39 Rue de Jean - Charleston
We offer a modified menu from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm.
Raw mussels, overcooked trout. Not a good evening from the kitchen
I have never been disappointed at Rue de Jean. Wonderful food & service.
We had a fabulous dinner, celebrating our daughter’s birthday. Our server, Cassandra, was a delight! She knew the foods well, was efficient, and made everything about our meal special. Rue de Jean never disappoints!!!
J'ai eu un merveilleux dîner avec des amis... la sélection du vin était merveilleuse, et le service... merci Michael
Bread came after our meal. They literally sat us right next to where they cut the bread and kept telling us it was on its way for 45ish minutes as we watched them cut up bread and bring it to other tables.
Celebrated the birth of a new grandchild with a bottle of Veuve here - - -price-wise, 39 Rue de Jean has every other restaurant in town beat, hands down, on this particular bottle!!! Great food choices, excellent quality. Wonderful server.
The interior looks and feels like a proper French brasseries, but the food leaves much to be desired. Over-cooked meat, sub-par vegetables and way too much salt.
We were pleasantly surprised at the quality of food since it was restaurant week. The service was great as was the food. Will definitely be returning
Rue de Jean is not new to us but it was a last minute decision. And as always, the best choice!
The only downside was that there was a real estate conference event nearby so the bar was overrun with attendees. However they moved us to a better table and the crowd left after a half hour.
Our waiter was great - Had funny comment for the noise level -
He let us take our time in ordering and we appreciated the birthday candle in our dessert.
We will return for sure the next time we are in Charleston!
How can we say no to our 5 year old grandson, Bair, who wants his own bowl of the moules in vegetable cream sauce? We used to share but he has graduated to easily finishing his own bowl. We take him about every other Saturday. My husband's favorite is the Brasserie Burger, the best burger in town. He did vary from that 2 weeks in a row during Restaurant Week with the their special of Beef Bourguignon. He wishes that was on the regular menu. The Saturday night special of Filet Rossini with foi gras and chopped truffles is my absolute favorite dish. The filet is always flavorful, cooked to perfection, and melts in your mouth. The foi gras is an ample slice that adds that buttery richness to the steak and is a satisfying combination. I can't promise, but one night I may try one of the other dishes of duck or chicken but, all I can think about all week is that steak. If you go for lunch you should try their quiche. There is a different one each day. Their quiche was the first quiche that I fell in love with. It is very rich and perfect with the greens with which it is served.
We were a bit disappointed as it was highly recommended for lunch.
Great place- not stuffy like some French style places. Food excellent and service very accommodating. I had rabbit and it was good. Located right in the middle of the best area.
We have been coming back to 39 Rue de Jean for 14 years for the mussels and truffle fries and they never disappoint. This visit was as good as the first and the dozen in between. Service is always professional but warm. It is like being welcomed by family.
Rue de Jean is an absolutely dependable good meal in a pretty authentic-looking French bistro. It is very noisy, so if you're looking for an intimate evening, go elsewhere. I had the mussels marinere which were superb, served in a rich, velvety broth that demanded to be mopped up with some of the crusty bread provided. My companion had the goat cheese salad and then the onion soup that was blanketed with gruyere cheese. In all, Rue de Jean is a very enjoyable bistro.
I ended up going alone during restaurant week and the hostess was a nice to me! She even helped me with a finicky meter. My server Edward was the best! I followed his recommendations and enjoyed the French onion soup , beef dish and chocolate pate! The food was incredible!
The mussels were outstanding as usual. I ordered the gravlox sandwich with salad the gravlox was tough and salty. Rather disappointing
Very Very nice, but the crowd noise was Loud. Great food and the service was Outstanding.
The Coq is vin had lots of bones in it. I was hoping I wouldn’t choke the whole time.
Honestly, I was really looking forward to visiting this restaurant while in town. The service was not great, our drink order came super late and the waiter neglected to recall he took an order for apps so that took a minute to arrive. The food was mediocre at best. Scallops were rubbery and nothing really popped. The desert was quite good, I can say that!
