Diner Reviews
  • "Exceptional dining exp. interesting/delicious combination of flavors. Try the Taste of Zahav offering. We will definitely be returning. Parking was a challenge."

  • "My wife and I enjoyed a fantastic meal with knowledge staff. The manager was very friendly and interactive making us feel warmly welcomed. A fantastic evening."

  • "Our first visit here and it was exceptional. We did the Tayim or Taste of Zahav menu and it is the best way to get an introduction to Chef Solomonov's artful delicacies (with an incredible quality-price ratio). Truly one of Philadelphia's finest restaurants and one we look forward to re-visiting many times."

  • "Well, I'm fairly new to the city, so "best in Philly" may be a bit preemptive. But I can say that, from the service to the food, I cannot find a flaw. And for the money (it's not cheap, but I've spent far more at restaurants) I will be returning."

  • "Hummus was awesome! Grilled lamb n chicken were good. A bit over rated n over prized."

  • "We were rushed to our seats, rushed to order and the food came very quickly. Under the prix fixe it was like a several course fast foos reatuarant. They wanted to turn the table so bad I felt shoved. The ood was OK but not spectacular. Some portions were unique. The wine list was very expsnsive and they turned their nose at the couple of listings at less than $80 a bottle."

  • "My wife and I were celebrating our 5 year anniversary and the staff at Zahav helped make it special. They gave us champagne, were quick to smile and stop and chat, checked on us appropriately, and even gave us a dessert that would meet my wife's dietary needs. Overall, a wonderful experience."

  • "Lovely experience with remarkable, healthful food, a waiter both prompt and attentive. Cost for the evening bordered on unfair to the restaurant!"

  • "This was our second time at Zahav and it did not disappoint. Our server, Ben was attentive and knoweledgeable about the menu. The craft beer selection and speciality cocktails are great! I suggest getting the Taste of Zahav which allows to try a number of items including dessert. Everything was delicious but we loved the beet salad, house smoked sable, chicken kebab, duck, and the Turkish hummus. We also added foie gras to our meal which is served by the owner. The foie gras was amazing and having Michael Solomonov come out and serve was awesome. Because it was my birthday we received free falafel which was amazing as well. We will definitely go back!"

  • "The waiter gave us a great explanation of the menu. We always had water and clean table. Every one works together. Even tough, on yelp it says not kid friendly, my kids were given special attention and loved the food."

  • "We had an amazing dinner at Zahav, foreboded by a comment by a man in the neighbourhood of whom we asked directions:"Zahav? You are in for a treat." (Our map app was leading us astray a bit). A treat it was. We ordered the tasting menu, and with the three of us each ordering two different kinds of mezzes and one course from the grill, we had lots to taste. All this was preceded by the first course of little salads, vegetables, warm flatbread, and hummus (and topped by dessert). Everything was fresh, flavours carefully combined (washed down well with a citrusy, light ale). The service was impeccable; helpful but non-intrusive."

  • "When I want to show off Philadelphia, this is one of my favorite places for dinner. We spend more, but it's worth it! I'm a big fan of just about everything on the menu, and the service is impeccable. I have friends who say it's too expensive, but I disagree - when it comes to quality, Zahav is consistently excellent and interesting."

  • "I has been to zahav before and had a great experience so I decided to go back and take my parents. It was an absolute disaster. I don't remember the portions being so small. We left the place still hungry. In addition, the kitchen was closing so the wait staff was rushed and made it clear they were trying to clean up. Very uncomfortable and unsatisfactory all round"

  • "Zahav is our favorite restaurant, and our go-to for special occasions or out-of-town guests. No other restaurant offers such a unique menu. The quality is flawless, the spicing superb. Each dish is a moment to savor. The only small complaint is that it could use some more sound-dampening design."

