App which was escargot a bit disappointing did not like the garlic sauce, a bit thin. Entree was very good, service was spot on and wine was a winner
This is one of my favorite restaurants in Charleston. My too go place, and love taking visitors.
We always enjoy dining at Rue de Jean! The food is always very good and the French Onion soup is incredible. Our table of four had two dinners of short ribs, pasta with shrimp and soup and beet and fried goat cheese salad. Nice selection of wines and a small but flavorful cheese plate. No room for dessert!
Still a great place, but sadly seemed a little tired around the edges.
Last time I dined at 39 Rue de Jean was in 2003. And it was a bright shining star on the food scene here in Charleston.
The appetizers were disappointing. We had escargots, foie gras, mussels. The meal itself was very good pork chops, duck and chicken franchise.
It was too loud to even hear my date sitting next to me without having to raise our voices. The food was mediocre. The cocktails were too strong - almost couldn't drink it.
We had a delightful brunch for four on Sunday. With one exception, the food was great; on of our attendees ordered eggs benedict and even though all the entrees came with "this plate is very hot" warnings, this one was not and the entree was luke warm to cold. Everyone else's food was hot. Otherwise a very nice experience. Bloody Mary's were awesome.
Great boisterous brasserie atmosphere, very good plates, decent drinks, attentive service all made for an enjoyable meal.
As always, one of our "go-to" places in Charleston serves up yet another great meal. Chicken Francaise was delicious, as were the mussels in Red Curry sauce. Service was fantastic as usual. And frankly, this establishment provides an excellent wine list at some of the most reasonable prices in town. Highly recommended.
Enjoyed one last lunch at the Rue with our son before he walked down the aisle. We have celebrated here over many years. The food and service are consistently good and never disappoint-today was no exception. Outdoor dining was comfortable and waitstaff continue wearing masks. They get extra stars for the great wine selections.
Restaurant has a big bar which was packed with people shouting - the noise permeated the restaurant making conversation impossible. It took 55 minutes for our first order to arrive, came in the wrong order and when the entrees finally arrived one was stone cold and impossible to eat. Eat someplace else when you are in Charleston- this was very disappointing
Always love going to Rue de Jean. It takes me back to Paris every time. Will go again. Soon.
The food was delicious, beautifully presented and the service was excellent.
Having dined here several times before, I was a little disappointed in the food. Onion soup was mediocre, salmon overcooked. Out of scallops and the bourbon we requested.
First time trying 39 Rue de Jean. Had a good experience and would like to return to try other menu items.
Just had apps and a drink but very nice experience and wonderful service with a very knowledgeable and personable waiter.
Please save your money and dine somewhere else. We sent back our salad because the dressing tasted terrible. We ordered the steak frites and the cut of steak was good, but the au Poivre sauce literally tasted like how floor cleaner smells. We could not eat it. Speaking of floors, I slipped two times going to the restroom as the floor was greasy/wet. Seriously, find somewhere else to dine.
Good food slow service. Waiter said they are short on people, food took 40 minutes, omlete
Chicken Francaise is the way to go here, delicious. It’s very loud so conversation can be challenging.
Our server had a 9 to 10 table section in the lounge area and was in the weeds on a Friday evening.
Food was great and arrived as expected, but had to ask for everything we needed.
Really expected someone to step in and help our server but it didn't happen.
Our side dish didn't come until we were done with our meals, and it was a challenge getting more water.
None of this was his fault as he should have gotten some assistance while he was continuously getting double sat with a mostly full section.
Our server made it right with us on our check but he shouldn't have had to and we didn't expect it. He somehow found the time to recognize my wife's birthday with a dessert and ended the subpar evening on a good note which both of us appreciated.
Not what we expected from a restaurant of this caliber.
We loved it. The service was wonderful the dinner was great -the mussels were fabulous !!!
We love sharing dishes and they served them split each course. Wonderful
the table water had an unpleasant taste as if it was unfiltered tap water. the french dip was made with poor quality beef with a lot of tendon in it. the panna cotta dessert had blueberries in vinegar which tasted like italian dressing- a disappointment. I told the waiter and no response was made.
Big difference from before pandemic. Won’t return anytime soon. Lots of things no longer on menu and food not nearly as good as before
A French twist on South Carolina low country cuisine that you won’t soon forget. Simply Outstanding!
Friendly staff and great food!
This is a favorite local spot for us. Escargot, filet mignon, good selection of spirits. We go about once a month. Great for before concerts or other events downtown.
We were so exiting to try a duck. 6 people of 11 wanted and came only for duck but your duck run out. 😢
Wonderful location to meet friends for good food! A bit disappointed that we were unable to order their signature Manhattan -- they did not have the housemade elixir to add in. Overall, very good!
May have been a bad night have had wonderful meals there before but a party of 10 at 630pm on a Saturday was too much for them to handle
We had a reservation made with plenty of time to spare (90 minutes) to make it to our concert next door. While we were seated on time, it took 45 minutes alone to get a basket of bread delivered. Once we were finally able to place our order, we were told that they were out of the one item that I wanted - a basic French Dip. The waiter confirmed wither the kitchen, adding even more time to our wait. Once our meal was delivered, my husband’s “whole” trout (per the menu) was in-fact not whole at all, but a trout filet. The waiter offered to comp a dessert, but we were unable to accept as we had to rush to make it to our show on time. In short, majorly disappointing experience. Not likely to return.
I felt like we were in Paris! Delicious food !
Always a great time at Rue de Jean. Food and drinks were great as was the atmosphere
Before a concert! Always a great experience! Food and drinks coming out a little slow, and it wasn’t that busy..,but still good!
The onion soup and bread were delicious. The meat charcuterie was unimpressive. When we entered for dinner at 6:00 pm, the noise level was fine. By the time we left about an hour later, it was too noisy to comfortably carry on a conversation at our table for 4. Service was fine but, with many restaurants, a bit too intrusive. It's not necessary for the waitstaff to tell me they are taking the credit cards or returning the it...I can see that they are. It would be less intrusive for the waitstaff/food delivery staff to know who ordered what dish instead of interrupting the conversation at the table to ask for the information (again, too many restaurants allow this type of interruption). I will return, because I love their onion soup, and request an outside table.
For my birthday we drove 5 hours from Tennessee to our favorite Charleston restaurant, 39 Rue de Jean, prior to a concert at the Charleston Music Hall, which is next door. We were happily anticipating a lovely meal of mussels…a specialty.
The restaurant was experiencing a staff shortage which was exacerbated by our server quitting in mid-shift saying he had “too many tables”. The management, particularly a young man named Branson, swung into action without missing a beat filling drink & dinner orders & keeping everyone happy on a busy Friday night. The food was as excellent as always. We had a superb dinner dotted with a bit of drama. Oh, and I was presented with a piece of chocolate mousse cake with a lighted candle. I happily made a birthday wish as I blew the candle out.
Friendly service and excellent food.
A bit noise , great place to meet friends.
Mussels were skimpy / first time I did not have a 1st Class meal, so I was surprised and disappointed.
It was wonderful!!!!! It was my birthday and everyone treated me like a queen!!!!
No complaints about the food because it was good. Service was average. The server made no effort to interact with us so we got the bare basics as far as service goes. Restaurant was extremely loud and therefore it was difficult to have a conversation with each other at our table . It was an anniversary celebration but server never mentioned it.
