Diner Reviews
  • "What an amazing night we had here this week while visiting San Francisco from DC. Everything was delicious but the roasted chicken for two really was spectacular. Service was so nice - really like being at a friends house. So glad we ate here as one of only a handful of meals we had time for in the city."

  • "I joined a business associate for lunch. We both agreed it was excellent. By far the best Ceasar Salad in the City. The service was spot on and the host station even had matches."

  • "This was our first time at Zuni Cafe. It has been on my wife's list for a long time, and we had the opportunity to visit in the late afternoon for a drink and dinner. Really a delightful spot with big clean windows looking out at the vibrant hustle and bustle of the city. The cocktail was enjoyable as we unwound from a busy day. Upon being seated at an upstairs table with a white tablecloth we reviewed the menu and made some tough choices. I had the special, squab! Though I was teased by my wife, she really lit up after trying a bite, which I cautiously negotiated for a taste of her lamb! Wonderful food & presentation. Our waiter was excellent and provided us with answers to all our questions. Overall, the experience was fabulous!"

  • "Always get the chicken. The ricotta gnocchi are like clouds. And if you're lucky to be there early or late - try the burger!"

  • "The food was fresh and tasted heathy. The chicken is the well known dish and, for chicken, it as quite good. The clams with the rock cod were also delicious, as were the oysters, but the scallop appetizer was small and it all felt a bit overpriced for what it was."

  • "A simply horrible experience. Probably the worst meal of our lives - corn soup with no corn and too much chili oil (so much that it made us cough!), salmon that clearly had been sitting around, and a pork chop that was 1/3 meat and 2/3 fat - and I'm pretty sure pork isn't supposed to be as red as this was inside. A complete fail. Even worse? No official apology or accountability by the restaurant despite this feedback. There are SO many great restaurants in Hayes Valley, this is not one of them. The Zuni Cafe of the past is gone."

  • "Zuni Cafe has been one of our favorite like many other San Franciscans. We finally got our chicken after over an hour and 15 minutes of wait, that was not cooked, red and bleeding. After trying couple pieces, we had to ask eventually, very politely to send it back to the kitchen, which they just put it in the oven. After a while, came back exactly as it was sent (still raw inside except burnt and dried vegetables and dried chicken outside). We sat right outside of the kitchen and could see our server talking to the chef and manager(or host in suit) and they looked at us but no one came to our table and said nothing even after we got raw chicken second time. We had to ask them to wrap it up, paid the full amount without any acknowledgement."

  • "Have been coming to Zuni for the past 19 years ... usually a special occasion place so only once or twice a year. In general, almost everyone I go with loves the bread salad that comes with the chicken the best. It is divine! Unfortunately this time the salad was mostly just that BREAD and it was HARD ... probably because there was so little of the other ingredients such as the pine nuts and currents that enhance and soften and give it that wonderful flavor. Sad :("

  • "I've been dining at Zuni since 1990. I haven't been since 2010. The food was good, not great like I remember. The service was less than remarkable, he was kind but not "on it". A dog that was at the next table snapped at a little girl at the table next to it. NOT GOOD."

  • "I took a friend here for lunch, and it could not have been a better experience. We sat next to a wall cut out and were able to look down onto the kitchen. The service was very good, and the chicken was amazing. I am not a stuffing lover, but I have not had anything like the stuffing came with the chicken. I could have eaten a whole plate of it."

  • "Only issue was with the service. The server disappeared during the meal. Then when he cleared the tables, he got oil on my friend's shirt."

  • "For many years, I'd been wanting to try Zuni on visits to San Francisco. Finally, I was able to do so. All 4 of us felt the food was extremely mediocre. One of us had been there a couple of times before and found it to be quite good. Something is just off...from the bread to the salads to the main courses, the food was OK to poor. The salad was the best part, but not terribly inventive, the bread uninteresting, the main course completely dried out for me and not interesting for any of us. We dared not risk dessert. All of us left very surprised and very disappointed."

  • "Excellent brick oven roasted chicken. But must order right away as it takes one hour to cook. Was seated near the brick oven so it was very warm. This was the only downside."