  • "The last few visits we have been disappointed in the new small plates we have ordered. The old standbys are usually as expected, good. We love the hummus selections and the salatim lifted even higher by the hot sauces, served upon request. It does seems the small plates keep getting smaller with questionable value at 12/14 each; even considering the somewhat exotic ingredients and preparation. We have frequented Zahav but I do believe we will lower it on our restaurant visit list. Is Zahav getting tired or or we tired of Zahav? Perhaps both?"

  • "The five-course meal is a ton of food, but it's a good value and amazingly delicious. Great service, even w/ a 10:45 p.m. when the staff presumably wants to go home. We love Zahav."

  • "A visit to Philly for us always includes dinner at Zahav. Began by relaxing with a lemonnana cocktail. Hummous with tahina and warm laffa is not to be missed. Lots of vege options - my favorite is the califlower, roasted with a minty sauce. Sadly, we missed the lamb shoulder as it was sold out and orders are not accepted in advance."

  • "The food was interesting takes on traditional mid eastern fare. The service was impeccable including very well train bus people. Friendly and very hip place even for who aren't so with it."

  • "We dined here about a month ago and were blown away by everything we ordered. We decided to return with some out of town friends and it was even better the second time. Since the last visit the menu changed a little. If the watermelon salad is available, do yourself a favor and order it. Don't miss the haloumi either. Can't wait to go back again."

  • "Zahav is the most amazing dining experience in Philly. The hummus is like no other - especially with the homemade lafta flatbread. The mains are always spectacular. We could eat there every night."

  • "Zahav does a truly outstanding job crafting delicious and at times quite inventive Israeli food. The service is excellent and while the cost makes this a special occasion restaurant it is by no means unreasonable or prohibitive."

  • "This was my third time at zahav. The food continues to be fabulous-some of the most unique and delicious dishes I have ever encountered. The only minor negative I can cite is that each time I have returned I have been progressively less impressed with the service. The first time I dined here the server was like a wizard with information about the dishes and the wines. This most recent time there was nothing notable whatsoever about our service except that it was dull and lacked enthusiasm. Perhaps my first experience set the subsequent servers up for failure but zahav does carry a reputation for impressive service so I'd hate to see that change as they get busier."

  • "I was SO pumped to dine at Zahav after hearing great things on Ylep, OpenTable and a few friends, but I left disappointed... Although the food was good, steep prices and a pushy staff will keep my from going back. I have a pet peeve with overly observant servers who wait for the first sign of a finished meal before scooping up the plates and sending the next course to the kitchen. Unfortunately this happened after our salads and Mezze dishes. A score of 3 seems appropriate since the food was very good, but I can't justify the price tag when I felt rushed for nearly the entire meal."

  • "My wife and I ate at Zahav for the first time on Tuesday night. The place was packed when we arrived for our 6:30 reservations. We were surprised that the space was both hip AND family friendly. We ordered the Party Time Chef's tasting menu. It was perhaps the most amazing selection of food we've eaten in Philadelphia. They served a liver pate that was one of the most delicious foods I've ever eaten: surprising sweet and savory combination with a fabulous texture. My mouth felt like it had won the lottery. Is this what it is like to be royalty? The service was top notch. Wait staff were genuinely friendly, knowledgeable about the wines and foods, and attentive without being intrusive. Yes, this must be what it is like to be royalty."

  • "Very knowledgeable waitress and excellent food. I recommend the tasting menu. Everything was perfectly prepared. We sat down immediately and the entire wait staff was servicing our table, which was never without anything because they were available for our every need."

  • "Zahav is a hidden gem behind the trees! From the moment my husband and I walked in the staff was friendly, accomodating, and very helpful when it came to ordering. One of the managers came out to check on our experience and introduce himself. The food was outstanding...flavorful and plentiful! We will definitely be headed back again soon."

  • "Have been to Zahav several times in the past, but this time we did the grilled lamb tasting menu. Basically, once you've identified what you don't/won't/can't eat, the chef chooses the meal for you. With one exception, everything was outstanding and the choices meshed perfectly."

