Good, not great. Certain dishes were phenomenal (Onion soup and tartare). Shrimp provincal was pretty weak and coffee was room temperature. Service was good as well. Not a bad meal by any means, just better options in the area.

Our first time at 39 Rue de Jean, august 2022, was fabulous. We decided for our next trip to downtown Charleston we would dine there again. Unfortunately our experience was not the same. Although all the staff (hostess, wait staff etc) were friendly and genuine, sadly, overall wait time was unacceptable, our food was barely warm, and it appears we missed out on the full experience we had from our first visit. I suspect this was a one off and not indicative of the normal. I would like to go back and hopefully relive that first time.

Disappointing experience starting from the host to the server, poor service. We were not even informed of any specials but heard the same server discuss them with another table. Did not even offer a dessert menu. When we asked about desserts we were only given one choice. Needless to say we will not be back.

There was a back up in the kitchen so we waited an hour and a half for our entrees. Bread and butter was AMAZING. Duck croquettes were ok, taste was good it was just a bit rich for us. The Brussels salad was huge , even the half portion, but it was very good. I had the olive tapenade, which was not great. We got the fish that was bone in, not mentioned by waiter by my dad loved the taste. I had the burger which was great, but just a burger nothing extra fancy about it. My mom had the bouillabaisse , it wasn’t has hit temp-wise, as she had hoped. Complimentary dessert for the birthday man. He chose the cappuccino cake that we didn’t love. The wine was good. Server was nice but again, lots of delays and no compensation for it. We were there for almost three hours for dinner. it was a long night.

We had wanted to try Rue de Jean and finally got there. Our server, Cody, was terrific! The Manager on duty was Mike. Frankly, we were disappointed, especially considering the price point and location. Appetizers (French Onion Soup and Goat Cheese Salad) were quite good - so the start was as expected. The entrees were the biggest problem. My wife had the Seared Scallops. They were good, but included just 3 scallops - looked more like an appetizer portion than an entree - especially for the price point at $32. The sweet potato fingerlings that accompanied them were overcooked and chewy. My Chicken Francaise was an appropriate portion - 2 pieces of chicken breast. However, the Mushroom Risotto was room temperature and overcooked. The roasted brussels sprouts were tough and chewy. The side order of Asparagus Bernnaise was also overcooked and chewy. When we respectfully brought these issues up to our server and then the manager, Cody did his best to accommodate. The manager, however was not willing to do anything (at first) other than offer us another serving of risotto, which we did not want. We were told he could not offer any discount on the meal, mentioning that they no longer were able to do so, inferring that this had been a recurring issue of late. Finally, they did give us a complimentary dessert. The Creme' de Boule, while at no charge, was also not up to par...it was runny. We're locals and not tourists, and will not be recommending this restaurant to any of our visitors. There are too many great options to choose from in the this town.

There were three of us. One person had the scallops. These were very small. Another had the bouillabaisse and found it to be excellent: Portion was plentiful. I has the chicken francaise. Huge portion served with Brussels sprouts. The Brussel sprouts were very good.

Disappointing. Paper tablecloths torn off a roll (used to be linen) Of the four entrees, one arrived 12mins after the others - with ensuing cold food for three of us. One VERY undercooked chicken - sent back Other food dishes were good, but not outstanding. Under-trained server: had to ask for extra cutlery (twice)....started removing entrée plates while others were still eating (acceptable in Outback, but not Rue de Jean) We don't often eat out in Charleston and had been looking forward to this as our Christmas-treat night out with family. It seems to have lost it's 'class' which used to separate it from the hundreds of other restaurants in Charleston.

I ordered medium rare lamb chops and got medium and medium well done chops. One of my lamb chops was charred so much it was difficult to cut My husband's lamb chops were medium rare.

Didn’t appreciate the up charge for a lemon in a lemon drop martini and a fee charged for using a credit card- which the waittress just failed to tell us about….she never asked if we’d eaten there before…..or shared those specifics- giving us the opportunity to make a different choice.

Great bread. Great service. Great atmosphere. So-so onion soup (under seasoned). Had fried goat cheese salad - it was missing dressing and promised candied pecans. Under pour on first glass wine - better on 2nd glass. So not a total miss but kitchen is not paying attention. Could be worse but could be better. French romantic music would make it better; chosen background music was too brash.

Overall awesome evening, Great food!!! Our only low star is for the lighting, very dark where we sat. Had to use our phones flashlight to read the menu. We asked to turn up the lights slightly, but they forgot, no biggie, that did not dampen our time there. We will go again! Thanks for a great anniversary evening.

The service was excellent. Very pretty place. The chef is very very heavy handed with the salt. Actually had to send one dish back because it was not edible. Even the fries were drenched in salt. Really should have sent everything back. But the management and the waiter could not have been nicer. So unless you like your food to taste like salt and nothing else I suggest you find another French restaurant.

We easily booked reservation on Open Table and were seated immediately. The wait staff were pleasant and professional. My partner had the braised lamb and thoroughly enjoyed. The atmosphere was a little loud but still pleasant. I am a very finicky eater and had the Chicken Qo Au Vin and could not eat the meal. The chicken was on the bone which is always a problem for me and I did not see in the description. The chicken was served with what looked like onion and either potatoes or ham chunks, however was chewy and just big pieces of fat which turned my stomach. I would try again but would order something safer such as pasta.

I've been going to Rue de Jean for 20+ years. I have always looked at it as a solid, non too expensive or fussy place to get a meal and enjoy the company of friends. Recently I was out with old friends from my last job that popped into town - as is the case these days, you cannot get in to most places now with our reservations made well in advance. Rue had space and we went. The experience was so disappointing, I am urged to write this review. Hostess and server were polite and upbeat. Something is seriously wrong in the kitchen. The steal tartar was chopped incorrectly, not cold, severely under seasoned (no trace of salt, anchovy or dijon), and the clumsy chunks made it chewy and unpleasant. My entree was mussels and fries. The broth was cols, the fries (a former point of pride with Rue) were cold and soggy. My friends french onion soup was under-seasoned, too crisp onions, and the cheese was obviously melted over cold soup. I have never run a kitchen in a restaurant, but I suspect these are things that should not happen if a kitchen is being run properly. I am disappointed, and sadly I cannot see a reason to return after so many years of good food.

I dinned here two years ago and had one of the best meals and experiences I’ve ever had. This time the chef was different and the whole experience was underwhelming. I’m not revisiting this restaurant on my next visit to Charleston.

Scallops had an unusual taste the required sending back to kitchen. Waiter was all about himself, instead of our birthday guest. Short ribs were good as was boulliabase. There are way too many other restaurants to try in Charleston. By the way it takes ten minutes to get a draft beer from the bar.

It was slightly more than off putting that the host was posing as a hostess. Just not what we expected. My wife’s meal came out wrong after a considerable wait. My food was perfect. The wine selection is very good and the Bordeaux was great.

High hopes but left very disappointed. My Short Rib was okay and my wife’s Spinach pasta was so sticky and bland she didn’t even eat it. Again, we were so looking forward to a nice dining experience but just wasn’t meant to be - Bummer.

The duck was fantastic. Overall the service was good. One of the bartenders didn’t want us sitting at the bar while we were waiting for our table, and we had ordered drinks. That was a bit rude. The crème brûlée was terrible. It had the consistency of a soup. I had heard good reviews about the crème brûlée but definitely was not cooked properly. Will go back but avoid the crème brûlée