  • "Zuni contiinues to be one of my favorite SF restaurants. The food is excellent and I always have to get the roasted chicken as it is so delicious. The appetizers were great also. Kudos to the team for keeping the restaurant so current."

  • "Had to try the famous roasted chicken with bread salad. It was worth the wait and worth the money. It truly was the best chicken I have ever eaten. Yes, the restaurant is very overpriced but all in all the service was great, the food was fantastic and our son had a great meal from the leftovers!"

  • "I've been coming to Zuni since 97' and can honestly say that I won't be coming again. I started with a drink at the bar before dinner and was greeted by a bartender who couldn't be bothered by my questions about bourbon. Dinner portions that all my quests ordered were tiny and I had to grab a slice of pizza afterwards. Sorry that Zuni is no longer the place I once loved. So many better places to eat in San Francisco!"

  • "The BEST oysters. We tried 2 appetizers and the skirt steak entree. Both appetizers (burrata and octopus) were exceptional. The skirt steak was great, with fabulous sauce and a side of greens. Watch out --- Their signature chicken for two is really large enough for 4 people. Atmosphere is comfortable."

  • "One of the better meals we have had in our dining experiences in the Bay Area. The chicken was the best we had ever eaten. Superb!!! All the other courses we ordered were very good. We definitely will be back. Service attentive and knowledgeable, but not overbearing."

  • "I have lived just blocks from Zuni for nearly 9 years. I'm so glad I finally made a reservation. And went. From the super attentive friendly wait staff to the amazing wine and food it was all just superb. I'd recommend this place to anyone wanting to go to a special place and have a great time."

  • "I was so disappointed in lunch at Zuni. The service was lackluster and slow and the food portions were scant and unattractively plated. In addition, my hamburger, which was ordered medium rare came to the table well done. Overall quite disappointing. It will be quite some time before I return."

  • "I always regarded the Zuni Cafe to have top notch food. This time a disappointment. The waitress recommended a pork dish--it was slices of pork shoulder which turned out to be dry. I know this is not an expensive cut of meat but was expecting a great preparation for the $29 price tag. Another recommendation was a fried panko encrusted vegetable--they mentioned what the vegetables would be such as mushrooms and they were not there. Cheese polenta had no marscapone cheese in it as it was advertised. When the waitress recommended a glass of wine it turned out to be 1 glass for $18. Lots of hype about how the dessert pastry was Kneeded 1000 times!"

  • "Lively atmosphere and happy people in a great space. The food was delicious. Roast chicken for two is clearly the preferred dish, and for good reason. We also had oysters, salad, a fettucine "side dish," drinks and dessert, and it was all excellent. Would definitely return."

  • "I was so disappointed to have our out of town guests treated with disdain. Plus they brought the wrong entree ordered by one of our guests- It is great to have good food, but there is no excuse for service with an attitude…this is one of our favorite restaurants, and I will think twice about bringing out of town guests again."

  • "Order the chicken as soon as you arrive - it takes at least an hour to cook, but it is well worth the wait. It's crispy and very moist - served on a bread salad with the best bread soaked in chicken juices and olive oil - more than enough for two. There were three of us and we also tried the skate - the burrata with squash - the delicious asparagus soup and a wonderful tart for dessert. The restaurant was booked on a Wednesday. We couldn't get reservations until 10pm. But it was cozy with the wood oven and a group of French tourists at the next table. I highly recommend this intimate, but popular restaurant. "

  • "We chose to go to Zuni Café prior to the symphony because of the many great meal we had experienced there. This dinner was quite disappointing. The highlight was the champagne we had at the bar and the nice bartenders. The food was simply not up to the standard we are used to, especially since we live in the wine country. The pork prime rib was a very poor, small piece of meat. It consisted mainly of bones and fat. A better cut is available at Safeway. The server seemed quite disinterested in his job and never inquired as to our satisfaction with the meal. It will be a long time before we frequent this restaurant again."

  • "Everything was great about this place. The food, the atmosphere and the service were all perfect. The chicken is worth the wait to be cooked. It is a full chicken and we could have split it 3-ways. Definitely will go back on my next visit to San Fran."
