and never disappoint-today was no exception. Outdoor dining was comfortable and waitstaff continue wearing masks. They get extra stars for the great wine selections.
Restaurant has a big bar which was packed with people shouting - the noise permeated the restaurant making conversation impossible. It took 55 minutes for our first order to arrive, came in the wrong order and when the entrees finally arrived one was stone cold and impossible to eat. Eat someplace else when you are in Charleston- this was very disappointing
Always love going to Rue de Jean. It takes me back to Paris every time. Will go again. Soon.
The food was delicious, beautifully presented and the service was excellent.
Having dined here several times before, I was a little disappointed in the food. Onion soup was mediocre, salmon overcooked. Out of scallops and the bourbon we requested.
First time trying 39 Rue de Jean. Had a good experience and would like to return to try other menu items.
Just had apps and a drink but very nice experience and wonderful service with a very knowledgeable and personable waiter.
Please save your money and dine somewhere else. We sent back our salad because the dressing tasted terrible. We ordered the steak frites and the cut of steak was good, but the au Poivre sauce literally tasted like how floor cleaner smells. We could not eat it. Speaking of floors, I slipped two times going to the restroom as the floor was greasy/wet. Seriously, find somewhere else to dine.
Good food slow service. Waiter said they are short on people, food took 40 minutes, omlete
Chicken Francaise is the way to go here, delicious. It’s very loud so conversation can be challenging.
Our server had a 9 to 10 table section in the lounge area and was in the weeds on a Friday evening.
Food was great and arrived as expected, but had to ask for everything we needed.
Really expected someone to step in and help our server but it didn't happen.
Our side dish didn't come until we were done with our meals, and it was a challenge getting more water.
None of this was his fault as he should have gotten some assistance while he was continuously getting double sat with a mostly full section.
Our server made it right with us on our check but he shouldn't have had to and we didn't expect it. He somehow found the time to recognize my wife's birthday with a dessert and ended the subpar evening on a good note which both of us appreciated.
Not what we expected from a restaurant of this caliber.
We loved it. The service was wonderful the dinner was great -the mussels were fabulous !!!
We love sharing dishes and they served them split each course. Wonderful
the table water had an unpleasant taste as if it was unfiltered tap water. the french dip was made with poor quality beef with a lot of tendon in it. the panna cotta dessert had blueberries in vinegar which tasted like italian dressing- a disappointment. I told the waiter and no response was made.