Everything was great. Especially the creme brûlée
Rue de Jean has always been a go-to for us if we are going to a show at the Music Hall and our most recent visit didn't disappoint. Menu has plenty of options - both diet-conscious as well as for those that want to indulge in something a bit richer. Salads were sizable and complimented the sushi and tartare that we enjoyed as our entrees. Service was attentive without being overbeing. The reason for four versus five stars for my rating was being stuck in a corner that felt cramped and lighting for was extremely poor. We left satisfied, but not stuffed. Will be back again soon!
We went before a concert at Charleston Music Hall next door, so of course it was crowded and loud that evening. We had a reservation and were seated promptly near the bar area. I imagine the main dining room would have been a bit less noisy. Even though it was was busy, the service was very good and our food came out quickly, and everything was cooked perfectly. Delicious as always! Definitely one of our favorite restaurants.
Always has the best food to match the great atmosphere! One of our favorites!
The shrimp cocktails are the best I have ever had. Best food and service in Charleston !!!
Rue de Jean was a great choice as always. This time, we were fortunate to be there on bouillabaisse night. Delicious. Mom, who at 98 can be a picky eater, relished her trout almandine and creme broule. Will be back on our next trip to Charleston.
Awesome as always!
Had a great time in a great place! Will be back!
The wonderful French menu selections are what attracted me to this place and the food that came out of the kitchen fulfilled my hopes. Delicious. With the exception of a vegetable entree, every one of entrees were the tops. Food prepared well with the flavors that one expect from a French cuisine. Very finely flavored sauces. Rabbit, lamb, steak au povuire, coq au vin, trout all delicious.
The disappointments came from two areas. The seating for 8 of us was a long table and there didn't seem to be a round table in the place. Would have been nice to have one.
Secondly, the service was inattentive, slow, and erratic. For the quality of the food (and the price point which is steep but reasonable), the service should have been so much different. I just felt our waitress was not on top of how to serve. And we weren't that hard to satisfy. Because of our group size, the tip was already added to the tab, but I would have definitely left less that my usual 20% (which is what the restaurant calculated).
Also, no one in the place had any knowledge of the wines on the wonderful extensive wine list. We couldn't get a recommendation for our wine selection and went with a known quantity. The prices on the wine were quit reasonable.
I would go again and would recommend it. But I would ask for another server if we got the one we had last night, on the chance that this is not a restaurant problem. Lack of wine sommelier needs attention.
my mom and i went as a special treat for ourselves, a girls night. steak frites were delicious, bread was warm and yummy, and we both recommend the pot de creme for dessert!!
Great food, wine and atmosphere. The mussels are amazing, all of the dishes are loaded with dynamic flavor.
We love French brasseries and this did not disappoint. In a foodie town like Charleston, you’ve gotta be good to stay in business. Drinks were a little pricey, but food seemed reasonably priced and good quality. We both had seafood-scallops and trout amandine-and it was fresh and delicious.
The highlight of the meal was dessert. We shared the flourless chocolate torte and it was outstanding, creamy and chocolaty, heaven in every bite. I would return just for that dessert.
Atmosphere was great, drinks were fantastic, service was outstanding, food was not good. My salad was drowned in dressing, salmon was too salty and too hard. Everyone at the table were not impressed about the food.
Exquisite food, fantastic service and a delightful atmosphere
Authentic French done well! Highly recommend the mussels, Coq A Vin, and Poached Pear!
Food was just okay. It was pretty busy but service was really slow, slower than it should have been.
We wind up here a lot because it is a reliable and fun place to eat. The service is always stellar. I love their six or eight different varieties of mussels so ordering anything else is difficult for me because they’re so good. Brunch menus on weekends are fantastic. All the egg dishes are yummy. Any of their sandwiches are delicious, also their fries are unspeakably good. We enjoy all of the Bennet Hospitality restaurants and this one doesn’t disappoint-ever!
Great lunch. Service was quick an attentive. Food was perfect. Will recommend this place in the future.
Wine selection was great. Food was good, but I expected more from the service. A lot more.
One of our favorite places. Always great food. A must stop for lunch or dinner.