  • "Once again, I celebrated my birthday here!!! I could just live off the hummus!!! We had the Chef's tasting menu and it was extraordinary. I constantly recommend this restaurant to my friends. I wish I still lived in Philly, as I would eat there all the time. Now, we go whenever we get the chance (from Central PA). Zahav rocks! Chef Mike rocks and everyone who works there is wonderful!"

  • "We loved Zahav! I found it by researching best restaurants in Philadelphia. Our server was very attentive & knowledgeable. Impressed with the Israeli wine list! Germaine Robin brandy is one of my personal favorites & I was happy to have a glass! My husband has a sesame allergy & he normally can't eat hummus but the restaurant had a Turkish hummus made with butter instead of tahini! Our children enjoyed most of the dishes. We ordered the duck hearts & our 9 year old son tried them for the first time & liked them very much. Overall, the flavors we're outstanding. We don't live in Philadelphia but we hope to return to dine at Zahav again in the future. We will definitely refer friends & family. Thanks for a wonderful evening!"

  • "Wonderful contemporary Middle Eastern/Israeli cuisine served in small plate style. Try the tasting menu for a sampling of fare. The hummus is the best anywhere. Extraordinary smooth consistency and delicate taste. The variety of salads, sides, and main dishes is great. The fried cheese with dates was a runaway favorite with our group because of the crisp outer texture, the soft but tasty cheese (almost like a goat cheese in flavor), and the accompanying date sauce which was a great combination of flavors. Don't let small plate serving style fool you. The quantity of great quality food was plentiful for our group of four. Fare is a great balance of vegetable and meat ingredients (limited fish). A great for vegan/omnivore groups."

  • "We went with a gift certificate we were given, from our children, with our children. It was interestingly prepared foods done with natural and simple ingredients. The prices are higher than we usually pay for good food."

  • "Never expected such delicious food. It is tapas style so lots to enjoy. You must try the 6 or 8 toppings to go with homemade pita bread. My favorite was the beets ..hard to believe, because I don't like beets. Another must have is the warm hummus with pine nuts and cheese, it was so smooth and yummy. We sat at the bar and the bartender guides us on what to try and it was a perfect evening."

  • "We came to Philadelphia to celebrate my husband's birthday. My husband is an Israeli-American and we were eager to dine at highly-rated Zahav. We opted for the special tasting menu and so glad we did. The creative approach to meld food from the diaspora with Mediterranean and Middle East cuisine was exceptional. The hummus with foul was sublime as was the varied salads. The warm dates stuffed with feta and served on tchina were scrumptious. The main dish of a 1/2 shoulder of lamb cooked with pomegranetes, chick peas. and mint was so tender the diner was instructed to pull off the meat with small tongs. The portion was huge and the lamb delicious. Special thanks to the responsive waitstaff and "toda roba" to chef Michael Solmonov!"

  • "Had heard plenty about Zahav over the years, but this was our first visit. It was our wedding anniversary. I had received a generous gift card from my son, and felt this was a worthwhile occasion. I really can't say I've ever had better service, and we loved the decor and location. The food was really a revelation though. I like middle eastern food, in general, but the cuisine here was really special. It was unique, delicious, just the right size portions, and possibly even healthy. Well, maybe not so healthy, the dessert, but honestly, it was, as they say, "to die for." The place is pricey, but compared to some other dinning experiences I've had, worth it. Well, the gift card helped.."

  • "Our dining experience was outstanding, amazing, exceptional, and then some! Knowing nothing about Israeli cuisine, we asked our server (Gabriel—fun, knowledgeable, an absolute delight!) for the Chef's Menu, which was superb. We will most decidedly return and ask for Gabriel...and maybe be brave enough to order off the menu!"

  • "Having heard the buzz for quite some time, I was ready to be underwhelmed. My party shared the tasting menu and nearly everything was exceptional. The flavors on each plate were interesting but still held firm to classical Middle Eastern dishes. Though we had little room for dessert, the halva mousse was incredible."
